Watch Canada’s Got Talent On iPhone, iPod or iPad With Citytv Video App [Free Download]

Citytv today unveiled the full episodic breakdown for the 11-week, 22-episode of Canada’s largest talent search series ‘Canada’s Got Talent’ which will begin on Sunday, March 4 on Citytv. The show will air Sundays and Mondays and the first-ever Canada’s Got Talent winner will be revealed in the live season finale on May 14. Great news is, you can watch the encore presentations of the show right on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch by downloading the free Citytv Video app available in the Canadian App Store.

In the first seven episodes of the series, celebrity judges Martin Short, Measha Brueggergosman and Stephan Moccio scour the country in search of the most talented act during an exhilarating six-city audition tour that includes Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Halifax, and Montreal. Canadian hopefuls of all ages and all talents perform in an attempt to impress the judges and advance in the competition.

Encore presentations of each week’s Sunday and Monday shows will be available on Citytv, OMNI Television, Rogers On Demand, rogersondemand.com, and Citytv.com. Viewers can also catch up on iPad, iPhone and iPod touch by downloading the free Citytv video app on iTunes Canada.

Information regarding the voting process, digital engagement, and a robust national trade campaign will be announced in the coming weeks.

Apple Warns Developers To Stop Manipulating App Store Rankings

Apple has issued an announcement on its Developer site, warning developer not to artificially manipulate their Apps rankings:

Once you build a great app, you want everyone to know about it. However, when you promote your app, you should avoid using services that advertise or guarantee top placement in App Store charts. Even if you are not personally engaged in manipulating App Store chart rankings or user reviews, employing services that do so on your behalf may result in the loss of your Apple Developer Program membership. Get helpful tips and resources on marketing your apps the right way from the App Store Resource Centre.

One such example that has been highlighted recently is a developer named Anton Sinelnikov. PocketGamer reported that he had a total of 68 apps including Temple Jump, Numbers With Friends and Tiny Birds. Once Apple got wind (although you would’ve expected this to be caught during the app approval stage) they removed the offending apps and trimmed his collection down to 9.

Natalia Luckyanova, the co-founder of Imangi Studios who developed Temple Run, said how happy she was that the offending apps had been removed from the App Store, stating:

“The app was clearly a scam that traded entirely on the popularity of Temple Run and was packaged to confuse users.”

I’m sure that there will be many more reports of copy-cat apps appearing in the App Store and I think it’s disgraceful that someone can just rip off a developer’s hard work. Hopefully Apple will be quicker to notice in the future, we don’t want to end up with Great Thief Alto or Ragdoll Booster 2.

Air Miles iPhone App Offers Points Balance and Special Offers On the Go

The popular Air Miles program has released the Canadian version of their application in the App Store and it comes with the features you’d expect such as checking your points balance and browsing rewards available to you. There’s also an interesting feature which borrows from Foursquare allowing you to check in at Air Miles sponsor locations.

Here’s the App Store description:

Here’s what you can do with the AIR MILES® App:

- Check your account balance
- Easy access to your account number (turn it sideways from the home screen!)
- View a Sponsor map near your current location. Zoom in and out to see all of the Sponsors nearby!
- Browse featured rewards

What they’re calling the “Check-In Challenge” appears to be a fun feature that allows a user access to certain rewards or offers based on their location.

- Check in at a Sponsor locations. GPS technology will find your current location and allow you to check in at a Sponsor location close by. By telling us you’re shopping at a Sponsor, we’ll show you all the relevant offers for you at that Sponsor and information about that location. Plus, watch for special bonus offers that will reward you for checking-in!

The glaring omission here is a scannable barcode for your account so that you don’t have to carry your card around with you. Cineplex does this well with their Scene points program in their app.

This app seems to revolve heavily around location-based services and check ins but is the chance for “special offers” enough to make it something you’d use regularly?

Fake Games in App Store Plague Real Developers

According to The Guardian, his name is Anton Sinelnikov and he makes fake apps–games mostly–intended to dupe iPhone and iPad owners into buying one of his titles instead of the real thing. Fake apps that are costing real independent developers lost profits, costing customers lost cash, and generating a mixed response from Apple.

Sinelnikov’s fake apps are designed to look like the real thing, at least until you purchase one. Titles run the gamut from Numbers with Friends, Tiny Birds, Angry Ninja Birds, Plants vs. Zombie, and Temple Jump. Before their removal by Apple this past week, the knock-off apps garnered negative and angry reviews from users who’d mistakenly purchased the fake titles. But in some cases Apple was slow to remove the fake apps.

Keith Shepherd, founder of Imangi Studios, creator of the popular Temple Run game, tweeted throughout the week about Temple Jump, the knock-off app created by Sinelnikov. When Apple pulled some of the earlier knock-off titles from their store, Shepherd continued to tweet, wondering when the fake app based on his game would eventually be taken down. It was, sometime early this morning, but not before an unknown number of customers were duped and not without press attention.

Still, there are some serious questions that need to be asked of Apple’s App Store policies. Surely an argument can be made that fake apps, like the kind created by Sinelnikov, which do nothing more than trick a customer out of their money, should be taken down. But what about apps like Dream Heights? Zynga’s clone of the incredibly popular Tiny Tower which debuted in Canada this past week. Is there a case to be made for games being too similar? And where do we draw the line?

