Review: Air Vent and Dash Mounts by ARKON

Hey all!

Today we have two product reviews. First we will look at a Car Air Vent Mount for the iPhone and iPhone 3G and second, we will look at a Car Dash Mount for the iPhone and iPhone 3G.

Air Vent Mount by ARKON (Model# IPM29-ST)

The Air Vent Mount by ARKON is a removable swivel air vent mount that is designed for the shape of both the iPhone and iPhone 3G. Because this mount attaches to the air vents in your car, it can be moved from vehicle to vehicle without any damage to the interior. All the mount needs is an air vent with horizontal louvers (which the majority of vehicles have), and that makes this product a very good and compact travel companion.

Air Vent Mount

As I mentioned, the product does have a swivel on it so that makes for great viewing angles for the passengers in your vehicle for both short and long road trips. However, it is the design that really wins here because the holder itself fits both the iPhone and iPhone 3G and it is a very snug fit mostly thanks to the top clip that has a rubber covering on it.

For a versatile, portable solution to mounting your iPhone or iPhone 3G in a vehicle, this is the best option simply because it is removable and can be used in multiple cars.

Multi Angle Dash Mount by ARKON (Model# IPM28)

The Multi Angle Dash Mount is very similar to the Air Vent Mount in that it is also a car mount but this one is designed to be used on the dashboard of the vehicle (as opposed to an air vent). The Dash Mount still has a swivel and can be rotated into different angles, and it is designed for the shape of both the iPhone and iPhone 3G. Because this mount attaches to your dashboard however, it is not exactly removable. It has an adhesive strip that holds the mount in place on the dash and really, once it is on, it cannot be moved from vehicle to vehicle as the Air Vent Mount can. So with that in mind, the Dash Mount is not very travel friendly.

Dash Mount

However, as I mentioned previously, the product does have a swivel on it so that makes for great viewing angles for the passengers in your vehicle and it is still a solid car mount because the holder itself still fits both the iPhone and iPhone 3G in a way so both devices have a tight fit.

Both the Air Vent Mount and Dash mount can be picked up directly from ARKON online for $19.95 each.

I bought basically the same thing off eBay for a few bucks some months ago but it’s kinds useless for me cause it’s a PITA if you like to leave It in a silicone skin since it won’t fit with it on. The skin keeps it from sliding out of my hands and keeps the phone from scratching when you set of down even on it’s face so these clip mounts don’t do me much good.

I’m considering making a custom skin for it though and see if I like that as a compromise.

consider the bracketron, it can be adjusted to fit any size to fit any case you are using.

Will be great when Tomtom or other release a turn by turn software for 3.0.

Also, I saw a few months ago a proof of concept where the cam from the iphone was filming the road and the gps superpose the road onto it !

  • Arkon introduced its new family of “Slim-Grip” Mounts this week for the iPhone 4. Central to the design of the new holder was that it was universal so it would work with the iPhone 4, 3GS, 3G, iPhone Original, and even the iPod Touch. The other aspect of the design that's interesting is that the holder has a sleek and elegant design, similar to a custom fit holder.
