Facebook Launches Poke iPhone App: Send Self Destructing Messages to Friends

Five days ago AllThingsD reported Facebook was set to launch a competitor to Snapchat, an app that allows users to send self destructing messages to friends. That has now come to life as Facebook has just announced the release of Poke, a new messaging app for the iPhone:

With the Poke app, you can poke or send a message, photo, or video to Facebook friends to share what you’re up to in a lightweight way. You can poke an individual friend or several at once. Each message expires after a specific time you’ve set, either 1, 3, 5 or 10 seconds. When time runs out, the message disappears from the app.

Looks like the Facebook ‘Poke’ is reaching another level. So now you can send little expiring messages to friends, to literally poke your friends with whatever explicit message you want to send.

Here’s the iTunes description:

Poke your friends to share fun moments or just say hello.

• Poke a friend with a message, photo or video
• Choose how long they can see it
• Press and hold to see pokes from friends
• Say where you are when you poke
• See when your friends take screenshots

Poke has iOS 6 Facebook integration for signing in. Also, if friends try to take a screenshot of your Poke messages, you’ll see a ‘flash’ icon next to their name. So, be careful if you want to take screenshots and be a creeper.
