Mini iPhone 3G Review Part 1: Initial Impressions

Share:

Even after the whole iPhone 3G launch day SNAFU, I managed to nab an 8GB iPhone 3G later on in the day. This was in Victoria where I am here to attend a friend’s wedding. On Friday afternoon I called the stores in town to see if any iPhone 3G units were in stock. Most had NONE but the Rogers Wireless at Tillicum Mall had six 8GB units left!

So upon finding out that information I hopped into the car and raced down to the mall. Due to the massive outages at Rogers and Apple, they did not activate any iPhones at this location! So I was told I’d get a call tomorrow to finish up the job.

Yesterday morning the rep called me back as promised. I gave him my info over the phone, he filled in the paperwork and once again I went back to the mall. After selecting the following plan, he activated my new iPhone 3G and I was on my merry little way! My current plan:

$35 Mega Time
$30 for 6GB data
$15 Visual Voicemail pack/2500 texts/CID/Who Called
$7.45 SAF/911
Grand total: $98.20/month after taxes.

What were my initial thoughts of the iPhone 3G?
Here are some of my brief observations from jumping straight to the 3G from my first gen:
– phone feels a lot lighter compared to first generation; feels like a toy, whereas the first gen felt very solid. Probably due to metal vs plastic backing…
– Visual Voicemail is AMAZING. It’s so easy to listen and delete voice messages! Eureka!
– A-GPS is pretty neat. Watching the flashing blue dot follow your every move during driving is pretty interesting
– 3G speeds on Rogers is BLAZING fast. At times I felt it was rivalling WiFi!
– The 6GB data plan gives you a lot to use. Today I checked email, watched a YouTube clip, and surfed the web. I used about 25MB by the end of the day. It’s going to be a challenge to max out or exceed 6GB.
– The silent switch button is much bigger and very easy to use. Volume buttons feel very sturdy.
– Speaker and ear piece volume is SIGNIFICANTLY better than first gen. Ringtones are louder, and I can hear much better during phone conversations.
– Screen contrast seems to be up a notch or two. Colors look richer and darks really stand out. Maybe it’s because I don’t have any protective films on the phone yet.
– Pictures taken by the camera seem to have improved. Shots appear more crisp.
– FINGERPRINTS: this sucker catches up everything and since it’s black–it shows! So I have an invisibleSHIELD coming my way…it should be an excellent fit to my iPhone 3G! Have you ordered yours yet?

This review will continue tomorrow with pictures. Stay tuned for side by side comparisons with my first gen iPhone, plus tips on how to setup your iPhone 3G to have the same settings as your first gen. Stay tuned!

I’m curious if the signal bar is stronger on the 3G then 1st gen because of its plastic back.

yeah I’d like to know when Apple is shipping more iPhones to the Rogers stores?! I’ve called them and they act as if they were told not to tell customers when they are getting more or something. :-[

  • The Rogers stores probably don’t actually know when they will be getting more. When I was there on launch day the store I was at was actually receiving phones throughout the day.

I would bet they should start seeing more either Tuesday or Thursday this week.

I’m also curious about signal strength. So far I love my iPhone, all except for the actual “phone” part. My signal strength is just plain awful. 1/2 a bar in most houses I’ve been in (no bars in the basement), no reception in Superstore or Wal Mart. Even outside my house, I get only a couple of bars. I live right in a 3G area (Regina, SK), and other phones on Rogers get WAY better reception (although I’ve not seen any other 3G phones). Is anyone else having problems?

Here’s the contract I ended up with:
    $20 My5 plan (E/W start at 6)
    $30 Data plan
one-time “downgrade fee” of $50 because I didn’t go with a “voice” plan of $30 or more (even though the Rogers guy at the kiosk told me the day before that the fact that the data plan is $30 would be enough to get around that extra fee).

I showed up at 6:00AM on Friday and I was second in line at my location (which was a mall kiosk). The manager actually came up and hung out with us until the mall opened, which was awesome since he fielded questions the whole time. Once we were in the mall, we all went over to the kiosk hung out. He he bought doughnuts and drinks for everyone. He told us how many units he had in stock (4 16GB and 20 8Gb units), and once he had enough people in line to account for everything he had, he told each newcomer (suggesting when his next shipment would be, and also suggesting what other locations they could try), so nobody waited in line for something they weren’t going to get. He was actually really cool about everything, so my first experience with Rogers customer service was an excellent one.

Unfortunately, as soon as he was allowed to log in (9AM central time), Rogers servers went down, so even though I was second in line, I didn’t get out of there until 11AM. I eventually found out that the last guy in line didn’t get his activated until the next day!

So that’s my iPhone experience. I think it was probably better than most.

I’ve spoken to a few Rogers stores here in Toronto and while they “can’t officially disclose the next shipment date”, most have been hinting at a Tuesday or Thursday shipment.

I am curious about being able to buy the iPhone for its $199 and $299 price tag, if my current plan with rogers is over $30 AFTER taxes, would I still be eligible?

