redsn0w 09.5b5-3 iOS 4.0 Jailbreak for iPhone 3G/iPod Touch 2G Released

Earlier we reported about the iPhone Dev Team releasing an update to their iPhone unlock, ultrasn0w via Cydia. This latest update will unlock all iPhone basebands. Great news for people looking to travel with their iPhones right (the iPhone 4 will be sold unlocked from Apple Store in Canada!)?

redsn0w beta Updated to “hacktivate” and Jailbreak the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G

The Dev Team updated their blog post to include the latest update for redsn0w, a hacktivate/jailbreak tool. This time around, it’s only for the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G.

What does it mean to “hacktivate” your iPhone? It means being able to activate your iPhone with an unofficial sim card, bypassing iTunes. Normally, you will need to plug in your iPhone into iTunes to activate it. redsn0w will let you bypass this step.

So in other words, you could activate an AT&T iPhone to use with another SIM card from a Canadian carrier. But, of course you’d need to unlock your iPhone afterwards.

Here’s what the Dev Team had to say:

redsn0w beta has been updated to hacktivate iOS 4.0 for iPhone3G (in addition to jailbreaking the iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G).   The download links for redsn0w 0.9.5b5-3 are (seems their servers are being slammed):

For now, the redsn0w beta release supports only the iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G at today’s 4.0. It’s still a beta, so you’ll need to let Cydia reorganize, reload, and update after using redsn0w.

As always, proceed at your own risk and with caution. If you’re not sure about how to proceed, stay away from jailbreaking. Do your research before getting started.
