Judge Lucy Koh Urges Apple and Samsung to Make ‘Peace’

After more than three hours of heavy arguments on the scope and consequences of the $1 billion ruling that found Samsung guilty of willful patent infringement, Judge Lucy Koh asked both parties to put down their weapons, Financial Times reports.

Judge Lucy Koh’s question: “When is this case going to resolve?” prompted laughter from the public. But she continued: “I’m not joking . . . I’ve said this all along. I think it’s time for global peace . . . if there is any way this court can facilitate some sort of resolution, I’d like to do that. I think it would be good for consumers and good for the industry.”

Obviously, the opinions differ on what Apple and Samsung should do. If you listen to Samsung, its legal counsel says the South Korean company was willing to talk, despite contrary comments. However, we can say the same for Apple, as the Cupertino company was ready to cross-license its patents.

As a reply to Charles Verhoeven of Quinn Emanual’s (Samsung’s legal counsel) claim, Apple’s legal representative called the $1 billion judgement a “slap on the wrist” and expressed the need for the court to establish a line that would change behaviours.
So, when will this litigation end? Well, it may take a while . . .
