Apple Drops iPhone 3G from Retail Stores, Rogers PWNED!

Yikes. Breaking news suggests that Apple is not very happy with Rogers. So unhappy that Apple has decided to forego the sales of iPhone 3G units in Canadian Apple retail outlets altogether! That’s right…you won’t be able to buy iPhone 3G from the newly minted Apple Store Vancouver, or any other location. Your choices will be either Rogers, Fido, Rogers, Fido, Rogers…and did I mention Fido?

What is the ultimate quote from Apple? How’s this line for absolute pwnage: “We have nothing to do with the service plans. Those are Rogers’ plans.”

Ouch. This report builds on the earlier rumor that Apple is diverting massive iPhone 3G stocks from Canada to Europe. Oh boy, the joys of being Canadian. Hey, at least Rogers customers have one thing to look forward to this summer. We won’t be charged a fee for incoming text messages, unlike competitors Bell and Telus (which will start Aug.8 @ $0.15/message).

Jeez, if we’re not robbed by Rogers, we’re shanked by Bell and Telus. Gotta love oligopolies! =)

As far as I know, the iPhone 3G was never going to be sold from Apple retail stores in Canada.

Since June 9, 2008, the only locations listed on the “Where to Buy” page have been Roger’s and Fido outlets.

TUAW reported this story as well, and have ammended their report to indicate that the iPhone 3G will not be sold in Apple retail locations in any country except the U.S.

  • Yes that is true, but since that early report there has been some debate as to whether or not we will see iPhone 3G from Apple stores. This story just confirms that earlier report. All we can do is wait until launch day to find out more answers to our questions.

the iPhone is a good product that will sell itself. apple retail stores already have enough on their plates, they don’t need to try to sell the iPhone. people know about it already and will be flocking to the stores in their respective countries. and if apple doesn’t support rogers, then let them deal with the dirty work, especially since they aren’t cool with rogers trying to stop apple’s goal for making the iPhone more affordable and accessible. apple will be making the sales anyway, just less effort on their part.

Well, the earlier report from Tod Maffin, who received his information directly from Apple’s official PR rep seemed pretty conclusive back on June 27th. I certainly had no doubt about it even back then.

Today’s “headlines” implying that it’ being dropped from Apple Stores in Canada because of Rogers is really just sensationalism and rumour-mongering. As far as I can tell they never planned to have the iPhone 3G sold in Apple Stores in Canada, or possibly even in any other country outside of the U.S., so suggesting that it’s being “dropped” is misleading.

The rumours of Apple’s “unhappiness” with Rogers are just that — rumours. Rumours likely started and propagated by those who are unhappy with Rogers (for valid reasons, to be fair). However, if you look at the iPhone prices worldwide, the data rates here are only slightly higher than most of the other iPhone-carrying countries, outside of the U.S., and in fact even lower than some.

The only reason Rogers’ data rates seem so ridiculous is that we seem to be incessantly comparing ourselves to the U.S. — a typical aspect of our national personality, to be fair.

I’m not defending Rogers’ data rates, but if Apple is unhappy with Rogers about them, then they’re likely even more unhappy with the carriers in Germany, Mexico, New Zealand, and Portugal.

Suggesting that Rogers and Apple are engaged in some kind of petty squabble is ridiculous. Apple makes the phone available, Rogers supplies the plans. It’s a simple business arrangement.

  • Yeah, I never expected the iPhone to be sold at Apple Stores anyway, not sure this is news to anyone.

I hope Apple is mad though, cause they’re gonna sell about 10 iPhones in Canada until this plans change. A couple rich dudes will get them, but other rich dudes will go Blackberry, as usual. Surely Apple got a tonne of email from angry Canadians. Bad enough we took 2 years to get movies and tv shows on iTunes…

It’s a matter of time before Rogers will start charging incoming text messages, just like SAF. Rogers probably hopes that people will switch to them before implementing the incoming text message charge. Just like gas stations, once a station raised the price, everyone will follow….

Yeah, again, more news over nothing. We all knew the stores wouldn’t carry it in Canada. I would be willing to bet it’s more a question of the complexity of activation and Rogers and Apple not wanting to deal with the headache that didn’t exist with the 1G/2G in the States with AT & T.

Am I one of the few that believes that if all this fallout was true that there would be much more to read with regard to sources etc. So far, it seems like the same two paragraphs of speculation has been circulating for the past week or so.

Maybe I’m naive, but if a corporation like Apple stiffed a corporation like Rogers a week before shipment, there would be much more noise about it. Plus, are we to believe that Apple had no clue of the Rogers plan before it was released to the public? Please.

I was under the impression from the time of the original announcement of the 3G iPhone that it would only be sold by Rogers/Fido, due to the requirement for signing a 36 month contract (ouch). Can’t see Apple stores wanting to get tangled up in Rogers/Fido contract details, so that makes sense.

As far as the charges for incoming text messages.. rest assured that Rogers will follow in due course – it is the very nature of an oligopoly.

I think this whole thing is being blown way out of proportion! I agree, the plans from Rogers really suck, especially compared to the US. But, there are a lot of complaints from our friends to the south regarding the service they get from AT&T (just google it and you’ll see). Are we getting screwed… YES!!! But, we’re not alone.

I honestly don’t think all this hype is going to cause Rogers to budge one bit, and I think if anything, Mr. Jobs would find all of this quite interesting, if not amusing. Apple and Rogers are doing exactly what they planned… CAUSING MASS HYSTERIA AND HYPE over the iPhone 3G. Look now much press this phone has gotten (FREE) over the last couple of weeks. People will line up for these phones… probably even more so because of all the hype and press.

I hope I’m wrong. We’ll see in just 3 more sleeps!

We just spoke to a CSR @ Rogers today. On July 11th, the frist batch of 3G iphone is reserved for new activation customer only. The second batch, which is about 2 weeks later, will be available for existing customer.

I still don’t understand why everyone complains about data rates… why even pay for it?? use your wifi… most of you who will be able to enjoy the 3G capabilities shouldn’t need to… meaning 3G is only usable in bigger cities, where wifi can be found pretty much everywhere in bigger cities. So why pay for your data, use wifi, or wait the few minutes in between wifi spots. I haven’t had to pay for data yet and I’ve had my iPhone since last November.

  • been in the new Edmonton and Vancouver apple stores, and noted there are no iphone cases at either location.
This kind of distancing from the iphone to me is surprising-

    also,
wouldn’t it HELP fido and rogers to be the sole providers?

I don’t buy the apple is angry and taking it out on rogers by pretending they don’t make iphones speculation.

I do think they are waiting to make a quiet insertion into the canadian market when the dust settles and our country yields some sales data to them.

At least, that’s what I would do if I was observing this nutfest.

Last year most iPhone accessories weren’t put on the shelves in the Apple Stores until the actual launch date, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the same is true this year.

We’ll see what shows up in the Apple Stores on and after this Friday.
