‘Runeblade’ Brings Fantasy Adventure Gaming to Your Apple Watch

The Apple Watch is finally just a few more weeks away (well, for those of us who were beyond-fast with our preorders), and with the looming release comes a tidal wave of apps and experiences redesigned for your wrist. We’ve already detailed plenty of the first Apple Watch apps to hit the App Store, but the store’s biggest draw, video games, have been decidedly absent from release thus far.

Runeblade is the first Apple Watch game that I’ve really seen detailed (aside from a few simpler titles and a Trivia Crack client), and while gaming on my wrist is something I never thought I’d be interested in, I really can’t wait to try it out.

Runeblade

The game is self described as “a unique game experience tailored for Apple Watch. Designed for glance-based gameplay it delivers “twitter-sized entertainment”. The Verge, who took a first-look at the game earlier today, notes that Runeblade “is a fairly typical RPG that has you venturing into a fantasy realm to ward off an impending evil. You level up your character, collect new magic spells and gear, and fight enemy creatures like dragons and unholy deer.”

I think that the most notable thing about Runeblade, which is being developed by a new smartwatch-focussed studio (featuring talent from Angry Birds creator Rovio and Alan Wake developer Remedy Entertainment) called Everywear Games, is not that it’s an RPG on your wrist, but that the game is truly designed from the ground up as a smartwatch experience.

Encounters in the title happen over time, and an enemy will not always be immediately defeated, “requiring you to revisit the battle happening on your wrist for a few minutes at a time over the course of your day,” according to The Daily Dot‘s Mike Wehner.

I’ve been wearing a Pebble for over a year now, and I’ve never even felt an inkling of curiosity around gaming on the device. Something like Runeblade, however, which I can play for just a second, when I have just a second, is more than intriguing.

You can take a look at the trailer for Runeblade below, and let us know if you’ll be doing any gaming on your Apple Watch!
