Tips on Choosing the BEST Rogers/Fido iPhone 3G Monthly Plan

Share:

Whoa, what happened to September? The month blew by quickly and it conveniently took away the 6GB/$30 Rogers/Fido data plan (it was extended, remember?) with it. That means if you were lazy and didn’t jump on your opportunity to snag the 6GB data plan, you’re out of luck READ EDIT BELOW! 6GB STILL AVAILABLE! Okay so maybe it’s not the END of the world just quite yet. Rogers and Fido has introduced some updated iPhone 3G monthly plans, along with revised data plans for October. I’m going to give you the breakdown on which plan you should choose and why. I’m going to get right to the point. Let’s get started!

New $60 and $75 iPhone 3G Monthly Plans from Rogers/Fido

Rogers loves to play the game of overwhelming customers with too much data, facts, information, notes, revised notes, etc. This is confusing for all of us and makes picking a monthly plan a painstakingly long process. Let’s jump to the barebone facts of what you need to know:

  • Rogers and Fido have introduced two new monthly plans: $60/$75. Here’s what’s included:
    • Daytime minutes: 250/400
    • Data included: 1GB/2GB
    • Text Messages: 75/100 sent
    • Visual Voicemail
    • Additional minutes: $0.35/minute
    • Unlimited Evenings and weekends:
      • Rogers: 9pm-7am (pure comedy everytime I see 9pm evenings! Some people are already asleep by then)
      • Fido: 7pm-8am (decent)
    • Unlimited Network Calling: Fido ONLY
    • Billing by the second: Fido ONLY
    • Bonus: 3 months unlimited talk/text/data
    • Unlimited Rogers/Fido hot spot access (who actually uses this?!)
  • Fido $75 Plan offers unlimited long distance network calling.
  • You’ll need to add on a value pack ($15) for Caller ID/Visual Voicemail/2500 Texts

Rogers vs Fido iPhone 3G Monthly Plans: Who wins?

As you can see from the condensed data above, it seems that the best iPhone monthly plan is available from Fido! Why? Let me list them for you:

  1. Evenings from 7pm
  2. Billing by the second
  3. Unlimited network calling under the $75 plan

Revised Rogers/Fido Data Plans — Goodbye 6GB/$30 Data!

Just for a quick refresher, the new data plans are as follows:

  • $15 for 2MB
  • $25 for 500MB
  • $30 for 1GB
  • $60 for 3GB

Ouch. These prices are much more expensive than before, but that’s what happens when we have a GSM monopoly in this country. Just be happy if you managed to get the 6GB plan while it was still available!

EDIT: Apparently the 6GB/$30 data plan has not disappeared quite just yet! If you go into a store and ask the service rep about it, they can still add it to your account. I have confirmation from Rogers sources that it is still in the system. So be nice and politely ask for it, and you will get it!

The Rogers Student MY10 Plan

There is still one more option for a decent plan if you’re on Rogers. Currently they are offering their Student MY10 Plan which includes the following for $25/45:

  • MY10 (unlimited talk/text to 10 numbers)
    • The $45 plan includes Canada-wide numbers (great for those who talk long distance)
    • 100/450 weekday minutes (this is the only weak park)
    • 1000 early evenings/weekends at 6PM (yes, 6PM)
    • 500 incoming/unlimited incoming minutes
    • 3 months unlimited local calling as a bonus
  • The $15 value pack is also $5 off. So for $10 you get:
    • Caller ID
    • 125 sent text messages
    • Visual voicemail (trust me, it’s visual voicemail because I know of friends on this plan)
  • Notes:
    • You will require a valid student ID for this plan. Although if you know of a friend, family member, neighbour, or pet in school you can just borrow their ID. Call in to get this over the phone and it should be no problem!
    • This plan ends on November 3rd, 2008
    • You’re allowed one MY10 change per month. Meaning you can change numbers only once a month.

Comparing My10 vs iPhone $60 vs Fido Killer EPP

So let’s say you went with the $25 MY10 plan, add on the $10 value pack, plus $25 for 500MB of data, you’re looking at the following bill:

Student My10: $25 + $10 + $25 + $6.95 + $0.50 = $67.45 + taxes

iPhone $60 plan: $60 + $15 (value pack) + $6.95 + $0.50 = $82.45 + taxes (this doesn’t even include early evening calling if you choose Rogers!)

