Apple Releases Mac OS X 10.6.5, AirPrint Not Found?

As correctly rumored yesterday, Apple today released Mac OS X 10.6.5, the fifth maintenance update for Snow Leopard. The update is available via Software Update on a Mac and offers many fixes since the last release of OS X 10.6.4 in June 2010.

As noted by the software update, 10.6.5 includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility, and security, including fixes that:

- improve reliability with Microsoft Exchange servers
- address performance of some image-processing operations in iPhoto and Aperture
- address stability and performance of graphics applications and games
- resolve a delay between print jobs
- address a printing issue for some HP printers connected to an AirPort Extreme
- resolve an issue when dragging contacts from Address Book to iCal
- address an issue where dragging an item from a stack causes the Dock to not automatically hide
- resolve an issue with Wikipedia information not displaying correctly in Dictionary
- improve performance of MainStage on certain Mac systems
- resolve spacing issues with OpenType fonts
- improve reliability with some Bluetooth braille displays
- resolve a VoiceOver issue when browsing some web sites with Safari 5

As noted previously, users looking to use AirPrint functionality with their iPhone or iPad will need to have 10.6.5 installed. However, oddly enough, there is no mention of AirPrint in the above change log.

Moreover, it seems that Apple has removed AirPrint from OS X 10.6.5, as the functionality is not present in the current release but was available in previous 10.6.5 beta builds. There are also user reports indicating that AirPrint to shared printers on PC/Mac from the GM seed of iOS 4.2 is not working.

Based on this, it is unknown if Apple will release an AirPrint specific update soon for OS X 10.6.5 such as before this Friday, which is the rumored release date for iOS 4.2. It is also possible that the full iOS 4.2 release, as opposed to the GM seed, may enable AirPrint shared printing on OS X 10.6.5. In either case, we’ll see by Friday.

Based on previous rumors, today should also see the release of iTunes 10.1 with iOS 4.2 available for iDevices this Friday.

I’d rather Apple hold back and release a working feature and not something that works sometimes.

So while AirPrint is nice… I’d rather it work properly

Can’t wait to update this once I get home from work!

Sometimes Apple can be overbearing in terms of auto spell-check. We as Canadians need extra diligence in watching what gets corrected. But let’s keep it real..it is ‘iPhone in Canada’ blog, right? Then rumour, not…rumor. Please?!? Might be small but let’s keep our identity, even in a blog.

I am a little hesitant downloading this because I know there was problems with this stuff in the past (iTunes crash or bad reliability etc.) is there any problems with 10.6.5? Maybe I’m just paranoid, but I have got a bandwidth limit
PS: I have some other good APPS from Aneesoft want to recommend. Maybe someone will like it.

Airprint for both OS X and windows depends on a new version of iTunes which will be released soon. This is why devs with the earlier beta of iTunes 10.1 could still print with Snow Leopard 10.6.5 while those with a newer beta could not. Apple should have it fixed in the final release of 10.1 which should come out on Friday.

If air print comes to iOS, this will only mean even less time spent on my computer since I got my first iPhone the iP4

    Off-topic:

Looks like redboard.rogers.com website is down.

    Does anyone know why?

Anyone else have problems with updating to 10.6.5? I downloaded the offline update from apple’s website and installed it and rebooted. My about tab still shows 10.6.4, I’ve even tried it now through software updates and get the same thing.

I don’t know if it’s because I have FileVault on?

Guess what? Life just called and said you’re delusional.

Taking the time to comment over the spelling of a word? The only reason you’d do this is because you live a sad, boring life. If you want to really show your Canadian pride, go enlist in the military.

I bet you even nag your local supermarket or gas station about their Canadian spellings too, right?

    Huh?

Works for me. The Rogers Social Media team has it tough. Getting lambasted by the entire country and not being able to respond/defend yourself while towing the company line would make me suicidal.
