How to Unlock OTB 1.1.2, 1.1.3 iPhones!

Share:

The wait is over! For those Canadians with 1.1.2 OTB and 1.1.3 OTB iPhones, your day has finally come! If you bought your iPhone and it came with 1.1.2 or 1.1.3 firmware out of the box, this is the guide you have been waiting for!

The software unlock has been released by GeoHot (send him a donation if this works for you)…and iPhone lovers out there are rejoicing over this incredible breakthrough! For all you people out there thinking of buying an iPhone in the USA to use with Rogers or Fido in Canada…now is the time to do it! You’re free!

The following guide is thanks to GeeZuZz from the Hackint0sh forums (who also has posted it on Unlock.no). He has taken the time to put together this excellent guide on how to unlock your OTB 1.1.2 iPhone. Please be warned, this is ONLY for NEW iPhones that are 1.1.2 or 1.1.3, with the 4.6 bootloader. Do not attempt this if your bootloader is on 3.9! Ready? Here we go!

Disclaimer: Only try this if you are aware of the chance that something might go wrong…as these tutorials are still in early stages and being tested. You’ve been warned! =)

How to Unlock Your OTB 1.1.2 or 1.1.3 iPhone

Don’t do this if you phone has 3.9 bootloader. Do it if your phone shown this image first time you started it (meaning it had 1.1.2/3 and bootloader 4.6). If your phone had a picture of the earth when you started it first time, follow instructions here instead.

Step 1: Install 1.1.1 firmware
If your phone is already activated on any other firmware you can skip Step 1 and Step 2. But you would need to add http://i.unlock.no/ as a source in Installed manually.

To get 1.1.1 firmware installed, you must get the phone enter recovery mode. Here’s how to do this:

  1. Connect the phone to the computer and press and hold the Power button (on top) and the Home button (on bottom front) simultaneously.
  2. After about 15 seconds phone will appear to turn off, release the Power button but keep holding the Home button.
  3. After about 15 seconds the computer and iTunes will detect the phone in recovery mode.
  4. (links fixed!) Download the following two files to your computer if you haven’t already: 1.1.1 firmware and 1.1.2 firmware
  5. Hold down SHIFT key (Windows) or Option/ALT-key (Mac) when clicking the Restore button in iTunes, and it will let you choose firmware file. Select the 1.1.1 firmware file you downloaded in previous step.
  6. iTunes will give give a 1015 error, and you phone will get stuck in recovery mode.
  7. To get it into normal mode, run AppTapInstaller.exe (or iNdependence if your’re on a Mac). If you are downgrading from 1.1.3 you might have problems getting it started in normal mode. The solution is simple, just restore your phone to 1.1.1 again, and this time it will work
  8. Now your phone should be at the activation screen.

Step 2: Jailbreak and unlock

  1. Make sure you have a SIM-card with PIN turned off (the supplied AT&T card works fine).
  2. On the activation screen, slide for emergency and dial: *#301# to make the phone call itself.
(If the incoming call dialog quickly disappears but it keeps ringing, just dial 0 (remove *#301# first), and it will call itself)
  3. Answer the call, and tap on Hold
  4. Phone will call it self again, tap Decline. You will now be returned to the normal dialer.
  5. Tap on contacts, and tap the + icon to add a new. The only info you are going to add to this contact are two URL’s. To add a URL, tap Add new URL. The first URL is prefs followed by a colon: prefs: and the second is i.unlock.no. Tap Save.
  6. Your contact now has two “web pages” – tap on the first one (prefs. This will take you to the settings dialog. The reason you want this, is because you need to connect to a Wi-Fi network, so tap on Wi-Fi, and get connected to a network, and make sure the icon on top of the screen is indicating that you are connected. While you are in the settings dialog, you should also set: General –> Auto-Lock –> Never.
  7. Now, press the home button, and again, slide for emergency dial 0, Answer the call, Hold and Decline the new call so that you get to the contacts. Tap on your contact (No Name), and this time tap on the other home page, i.unlock.no
  8. Safari will launch and show you a web page. Tap on Tap here to jailbreak your iPhone
  9. Phone will return to activation screen and after a few seconds the phone should restart.
  10. If the phone does not restart after waiting a full minute, please make sure that you have your phone connected to the computer and try again.
  11. When the phone starts again, it should no longer say slide for emergency, but rather Slide to unlock It means it was successful! Activation is now bypassed, and phone prepared for software installation! (If you are going to use an AT&T SIM, you won’t need to do the next step.)