Also, if I dont buy a data plan, GPS is still available right?

Finally, what does Rogers mean when they say that current customers can keep their existing voice plan? Does that mean that I will have my currrent voice plan and the same voice plan for my iPhone, leaving me with 2 voice plans, or will my current voice plan be transferred on to the iPhone, so that I only have 1 voice plan.

    Thanks.

you CAN NOT upgrade your old phone to 2.0 without bricking it currently. Rogers never sold the original iphone, so if they allow you to “legally” upgrade they would have to service it, and they aren’t going to do that, when they never made any money off the phone sale. plus, to bring the phone here originally you would have broken the terms of service with apple and at&t, and apple would never have allowed a partner to condone that. just wait a week or two, 2.0 has been unlocked, the development team is just testing it.

    next shipments Tuesday.

It’s what I heard in the store Friday…and what I have heard online…and what I heard from the Rogers phone rep’s.

It’s not official…but its something to go on.

Also…my good friend knows 2 managers of the Costco kiosks in my city…and they even told him to come talk to them on Tuesday to work something out (he was too lazy to wait in line with me Friday…but after playing with my 16GB white iPhone all last nite and only using 50MB…he is more than sold…and I am more than worried that I wont get anywhere NEAR using my 6GB of data in a month haha…could be impossible if you work)

I ordered 2 iPhones on a new family plan yesterday through the 1-800-ROGERS1 number and it was easy peasy. The guy said UPS would have it to my door no later than next Friday, and he was pretty sure it would be even sooner than that.

$35 Family plan x 2 ($70) includes 350 min per phone plus a bonus 200 min for 900 total shared min
    – $15 value pack per phone as Gary did (not exactly the same iPhone value pack being I didn’t get an iPhone plan per se
    – With everything works out to about $180 per month for 2 phones
    – Of note – the guy said that had I bought the $30 family plan x 2, I would have had to pay an extra $50 per phone.
    – Buying over the phone – saves activation fee and initial network fee, so almost $100 in savings right there. He said in-store can’t do that deal though both in-store and over the phone can offer 3 months unlimited local calls.

Instore on Friday…a guy and his wife were 1st in line. The husband had had his 1st Gen iPhone for a while…but was upgradiong to the 3G and giving his wife his 1st Gen to use.

The Roger’s reps had NO problem at all setting this guys old phone up after activating his new one. They didnt even care…it wasnt even an issue. They both got the “6GB data for $30” ontop of their voice plans. I assume if you can put a SIM card in it…Rogers doesnt give a shit just as long as you pay them monthly, but who knows, I am no techie. Maybe they just set him up with a data plan…and let him put the SIM card in or something?

    @ Darren

you iPhone will have your current voice plan…and you just add the data to it for $30 if you choose the 6GB package.

    so…

Current Voice Plan + Data + Iphone Value Packs (if you want call display and some other stuff) + Service Activation Fee = Your iPhone Plan

if you are an existing rogers customer they will bend you over the barrel and hit you with rediculous fees as well….customer loyalty doenst exist anymore apparently

I was just in the mall, and tried to figure out when some more iPhones were shipping.

The guy at the Rogers store told me it would cost me $800+ to upgrade my phone to an iPhone. (!?!?!?!)!!

I’m a current Rogers customer on a three year deal (started August 07), and my plan is $42 base + some other things. It comes out to just under $100/month after taxes.

    Anyone else have similar experiences/solution?

    @ Rob:

the question was not if a 1st gen iphone would work in Canada, it was if upgrading to the 2.0 software would work. the software requires authorization, and currently the only way to get is to have an at&t (or other country that sold the original iphone) account, or to hack it. i’ve had an original iphone since november of last year, and trust me, the 2.0 software will lock it and require activation until it is hacked, which like i said should be in a week or two. Rogers did not sell the original iphone, and offering the software would mean they would need to support it, not as in cell service (they don’t care about that as long as you pay they are cool) i mean service as in “i can’t get my email to work” service.

I have had a terrible experience in trying to buy the iPhone.

I decided to buy it after the 6 GB data plan for $30 came on. Unfortunately, I will never be able to get that. I have had my current phone for 10.5 months, it reaches 12 months in September. I’ve used Rogers for over 6 years, paying what I would conservatively estimate to be $4,000 for their cellular services. My family has used Rogers for at least two decades, and has a monthly cellular total of $200 with them, not to mention more for other services.

I called Rogers to order a 16 GB iPhone. They told me I was not eligible because I was not in the upgrade window. Mind you, I’ve had a three-year and two-year contract before this, I’ve been using Rogers forvever! They said I couldn’t upgrade until September, at which point obviously, I don’t know if the 6 GB data plan will be available because it expires at the end of August. I spoke to a Manager to no avail.

