I called apple's tech support and to no avail nothing could be done to rectify the situation short of reseting it to factory settings. I reset the phone to factory setting by way of the phone and not itunes and when I synched with itunes it notified me that the phone would be reset but updated to the most recent software upgrade which is the 3.1.