The $60 iPhone plan includes 500MB more of data, and 150 more daytime minutes. However, the My10 will save you money big time since the evenings start at 6PM, plus My10 allows unlimited chat with your 10 most called people AND 500 incoming minutes. How often do you call more than 10 numbers?

Want more? Another possibility is taking advantage of the Fido Killer Offer or Rogers EPP Plan, which starts off at $17.50 for 200 daytime minutes, and 1000 evenings/weekends starting at 5pm. So you’d be looking at:

Fido Killer Plan: $17.50 + $15 (value pack) + $25 (500MB data) + $6.95 + $0.50 = $64.95 + tax

“Wait a minute, what happened to the 6GB/$30 data plan?!”

Now you’re probably disappointed that you missed the 6GB/$30 data plan boat. Well, as the saying goes, “you snooze, you lose!”. But realistically, $25 for 500MB is overpriced compared to the old plan. However, over my first two months of usage everyday, I’ve yet to surpass 500MB of data use a month. For the average user, 500MB a month is a lot of data to consume. You’re only ever going to surpass this if you’re tethering your data plan or streaming internet radio all day. Still though, knowing that you could’ve paid $1/200MB instead of $1/17MB is painful (based on $25 for 500MB). READ ABOVE EDIT REGARDING 6GB/$30 DATA!

So What Plan is Best for Me?

Personally if I was signing up for a new iPhone 3G at this very moment, I would be very disappointed due to these less than stellar prices. It seems the best bang for your buck if you can swing it is the Student My10 plan because you will save on early evenings at 6PM,  MY10 is pretty awesome, plus $10 for the value pack is cool too. Too bad it’s only available for students!

If you’re not eligible for the Student MY10 plan, your best bet is to start a Fido Killer Plan. You get earlier evenings and billing by the second. Having billing by the second will save you immensely on your bill in the long run. This was just a brief breakdown on how to maximize your iPhone 3G plan. If you have better plans out there, please feel free to share it with the rest of us!

Rogers and Fido are real money suckers, I still not intrested in data plans, even $30 for 6G. Wifi at home, in school, working place , and cafe are quite enough for iphone. other time I just travelling ( may be walking, or driving), there is no very much chance to use the 3G. Think about yourself, when will you actually use 3G. Is that worthy to pay that much money? If you do have 3G, how much time you are really using 3G wherever the place does not cover by wifi?

I bought 2 iphone 3g before the $30/6gb ended, the white iphone 16g with the killer plan $17.50 and $30/6gb for my wife. The other black iphone 8g with the killer plan $17.50 with no data (data blocked and gauranteed)for me.I am using wi-fi at home and very happy with my plans. All and all the monthly charges are $60/ plus….plus for 2 iphones for 400 mins. Before i changed the plan i was paying $35.00 with 250 mins for 1 phone (nokia 6300)and,if i choose to,i might sell the 8gb iphone 3g and use the Fido simcard on my nokia 6300.I still have 2 phones and be still ahead of the game for 3 years.By the way, we use her iphone when we go out because her iphone have the 6gb data. What do you think? Good,eh? or not?

I was thinking all throughout September about getting the 6 GB plan, but I couldnt justify committing to 3 years @ 30$/month, which is 1220 including tax. And all the new plans are jokes, so I called into Rogers and had them diable my internet, so now I use soley wi-fi, living with it just fine.

If you and your wife are on the same account, and have the same phone, you can share the 6gb data plan for free, so it’s like 3gb for both of you.

  • I pay $80 roughly per month for my iPhone.

6GB data (last bill I had like 150MB)
Unlimited Evenings and Weekends (after 6pm)
    Unlimited Incoming
Unlimited Rogers to Rogers to Fido
Unlimited (2500/month) text messages (i use like 20 a month lol)
Visual Voicemail (comes with the 2500 txt msgs meh)

That’s only like $10-$20 more per month than what I paid prior to the iPhone so I’m content. Just waiting for my $50 credit which should be on this bill.

Most of my data usage is via WiFi and I have yet to jailbreak my phone. Why? Haven’t really seen anything for me to really want me to do it. Sure I could skin it, add that video app who knows…

i have basically the sam set up as Tyler, only I’ll be paying $20 more ( dont know why it’s more)….
As much as that is obscene amount to be paying monthly – it’s exactly what would
    have been going to Telus. Don’t know if anyone else out there is aware;

Telus internet and phone services have gone down in price… it’s a fluke I found out..
Even if you are in there “one year, price protection plan” , they will not inform you
of the lower service costs per month…
Also, Telus decided to implement an extra months charge in may due to a
” combining of internet and phone cycles “…. WOW, that was 10 months into
my twelve month contract that they decided to alter the agreement.

