ZAGG ZAGGsparq 2.0: iPhone/USB Battery Backup Charger Review

By now you’ve probably heard of ZAGG, the company behind the popular invisibleSHIELD protective skins. I’ve used the invisibleSHIELD for my iPhone, iPhone 3G, and my current iPhone 3GS (and my MacBook and iPad!). I have my iPhone 4 invisibleSHIELDS on the way.

ZAGG also makes other accessories too, and one of the most highly anticipated is their recent release of the ZAGGsparq 2.0 battery backup charger.

The original ZAGGsparq had some units plagued by issues and the team at ZAGG fixed these issues in their second revision, the ZAGGsparq 2.0. I’ve been using this iPhone backup battery for the past little while so here’s my experience with the unit.

ZAGGsparq 2.0 Battery Backup Charger Review

The ZAGGsparq 2.0 features are as follows:

  • 6,000 mAh Lithium Polymer
  • Has the power to charge an iPhone four times
  • 4 yellow lights indicate power level, 25%-50%-75%-100%
  • Has the ability to charge multiple USB devices simultaneously
  • Fixed output: 2x 1000mA @ 5V
  • Power Source: AC 100-240 v/50/60 Hz
  • Physical Size 3.5 x 3.5 x 1 inches
  • Weight .54 lbs. (245 grams)

What’s inside the box:

  • ZAGGsparq 2.0 charger
  • EU plug adapter
  • Instruction card

Upon unboxing the ZAGGsparq 2.0, I noticed that the packaging is quite minimal. You’ll see the box is about the same size as the ZAGGsparq 2.0 unit itself, and inside there’s no extra “stuffing” that you sometimes find from other companies. Good job.

I picked up the ZAGGsparq 2.0 and it did have some solid weight to it, but it wasn’t overly heavy. At 245 grams, that’s comparable to a big bag of Lay’s potato chips (I know, what a comparison eh?). On the side you’ll see four amber LED lights that indicate the amount of battery remaining (just push the button and they’ll light up), and two USB ports. These USB ports will allow you to charge any device that’s powered via USB. This unit works perfectly with the iPad and will charge it from zero to about 60%.

As you can see below, the ZAGGsparq 2.0 is just slightly bigger than an Apple Airport Express. The design of the unit looks like a page from Apple. It’s simple, clean, and very shiny. I did notice the unit picks up dust quite easily due to the plastic finish.

The ZAGGsparq Packs One Heckuva Punch

The ZAGGsparq 2.0 will enable you to charge two USB devices at the same time. With its massive 6000 mAh lithium polymer battery, it will charge your iPhone up to four full times! If you’re traveling, the ZAGGsparq 2.0 will be a godsend. Never again will you feel the stress of running out of battery. We’ve all been there. The ZAGGsparq 2.0 changes this.

As I’m writing this review, I’m on a BC Ferry tethering my iPhone data plan. We know tethering eats up your battery like no tomorrow–but with my iPhone plugged into the ZAGGsparq 2.0 I can tether for hours and not worry about a thing!

I was able to charge my iPhone 3GS, and even my RichardSolo 1800 battery backup–say what? That’s right! If you don’t want to carry your ZAGGsparq 2.0, you can use it to charge another battery! With dual USB charging ports, the possibilities are really endless. Handheld games, digital cameras, Blackberrys and other cellphones will also be able to get topped up.

I don't suppose them being a sponsor encouraged this?

  • rorypiper

GAH! Need this. Now that they are back in stock, I can't afford one.

  • Half_Pint

Nice. Can it charge via USB too? A lot of car stereos have USB hookups now, so that would eliminate the need for an AC/DC inverter on longer trips.

  • iVictoria

Gary, did I hear the word GIVEAWAY! Come-on, Rory Piper cannot afford to buy one even though he needs the ZAGGsparq 2.0 (see his post below). With your connections, can't you at least give one away to the masses?

  • Networx

@half pint, No, it won't charge via USB. You have to plug it into a wall outlet to charge the Zaggsparq 2.0. I've had mine for about a month now and I love it. It's great having that backup power when I'm travelling. I would argue that Zagg's estimate that it can charge an iPhone from dead to full charge four times on a single charge is a bit extreme. I think I got two full charges out of it before I had to charge the Zaggsparq. I have yet to test it with my iPad because the thing never runs out of juice!! The only other downside is that it takes a long time (6-9 hours) to fully charge the Zaggsparq so make sure you do that overnight. Finally, Gary forgot to mention that the top USB port on the Zaggsparq is optimized for the iPhone 3Gs, iPhone 4 and iPad's unique pinout so you'll get a faster charge from the top port. The bottom one is good for any USB device but I've never used it. Guess I should run a comparison on charging times between the optimized USB port and the standard one……

Highly recommended for any iPhone or iPad road warrior!!

I love mine. I had the original that stopped working and got the 2.0 replacement a while ago. Since I'm always using my iphone I find I can't get through the day sometimes without charging so having this with me all the time is awesome.

  • Sv650

I find my Mophie Juice Pak very convenient, as the iPhone slides into it, and they become one. It more than doubles the battery life. Between it, the handsfree car cradle, and the recharging cord, it would be an extremely rare instance when a larger battery is needed. You could also use the battery of you laptop as another power resource.

Tethering while on BC Ferries? Isn't there an electrical outlet at each workstation (and elsewhere)? I also thought that while tethered, the iPhone charges from the computer to which it is connected.

I think some people are confused about iPhoneinCanada's relationship with Zagg. While I don't want to speak for Gary, I'm pretty sure they remain a major sponsor because Gary loves their products so much – not the other way around.

Honestly, I love their products too – plus they're a decent company with good customer service, If this were my site, I'd be plastering their ad all over the place, and telling people when I used an awesome product of theirs.

I just wish people would see that obviously Gary is a Zagg Fanboy ;) and that's why there are Ads, not the other way around. (Proof of this: Zagg doesn't pay for the Ads on this site, it's an affiliate link).

Sv650 – I'm in agreement with you about the Mophie Juicepack (or for that matter any case/charger combo, though Mophie has been my fav so far), entirely easier to charge and still use.

    Nice find!

  • Sv650

But…….. aren't there other awesome products and companies out there also deserving of review? As “Canada's #1 iPhone Blog” this could be a place to highlight the best.

  • http://www.iphoneappgirl.com ChantelleJoy

LOLWUT? Because we ONLY review Zagg products????

I take personal offense to your ignorance, as I've written many reviews and news articles for this site and not one of them are about Zagg.

Unless I'm misunderstanding you and your point is that we should write less often about the companies/products we prefer? (By that logic we should really cut back on talking about the iPhone so much!)

The Gum Plus is better than this. It’s both CHEAPER and SMALLER than the Sparq. And it actually charges my iPhone 4, 4 times on a single charge as advertised (with the sparq, I only get 2 charges).

“Better” is according to your needs. This plugs right into the wall, which is a huge plus when travelling. With the Gum Plus you’d either have to carry another USB cable and wall charger or plug it in through your computer which is a lot clumsier. There are times when all I want is a wall charger for my iPhone and the Zagg Sparq would work as that, then have extra battery charges for when I can’t find a charger. Sounds much more ideal for my needs.
