Ultrasn0w Updated To 1.1-1, Improves Battery Life

iPhone owners who recently unlocked their iPhone with the latest version of Ultrasn0w may have been experiencing a sudden decrease in battery life.

The battery levels have been so severe in some cases that some users have reported battery levels dropping an average of 5% every hour.

By jailbreaking your iPhone, Ultrasn0w 1.0-1 is the tool that unlocks the device, whether it be iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, or iPhone 3G and allows users to use their iPhone with any wireless carrier.

At this time, Ultrasn0w can unlock:

  • iPhone 4 running iOS 4.0 or 4.0.1
  • iPhone 3G, 3GS with base band 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01 or 05.13.04

To solve some of the Ultrasn0w related battery problems, Planetbeing, a member of the iPhone Dev Team, began to investigate the claims in order to come up with a solution.

The solution has been an updated version of Ultrasn0w to version 1.1-1.

Ultrasn0w 1.1-1 can be installed from Cydia by iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 users to unlock their iPhone on iOS 3.0 or earlier (up to iOS 4.0.1).

Here are the steps to install Ultrasn0w on your jailbroken iPhone:

1.) Launch Cydia

2.) Add the repo to Cydia.

3.) Search for ‘ultrasn0w’ in Cydia and install ultrasn0w. This should successfully unlock your iPhone.

If you’ve already installed Ultrasn0w, then launch Cydia and tap on changes to install the updated version.

Oh. I wonder how they did it. Maybe they fixed an incorrect algorithm that displayed more battery than the phone actually had. Oh wait, that’s Apple’s fix.

  • Kairu

    Have to admit, I laughed.

  • iPhone4crazy

It might actually be true because my third party apps are reading a lower battery level than the phone. I used free memory (great app). Free memory reads 88% and the phone shows 92%. lol

  • lello91

    Hahaha good one

  • G-little

Lmfaoo, I already lose more than 5% every hour with telus’ only 3G cellular network.

  • MT

Maybe the Dev Team can put together a fix for 3G issues, since Apple is leaving us hanging.

  • Fred17

You do realize the network has nothing to do with the abysmal battery life, right?

  • James

anyone else not seeing version 1.1-1 in Cydia? I only see version 0.93 listed. I have a 3G running iOS 4.0 with baseband 05.13.04.

  • MR

I was surprised that my iPhone 4 was losing battery as fast as it was… perhaps this was the reason. Overnight it dropped about 30%.

  • Jay23

Well, yes it does. 3G uses more battery life than Edge. So if you’re on a network that only has 3G (such as Bell and Telus), then the battery drains a lot faster than if you’re with Rogers, for example, where you can turn 3G off to save battery life . . .

  • Fred17

Yes I realize this now, but I was more thinking about Telus 3G vs any other 3G carrier. There are still ways to reduce battery draining by turning the wifi off and disabling push for example.

  • iwantnoww

i know this isn’t related to the topic but how come on telus page the iphone 4 pricing is the same as no-contract as to a 3 year contract? for example, iphone 4 32 gb, both 3 year contract and no-contract pricing is set as 749$ :S
