Getting the Most out of your new iPhone 3G Plan

My situation is that I’m 8 months into a one year contract which does not qualify me for the hardware upgrade. So it looks like if I am going to get iPhone 3G I will have to sign a brand new 3 year contract (and give my retention plan to my mistress). The official word right now is that you MUST have a minimum $30 voice plan to be eligible for the 6GB data plan.

For those of you new sign ups, here are some possible plans under $100 (thanks to nigel for starting this thread:)

From repoman:
My5 35 Mega Value Plan (unlimited long distance talk and text to 5 numbers + 250 Anytime minutes + UNL. E &WE) – $35
6GB of Data – $30
$11 Value Pack (call display, enhanced voicemail, 125 texts, whocalled) – $11
SAF + 911 – $7.50
SubTotal – $83.50
Total – $94.36/mo including taxes.

OR

Mega Time 35 (200+50 bonus WD+Unlimited EW+Network Calling, Rogers.com $10 Activation Credit)
6GB of data – $30
New $15 value pack (has the VVM, call display, Who called, 2500 texts, first month free)
SAF + 911 – $7.50
Subtotal = 87.50
$98/month = total after taxes (1.12% –thanks for the tax reminder NetChick, LOL)
*add $7 for early evenings at 6pm

iPhone App Store and iTunes 7.7 Released

iTunes 7.7 has been released and our friends in the USA are having a great time with newly released 2.0 firmware. It’s just a matter of time before Canadians can experience it themselves! One more day…

Thanks to iPhone Atlas for the image!

Where does the 30$ voice plan thing comes from???

This is what Rogers said in their press release:

Effective July 11, and as a limited time promotional offer for customers
who activate by August 31 on a three year contract, a data-only offering of
6GB of data for $30 per month is being made available that can be added to any
in-market voice plan. For example, with 6GB of data, iPhone 3G users can visit
35,952 web pages, or send and receive 157,286 emails, or watch 6,292 minutes
of YouTube videos each and every month.(xx)

How do you know that “the official word right now is that you MUST have a minimum $30 voice plan to be eligible for the 6GB data plan”? I’m on a family plan but it’s just $25 right now for myself so I may have to change…although it’s $45 for both lines……so now I’m confused πŸ™‚

  • tried the upgrade today to 2.0
    -downloaded 2.0
    -upgraded itunes
-installed the upgrade with the option key, took 15 minutes
CRAP! no restore option presented, INSTEAD
got a msg that the sim isn’t supported!

    hopefully it will work tomorrow
    meanwhile, no phone at all

(kicking myself for believing a blog that it would work)

I’m pretty sure you can get the 6GB plan with ANY voice plan currently being offered.

The minimum $30 plan restriction is with regards to the hardware subsidy. My understanding is that Roger’s will be charging $249 (8GB Model) and $349 (16GB model) tomorrow, and QUALIFYING contracts will get a credit on their first or second invoice for $50. Only $30/month contracts.

What this means is that you can get the 6GB/$30 plan with ANY voice plan, but it will cost you your $50 invoice credit.

If you’re not going to use more than the $25 plan in minutes, stick with the plan you want and forget about the credit. The credit is $56.50 after tax, and saving $5/month on your plan over 3 years saves $203.40, a NET savings of $146.90.

The big question for me is whether Visual Voicemail is included. If not, how much does it cost. I can say with fair certainty that VVM is included in the iPhone “Value Packs”, even though its not listed. Otherwise, just ask for the Windows Mobile value pack, which includes everything the $15 iPhone value pack does, plus enhanced voicemail…which most rumours claim will equate to Visual Voicemail in practice.

  • can somebody post the like to the my5 30 mega value pack. I cant find it on rogers’ site. There’s a thing that says just “my5” under the mega value pack category but more info only says unlimited text/voice etc to 5 numbers. Nothing about regular minutes as i want to know if thats the plan or an addon to an existing voice plan.

    Thanks

  • sorry to post twice..
I just called my local Rogers store and they said they don’t know if there is a minimum voice plan required (they said they tried to get an iphone up and running but couldn’t) but they said if you did need a minimum, It would be the regular $25 voice plan. Not $30. So that’s good. They also said I might not have to pay an activation fee with an upgrade.

Fido has a $20 plan right now with 250 minutes, Unlim evenings and weekends. (Their evenings start at 7 too) Add the $30=6Gb option and you got a $50 dollar plan. Ofocurse you need the addons. SO, What addons do we need on top of that? and how much does it cost??

Are you SURE you can get the special iPhone value packs if you don’t use the new iPhone data/voice packages? I don’t think you can! Has anyone spoke to a CSR about it? The web site says “Add a Value Pack to your package” referring to the iPhone data/voice packages. I doubt they’d let you take it without their ridiculous iPhone plans.

I have read that there is a kind of “Rogers firmware” for the iPhone, which means that some options are blocked (like actual cell phones). Does anyone knows more information about that? I really hope they will let it ‘free’ so we can customize what we want on the iPhone.

I was at a local Rogers Plus Kiosk and here’s the plan they outlined for me:
    My5 Voice Plan:
    $20/month
    350 Weekday minutes
Unlimited E/W (which start at 6, not 9, for us in Saskatchewan – don’t ask me why)
    4 months unlimited local calling
    PLUS
Data plan special: 6GB for $30/month

The guy also told me that I’d need to have a plan (either data or voice) of at least $30/month in order to get an iphone for the $199 price tag. I didn’t press for details, since I plan on getting the 6GB deal.

All in all, I’m quite pleased. I could do without signing a 3-year plan, but since the plan is a pretty good one (as far as I can tell) that takes the sting off a bit.

I plan on lining up pretty damn early tomorrow morning. Wish me luck!

    Re: “rogers firmware” (Tommy?)

If you read it from my post on another thread, that’s what I heard from the 611 support guy, who I seriously doubt. As for the comment about that someone at a Rogers store “tried to get an iPhone up and running but couldn’t”… that probably better explains why I can’t get my iPhone 2G w/latest firmware to activate. My theory is that iTunes is on an activation clock, which is what’s probably what’s stopping my SIM in the iPhone 2G.

In fact, there is another comment I saw somewhere that says the explicit Apple-provided instructions to Rogers are to NOT start activating until 10am, furthering the timer theory.

    We’ll see tomorrow morning!