Step 3: Performing the unlock

Add http://i.unlock.no/ to Installer sources if you didn’t follow this tutorial

  1. Tap on the Installer icon, and wait for it to refresh the sources
  2. Tap on Install at the bottom
  3. Scroll down to Unlocking Tools and install 1.1.2/1.1.3 OTB Unlock
  4. The process will take a few minutes, before you get a message that it completed successfully

Step 4: Upgrade to 1.1.2
Even though the phone is already unlocked, it will not get a signal. To fix this upgrade to 1.1.2:

  1. Open iTunes again and hold down the SHIFT key (Windows) or Option/ALT-key (Mac) on your keyboard while clicking on the Upgrade button (not the restore button!). A file browsing dialog should appear, and you must select the 1.1.2 firmware file you downloaded previously.
  2. While the phone is upgrading, download the 1.1.2 jailbreak archive and extract the files to your computer.
  3. If you don’t already have Java on your computer, you need to download and install Java runtime first. If you are unsure, check the jailbreak.jar file in the archive you extracted previously – it should have an icon with a coffee cup
  4. When your phone is done upgrading, and shows the Slide for emergency screen, you need to launch the jailbreak java application on your computer. Windows users double click on the windows.bat file, while Mac users can double click on jailbreak.jar file.
  5. An application should appear, with a “Jailbreak” button – click on it and wait while it’s jailbreaking. This will take a few minutes, and your phone will restart a few times at the end.
  6. Your phone should now show “Slide to unlock” instead of emergency. If it does, everything was successful.

Step 5: Finishing the unlock
Now your phone will accept any SIM-card and you will get signal. Congratulations!

But if you are using your phone in a foreign country, the Phone/SMS application will just crash.

Very important!: Open Installer and install iWorld found in the Tweaks 1.1.2 category. Start iWorld and select your country and it will fix the crashing problem.

If you want to upgrade to 1.1.3, there’s a package called Official 1.1.3 Upgrader located in the System category. Installing it will upgrade your phone to a jailbroken 1.1.3. Be aware that it will take some time (15-40 minutes).

Want to try another Guide? Here’s another courtesy of iClarified:

Instructions on how to unlock your 1.1.2 OTB and 1.1.3 OTB iPhone!

These instructions assume that you have already jailbroken the particular firmware you would like to be on. This works from 1.1.2 or 1.1.3 firmware! You can find instructions on how to do that here:

Jailbreak 1.1.2: Windows, Mac
Jailbreak 1.1.3: Installer, Windows, Mac
Downgrade 1.1.3: Windows, Mac

Also, you can only follow these instructions if you are on a 4.6 BL iPhone. This means that your iPhone came with 1.1.2 or 1.1.3 Out of the Box. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU DON’T DO THIS ON A 3.9 BL IPHONE!

IMPORTANT*: You must have enough disk space free on your iPhone to install this package. Otherwise Installer may display a beach ball and then crash to the Springboard. You need space free on your ROOT file system. Your root file system is about 267M-300M in size. Its NOT the 7.3G file system! A tutorial on how to do this can be found here

Finally, you need BSD Subsystem Installed from Installer app (System Category). This most likely will already be installed especially if you did the 1.1.3 soft update…

If you have 1.1.3 OTB follow the downgrade link above to downgrade and jailbreak your iPhone.