Well Rogers, this is the final straw. A customer who has given your company over $4,000, and wants to purchase another product and pay you more for a device that is already considered overpriced is turned away because you can’t waive 90 days for an upgrade. I’m canceling every account I have with you, I’m getting my family to do the same, and I am done with a cell company whose customer service standards are non-existent. Shame on you Rogers.

    Hi
I am a Fido customer with city fido. would NEVER want to lose that plan.Unfortunatly, my renewal period would not come up till march next year so i cant upgrade to iphone 3g. i wasnt too sad about it given initial 3g data rates, but the 6GB for 30$ is virtually unlimited as i dont think i would ever surpass it so thats more than good enough for me, but still i could not get it since i didnt get the iphone 3g.. but good news!!! i just called fido and asked them to put me on the 3p$ data plan for 3 years and he did it. then i went to the iphone classis settigns and set up the edge network (as instructed in this forum on another thread)
and viola.. i am on edge with 30$ for 6GB.. come march.. ill upgrade using my fido dollars to the new iphone but for sure.. i have locked in to 2 preety amazing packates.. 45$ unilimited voice and 30$ “virtually unlimited” data.

    O yeah,
I confirmed with a second apple employee that due to “Canadian software/Tax laws” we can not purchase anything from the apps store with iTunes cards/credit. So dont buy any iTune gift cards expecting to be able to buy Apps!
Looks like I have to spend a $100 on crappy music!

To TRENT: yes my 3G is also showing poor reception compared to my old GSM Motorola RIZR. Can barely get reception inside my house, often dropping and showing 1 or 2 bars. Outside miy house is better – about 3 bars, and full strength in the highway.

I compared it side by side with my friend’s 1st gen iPhone with Fido plan (I’m with Rogers) and his shows 3 bars in my house when I’m barely hanging on to 1.

I hope this is not a global problem which means I can replace mine for a “normal” one with better reception. Otherwise it sucks not to have a usable phone at home.

I have a question about the A-GPS. I have heard conflicting things about whether or not the iPhone supports turn-by-turn with the GPS. That is, can I give the iPhone an address and have it direct me to that address by speaking out directions to me?

    Thanks!

Question: to you who just got the iPhone and were already rogers customers…..
Did you pay for your new phone on the spot or was the cost placed on your rogers account???
I’m wondering if I got a free phone I can’t seem to find evidence of my account being charged and I didn’t pay on the spot. I’m almost feeling guilty about calling rogers and complaining about not having use of my cell phone for half a day, resulting in a $100 credit to my account.
Well I’m sure I get over it!

Hi, i just picked up my 8GB iphone 3 G that i had reserved on friday but took 2 days to activate. Anyhow, i didn’t have to sign up for anything other then a renewal of my voiceplan! i was never asked for the 3 year data plan, it was suggested to consider it and do so before August deadline. As a hardware upgrade it cost me $249 and the salesperson gave me a $50 coupon to mail in, all in all $199 !!!
initial thoughts of the phone, it’s OK.
    – the signal is VERY weak
    – WIFI, connecting to my network is ok but isn’t able to send/receive any info from it even though my laptop is working fine! I think that rogers may have tweaked the wifi so that you have to subscribe to their home calling network….just a thought.
    – can’t connect to internet, have $7 mobile option on my plan…settings? rogers blocked? wifi not working?
Is anyone else having these issues?

    RE: Weak signal strength
From what I’ve been able to figure out, the weak signal on my iPhone only happens when I’m on a 3D network. If I turn off 3G, I get more bars in my house. This still sucks, but explains why the 1st gen iPhone appears to have better signal strength.

Has anyone been able to get an iphone with retention credits??
My contract expires next month and I currently have a $15 credit on a $25 unlimited incoming plan. I don’t want to give up this voiceplan, but I am told that if I get an iphone with the data plan they’ll take out the credits.

Fido rep told me they can renew a 2-yr contract with the $15 credit on any other phone. Any suggestions? Loopholes around this?

I just got my IPhone from a Rogers location, and for some reason, they charged me 350$ (instead of 299) for the 16GB model since ‘my voice plan was below 35$… Still I’m paying more than 60$ if you take into account the data plan…

Anyone else has been overcharged like this? I thought Apple made it clear they were for sale at 299$ with a contract, right?

Yes, I was screwed over by Rogers as well. i ordered the iPhone 16GB over the phone with a Rogers rep last week and received my iPhone today by UPS along with an invoice for the iPhone showing $350 + tax! At the time of ordering, no one told me the phone could be more expensive than the $300 advertised dependent on the voice plan selected! I called today to complain. Not only are they unapologetic for misleading customers on their website, they don’t think there’s anything wrong with it!

The Rogers rep that I spoke to about being charged $350 for my hardware upgrade told me that the extra $50 will be credited back to my account over a 2 month period and in the end I am being charged the same amount as new customers.

to respond to Craig, your not paying $60 for sure, your not taking into account the access fees and taxes, so theres no way your paying only $60
if so let me know how
