The $1.99 app used by director Malik Bendjelloul was 8mm Vintage Camera, to help him finish the film as he ran out of money. He says the quality of the 8mm vintage effect looked just as good, after he filmed scenes from his iPhone. Seriously, there’s an app for just about everything.

Let us know if you’ve checked out the documentary, we’ve added it to our watch list.

Update: “Searching for Sugar Man” won the Oscar tonight (via @luisquebec). Well done.
