Fido to Stop Selling the iPhone 3G in 2009?

Currently the only way to get an iPhone 3G in Canada legitimately is through Rogers, and their newly minted discount carrier, Fido. However, that could soon change as the word on the internetz is that Fido will stop selling the iPhone 3G starting in 2009.

According to Kidrock23 from HowardForums, the rumor is that with Fido’s latest re-branding as a low-cost cellular provider (which is essentially to compete with the likes of Koodo and Solo) will cease sales of the iPhone in 2009, or will not carry any future models of the iPhone.

Since Fido is now seen as a low cost carrier, and apparently the coveted iPhone doesn’t fit into their marketing plan as a no frills provider. When I first heard of this from one of my sources about Fido eliminating the iPhone in 2009 I wasn’t sure what to think. However, now that I’ve seen another person leak this story on HowardForums I feel it has more weight to actually come true.

With Fido’s re-branding to a low-cost carrier it is truly a sad thing to see. I started my first monthly plan with Fido when they were owned by Microcell and I loved the company and its competitive pricing. They’ve tried to keep Fido the “same” ever since but as we’ve all seen they have been closer to a Rogers clone than anything.

If you’re a current Fido user and say a new generation iPhone is released, I wonder how people will do a hardware upgrade when…there isn’t a new model available! What are your thoughts on this goodbye-Apple-iPhone-on-Fido scenario coming true?

That’s really unfortunate if it’s true… If you hop ship and sign a new contract with Rogers, does Fido still charge you the early cancellation fees, despite your money still going to the same place? :P

I’ve been with fido since the microcell days, and bought the iphone because it was the only decent phone they came out. It only cost $150 after fido dollars. However, with this news I will likely switch carrriers next contract. Too bad, since fido’s per second billing and fido dollars do make a big difference. Hopefully there will be some good new GSM/4G entrants anyway.

Regarding the iphone. I’m getting very tired of all the missed/dropped calls, crashing apps, and short battery life. I had heard that fido might be getting a few blackberry models and was hoping to switch if the bold or storm ever came to fido. If these rumours are correct, I assume this also indicates that blackberries are also unlikely to make the transition to fido. Time to switch.

Unfortunate if true. I’ve been with fido since the microcell days and found it a good deal with city fido, per second billing and fido dollars. However, the iphone was the only decent phone for quite some time so I picked it up earlier this year ($150 after fido dollars). If fido no longer releases any full featured smartphones, I will likely switch carriers next renewal; there should be some new GSM/4G carriers by then anyway.

Regarding the iphone, I’m getting pretty tired of it anyway. The missed/dropped calls, crashing apps and short battery life are starting to drive me crazy. I was hoping the future blackberry rumours on fido were true, and I could snag a bold or storm. However this seems unlikely if this newest rumour is true.

Once Telus/Bell convert their network to 3G/4G then the playing field will be even and they’ll be nothing preventing me from picking the carrier that has the best equipment and plan for me.

I’ve been with Fido since the Microcell days too. Love the pricing and points. This upsets me greatly! I guess I will simply have to get the new iPhone through other means. e.g. non-contract unlock ones… Unless the new cellphone companies are better??? I wouldn’t go with Rogers for sure.

Yeah I’ve been with them since they started up as well. Dang. I have a kick ass plan as a result and hopefully they think of a way to give us iphone upgrades!

This would suck large. I, along with everyone in the company I work for has the City Fido unlimited voice and data package for $100.00 a month. If this is true we are going to have to go to Rogers (or someone else with 3g/4g network) and pay a stupid amount of money for what we get now.

Wouldn’t surprise me… but it would sure suck for Fido users!

That’s somewhat depressing. I signed up for Fido just before they did the “overhaul”, and I am worried about what will happen to my contract. I think the grandfather clause is in effect, but maybe I should just sell my first gen, and get a 3G before it’s too late…I wonder if I ask nicely, they will wave my SAF like they claim on their new commercial.

lies!!!!!!! Fido wouldn’t stop selling the iphone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Anyways, denial aside, I can still cling onto the fact that this is coming from a report from a friend of someone who works at a Fido store. I wouldn’t call it that reliable.