Are knock-offs just part of the App Store economy and, if so, will the market take care of itself and weed out the imposters?

iBooks 2.0.1 Released, Fixes Major Bug Which Prevented TextBooks From Opening

Today, Apple has released a critical update for iBooks taking it to version 2.0.1 with fixes a major issue which prevented some iBooks Textbooks from opening in the application. Even though Apple has not specified the exact cause of this bug but reportedly the Textbooks launch issue faced by iBooks 2.0 users has now been fixed.

Below is the official statement from Apple:

We’re aware of a small number of iBooks 2 users having issues with the playback of the introduction movies when opening iBooks textbooks. It will be fixed soon in an upcoming software update.

You can download iBooks 2.0.1 for free on your iPhone, iPod or iPad via the App Store. To read the newly launched iBooks Textbooks, you need to buy them separately (U.S. iBooks store only) which can cost up to $14.99 per book.

ScoreMobile iPhone App Updated with Horizontal Stats Viewer and More

By far one of the best sports tracking apps on the iPhone is ScoreMobile, launched in 2008. Last November the app received cool gesture-based updates, and today some more features have arrived.

The 3.2 update and it brings new features such as a horizontal stats viewer, full team schedules for all leagues, and the addition of the National Lacrosse League (NLL). Included are also a variety of bug fixes too. Check out what’s new below:

We have received lots of feedback since we launched the new ScoreMobile for iPhone app, we’ve taken the best suggestions and have added even more features and fixed a variety of bugs, see below for all of the exciting additions:

• Horizontal Stats Viewer – You can now view advanced stats! Flip your device horizontally on a player card or stats screen to view deeper stats. Great for the serious fantasy sports fan!

• New League Addition: National Lacrosse League (NLL)

• Ability to hide & reorder leagues in League Selector – Simply slide the leagues you don’t want to see below “more leagues” and tap. Those leagues will be hidden from view next time you click the League Selector, pull them above the fold to view them.

• Ability to un-follow old games via Settings screen

• Full team schedules for all leagues

• Graphics for soccer – Yellow cards & Red cards etc.

• New conference (NCAA): Great West for NCAAB/NCAAWB

• Basketball starters now have position indicators in Box Scores once games have started (G,F,C)

• Minor bug fixes

Here’s how the new horizontal stats viewer works. Just go to any player and rotate your iPhone into landscape (there’s a neat reminder of the new feature). Note that orientation lock has to be off for this feature to work. Pics below:

Everpix iPhone App Now Available to Unify your Photos to the Cloud

The Everpix iPhone app has been released in the App Store. This app lets you essentially store all of your pictures automatically into their cloud storage from your Camera Roll, Facebook, Instagram, Flickr and more. The iPhone app is the companion app to the original Mac-only application (Windows version coming soon). Everpix wants to solve your issue of having pictures scattered all over the web:

You have thousands of photos spread out across various devices and web services: your computer, phone, Facebook, Flickr, Instagram, etc.

Setting up Everpix once will automatically, and continuously, import all your photos to the cloud, where they can be accessed in one place: anytime, anywhere.

According to Everpix, they want to solve the problem of having all of your pictures spread throughout the web and unify them into one place. All your pictures will be organized by date and your best photos can be curated with one tap of a button.

Time Waster of the Month – NFL Flick Quarterback [Video App Review]

I’m starting a new monthly feature called Time Waster of the Month, or TWM for short. Every month I’ll give you a look at an app that I can’t stop playing and that I feel is worth the download.

With the Super Bowl set for this Sunday, I figured the perfect way to launch this series is with a look at NFL Flick Quarterback.

This is a simple, straight forward game where you’re the quarterback, and the goal is to complete as many passes as possible without throwing incompletions, interceptions or being sacked.

There’s also a couple of skill modes where you have to throw the ball into giant trash cans, all while trying to compensate for the wind.

This is a very addictive game that also takes advantage of Game Center so you can compare your scores with those of your friends

What are some of your best scores? And who do you think is going to win this year’s Super Bowl? My money’s on New England.

King Camera is the Photography App Full of Features Made in Montreal

King Camera is an impressive little photo app now available on the app store. I had never used the application before but it’s making quite a splash lately with it’s most recent update and the fact that it is now free.

Your iPhone is capable of a number of things that aren’t immediately available in your proprietary Camera app which comes with your phone. King Camera, from Montreal developers Saycheezzzz.com, is going about the business of closing the gap between the user and all of the features the camera-in-your-pocket is capable of.

As soon as I opened it up to take the first picture, I must say, I was impressed. The app incorporates a feature that was certainly lacking for me previously. If you’re in a low-light situation and you know you’re going to use your flash for your photo you pretty much have to just snap the photo and hope it looks okay with the light. King Camera allows you to turn on your flash and leave it on while you frame up your photo. Very handy.

Before this most recent update, the application was already sporting a number of other cool features including customizable look filters, anti-shake, timer and time lapse among many, many others. The latest update, version 2.5, includes convenient Instagram sharing as well.

The French Canadian developers put together a little video sharing the news. You might get a kick out of it.

Payfirma Mobile iPhone Payment App Updated for Faster Transactions and French Support

Payfirma has updated their mobile payments app to bring a faster, improved user interface and French language support. Transactions should now be faster, with an improved receipt interface that includes location data. The slick demo within the free app gives users a good experience of how easy it is to use the app. Businesses can also get access to real-time reports of reports.