When asked about the “price protection plan rate” Telus long winded reply
equates to ; You the consumer are only protected from the price increasing.

SO , Shaw doesn’t implement a contract- what good is a 12 month Price Protection contract at Telus?
Last- be prepared… they have out sourced to a call center in the Philippines.
No Telus services offered in the Philippines but hey they have top notch customer
    support to help you.
So again, it’s exactly the amount of $ that would have been going to Telus.

One thing to keep in mind about fido is that on MOST plans Fido will charge you roaming when you are using the Rogers network. Fido only has their own network infrastructure within major cities. I’m not sure if this applies to 3G usage as Rogers is the only 3G network in Canada.. But just double check in your contract that your plan includes roaming on the Rogers network… or you’ll get charged for it.

    @ Thomas,

I dont think you get charged roaming (like you would in USA). You get charged the regular minute rate. Rogers/Fido Networks are the same, only Fido is a smaller subset within major cities.

you’re correct. It is a ‘roaming’ charge though as you’re roaming on the Rogers network from the Fido network. But it’s not the same price as the USA obviously (just as the UK, Italy, Australia etc… aren’t the same prices). My sister gets it on her plan… Still, I’d rather just be with Rogers and not pay 35c/min to use my phone outside of the city… That’s just my opinion though. If you never leave the city, it’s probably worth it for the better Fido plan.

(ps. hope you’re right about the 6gb, I’ll try it tomorrow, my store is closing now)

I would like to know more about how sharing the 6GB data works between family members.

Anyone confirmed this actually works? If so it could put me over the edge to purchase a phone. Also, we call a fair bit of long distance (within the province). How much extra are long distance calls?

I really want to get an iPhone for myself and one for my wife, but I can’t bring myself to paying $30/mth each for data. $15/mth is much more reasonable.

    Thanks.

just go to your rogers store and ask a guythere. If he says no, go to another store or try again later. I know the guys at the doers centre will do it.

Has anyone confirmed that the 6Gb plan can be shared by two phones on the same rogers account?

  • Fido is a massive ripoff – I called and inquired and they said one thing – then I called and they said another. Dishonest ripoff.

The only thing i don’t understand about the Student My10 plan is this: 100 or 450 WEEKDAY (not sat or sun) minutes are included. Are they seriously going to charge regular rates for weekend daytime minutes (not my10 numbers of course)?

I got the iphone without the data plan and had data disabled – Rogers will not tell you this is an option and try to fear monger you into the data plan. It is possible on any phone, but with the iphone they need to add extra blocks for data.

This essentially makes it an ipod touch with phone capabilities and saves me 30$. Of course this is only if you don’t need internet on the go. But a good budget conscious alternative.

So heres my idea. I own an iphone with out contract and im with pay as you go, data blocked/ internet.
So people might ask, Why would you spend that much money buying one then going on contract? well Im pretty sure most of you know that that even with or with out the data plan you be spend about lets lay 60-80. so with a tree year contract you are intotal spending : 2-3 grand. SO with that money saved, you couldve bought an iphone off of ebay or even just locally if you lucky enough. I also believe in the states At&t is realsing refurbished iphones without contracts for 199( Probably wrong) but it is very unlikely that tehy will do so.
However, my point point is that unlike the US, Iphone bills are wallet killers in Canada, Rogers and fido deffinetly eat you up with their plans. I would just suggest people to find and go buy a seperate iphone or just get a normal glip phone? :p

  • Wow, I pay 40$ a month, for unlimited data, txt unlimited internationally, voice, unlimited long distance Canada & US,Caller id, voice mail, conference call,  as long as I am in a wind zone (which I am 99% of them time). I cannot imagine paying 30$ just for data.  Of course, there is no iphone on the wind frequencies, but that is ok, I much prefer the android phones and the free apps I use. There is only one real estate app I use on my ipad that is not available on the android phone, but they are working on it, as they realized the market is huge on android as well. I wish there was a North American plan for unlimited everything for 50 or 60$, data and voice anywhere in Canada and us. I won’t hold my breath.