  1. Add iClarified to your Installer sources. You can find instructions on how to do that: here
  2. Press the Settings icon on your Springboard.
  3. Press to select General from the Settings list.
  4. Press to select Auto-Lock from the General Menu.
  5. Press to select Never from the Auto-Lock Menu.
  6. Press the Home button to return to your Springboard. Press the Installer icon to launch Installer app.
  7. Press to select the Install tab at the bottom of the screen.
  8. Press to select iClarified from the list of Categories.
  9. Press to select Geohot Unlock(1.1.2, 1.1.3) from the list of Packages.
  10. Press the Install button at the top right hand corner.
  11. Press the large red Install button that appears.
  12. You will receive notice that process will take 5 minutes and you must have Auto-Lock set to Never. If you have already done this then you can press the large OK button.
  13. You will see a status of Starting the unlock…. You will also lose Wi-Fi during this time. The phone will stay on this status for a few minutes.
  14. You will then receive a Notice saying “Your iPhone has now been unlocked!”. Press the large OK button!
  15. You will be returned to the Categories Menu. Press the Home button to return to your Springboard.
  16. Install iWorld via Installer and the Tweaks 1.1.2 category if you’re using a SIM that is non-US or non-UK…DONE! You can donate to GEOHOT here.

There you have it! If these tutorials have worked out for you, please let us know in the comments! I haven’t tried them, but both tutorials have reported to be successful by users online. However, with all tutorials some people might encounter unforeseen problems–so beware!

Hmm…does anyone smell a 16GB iPhone coming my way? πŸ˜‰

Last night, I followed the first method and it worked. I was one of those who “accidentally” upgraded my 1.1.2OTB/Stealthsim to 1.1.3 via iTunes. By following the first set of instructions, the phone is in operation on Fido without Stealthsim. Right now my modem firmware returned to 04.02.13_G (from iTunes upgrade’s 04.03.13_G). I haven’t upgraded to 1.1.3 using Official Upgrader yet. Don’t be afraid to try it, guys. So… what do I do with that plastic filmsy thingy that’s stuck on the back of my clipped SIM??? πŸ˜‰

Thanks for this great resource. Will be taking the plunge soon but knew I was going to have to wait for this development.

The process is well laid out and I’m sure will become even moreso in the next couple of weeks.

  • There is a new unlock out, that is a GUI interface. Expect a post to come in 30 mins or so.

Basically, you take your 1.1.3 OTB into “recovery mode” (follow their website for instructions, you need to download a program)…once in recovery mode, you run the program and it will jailbreak, activate, and unlock your 1.1.3 OTB!!!

Well I made it to the US, and got my 16Gb iPhone.. I can officially say that I have unlocked it and I am happy to use it as an iPod touch until the support from Rogers is official(will see if I can resist).

I used the following thread to unlock my 16Gb iPhone OTB 113. http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=29554. I was sweating when doing the update.. but since I am was in the US, I figure that if something goes wrong, I would just return it…luckily I didn’t have to return it.

Hi everyone. Fantastic resources on this site! Great work! I just applied this process to my new 1.1.3 OTB iPhone and everything worked flawlessly. The only step I haven’t taken is the update to 1.1.3 (currently at 1.1.2). Essentially what I’m wondering is:

    – Are there any issues when upgrading to 1.1.3 with the “officicial upgrader” listed at the end of the tutorial? I ask because there seems to be reports of issues with other 1.1.3 methods.
    – I have already installed other apps, should this update have been applied beforehand? (since I read something about this being a possible issue as well)
    – And my last general question: with all these new methods being posted (and especially this one), can the phone always be returned to the default/new state with a “restore” or is there still a possibility of “bricking” or other permanent damage in doing so?

    Thanks everyone πŸ™‚

Use ZiPhone to unlock your phone. This is a very complicated way compared to ZiPhone.
