If you rely on public transit, you might be disappointed Apple Maps no longer provides this information. Apple refers you to third-party alternatives for transit directions now. You could also use the Google Maps web app to get free directions as well.

The developer of CycleMap has released today, TransitMap. This app provides public transit directions to over 400 cities in 40 countries. Here are the features:

TransitMap features :

– Directions from public transit services.
– Support for more than 400 cities in more than 40 countries.
– Search feature to find easily the place you are looking for.
– Transit between transportation services (Bus, train, subway, …).
– Transit between cities (Where available).
– Directions displayed in text format and on the map.
– Integration in the iOS Maps application.

In speaking with the Canadian developer Olivier, he notes the app uses Google’s Transit API. Here are the Canadian cities supported:

  • Ben

    the codes were already used!

  • Damn. People are fast!

  • Ben

yes, will you receive more codes?

  • We will ask.

  • Bagobones

    Don’t bother with this one…
    – ONLY returns one possible route
    – ONLY has a map view so you can’t preview a list of stops it is suggesting.

    Edit:
Those two screen shots are the WHOLE app.
    – No way to select a start time
    – No way to select an arrival time
    – no way to filter modes of transport.

Use HopStop instead a more complete and FREE app.

And yes I feel burnt for spending a buck on this since I already had a FREE app that works better even if that app is ad supported.

  • Thanks for the recommendation. HopStop looks pretty badass!

  • Bagobones

Ya other than some clunky style choices for the route numbers, HopStop is a rather complete Transit app. It has been recommended on some other blog/sites as well.

  • Public transportation info works better with Transit app in Vancouver.