Well, fine with me! Fido stops carrying iPhone meaning that only Rogers will carry it. Since a lot of people are unsatisfied with Rogers, these people will not get the iPhone and … well, what i’m trying to say is that it will become exclusive again! Maybe i’m selfish but I really don’t like seeing the iPhone like everywhere .. at the market, in the cinema, on the bus, etc. I think it’s a good move imo that Fido stops carrying the iPhone because it makes sense that re-branded Fido appeals to more everyday people who are just looking for a somewhat ordinary phone that gets the job done complimented by a low-cost monthly plan.

I’m with on with Bell for another 6months, and had been waiting till my contract ended so I could get an iPhone. That sucks that Fido will be stopping with them because I had planned to go with Fido due to the Fido>Rogers rumours. I’m not about to pay Bell’s ridiculous contract cancellation fees to get one now.

if you “hop ship” and sign a new contract with Rogers and you are not yet eligible for a HUP, Fido will waive your ECF IFF (if and only if!) a) you have been a customer for at least 1 year, and b) you are in good credit standing with them, i.e. no outstanding debt or history of unpaid bills, etc.

at least this was rogers’ policy when i jumped to fido to grab the iphone when i was only 6 mos into my 3-yr contract with rogers. (in fact this was the loophole to get an iphone right away instead waiting to be hup-eligible! silly, really…)

  • someone who still cares about

as someone who is very close to fido I can confirm they will most likley stop selling the iphone. my suggestion is email, email , email let apple know what you think about this they already have issues with rogers to begin with.

I can also tell you that communication between the retail locations and head office has stoped, no employee including managers have any Idea what’s going on. when rogers decides to do something they now do it and employees arrive for there next shift to something new and in most case bull shit money grabs which screw the customer. From what I’ve scene up to this point it would not surprise me if Rogers is plotting to get rid of fido or move the brand into their stores.

I just signed up a 3 year contract for my iphone with fido, and they had better service me well for those 3 years as I have been a return customer in the past.
They will only loose out if they turn their backs on iphone clients. I think Ted Rogers wouldn’t like this move as he wanted to provide a product that the customers wanted.
Fido is Rogers even though they act independently from each other.
    Dumb move.

I too have been a customer since the Microcell days! I have the original City Fido Unlimited local calling plan for $45/month which included the system access fee!…at least I thought I was still getting this rate until I checked my bill and it showed I had cancelled this and agreed to a $50 plan which does not include the system access fee.

I’m really upset that this change was done without me knowing. As far as I was informed numerous times by CSR at fido there was a grandfather clause on my agreement. If this meant renewing as I have already done and if my contract in fact was completed, they should have told me it was up for renewal and in order to keep this same agreement I would be required to renew.

I have yet to express my bitter disappointment but they shall feel the wrath of one very unhappy customer.

Has this been confirmed yet? I can’t find any news on this outside of this website. I’m planning on getting an iPhone in the near future and am currently still favouring Fido as a provider. So, I’d be really interested in the newest ‘scoop’ here.

It is true. I asked about the iPhone today and they informed me that “a lot of their customer’s don’t like the added costs of the iPhone.” Guess that the new company position. I joined with them back in the Microcell days too. Slowly seen them go downhill. They were the alternative brand, that gave you what you needed. Understandably in competitive markets, you need to restructure, but sad to seem them go this way.

I dont believe it, i tried to buy an iphone today, i started casually chatting with the sales rep and then i asked for a 16gb iphone and he said “heres an inside tip, theyre telling us about a new iphone well be selling in june/july, itll have 32gb storage, a better camera and a faster processor, if you get one now you will have wasted your money” thank god for that sales rep guy.

I had the same thing happen to me, only I actually talked to a rep and renewed my plan on the phone, only to get the cancelled package on my next bill… I called up extremely irate and got my old plan back, without the SAF, and $45/mth/unlimited. All is fine now…

I have a feeling this is not true. On the same day that the iPhone 4G was officially reveled Fido had an image (and still does) of an iPhone 4G that says “This changes everything.” Sounds like they will definitely stay involved with the iPhone.
