Hey, everyone. Rorypiper, again. Got a great tutorial this week, that will show you how to change the names of your SMS tones.

Typically, when you download new SMS tones from Cydia, and apply them in Winterboard, you still have the same stock names of the tones, when you go into Settings -> Sounds -> New Text Messages. With this hack, you will be able to have those names, reflect the actual SMS tones you have applied, in Winterbaord.

You will, of course, need to have a jailbroken device, with Winterboard installed, for this to work. You will also need access to your root folder’s, via SSH, or USB. On my Mac, I have always used Filezilla for SSH, and over the past year, I have been using Disk Aid, to access the root folders, via USB. For this tutorial, I’ll be using Disc Aid. If you are new to the jailbreak community, this might be a little involved for you, but if you are familiar with the root folder heirarchy, then you should be okay.

First you need to decide what SMS tone you want to see the name of, in the Settings App. Whatever tone you pick, make sure it DOES NOT replace the 1st stock tone, “Tri-tone”. We cannot change the name of this one. Go into your root folders, and navigate to Library -> Themes. Go into the folder of your SMS tone, “Your tone” -> UiSounds. You should see one or more files in there, called “sms-received”, and they will be numbered 1 through 6 (if there are that many in the folder). We can only rename 2 through 6, so if your tone is called “sms-received1″, rename it. You will probably have to copy the tone to your computer, to rename it, then copy it back to the same folder on your device. I’m going to use my “Cat Meow SMS Tone”, and have it replace the 2nd stock tone, “Chime”.

With that sorted out, let’s go back to your desktop. We need a new folder heirarchy to go in your theme’s folder. Make a new folder and name it “Folders”. Inside that one, make another and name it “Preferences”. Inside that one, make another, and name it “en.lproj”. Inside that folder is going to be a file called “Sound.strings”. We’ll create that file, next. Your folder heirarchy should look something like this:

To make the Strings file, you just need a simple text program. Notepad on Windows, or Text Edit on Mac will do just fine. Open a new document, and type the following, including all quotations and punctuation:

“ALTERNATE_1″ = “Cat Meow”;

Of course “Cat Meow”, will be replaced with what ever your tone is called. If you’re renaming more than one tone, you can do it all in the one string file. Just replace the number. You can have up to 5. Save the file to your desktop, naming it “Sounds”. Now change the extension of the file to “.strings”. Depending on your system, you may need Administrative rights, to do this. Once that is done, move the file into the “en.lproj” folder, we created earlier.

Okay, we’re getting there! One last step, before transferring all this to your device. Navigate to the “Preferences” folder, we created earlier. We need to add an extension to this folder. Click the folder, to rename it and add “.app” to the folder name. You will probably be asked if you’re sure you want to do this. Click “Add”. Now your floder should look something like this:

Now that your new folder set is finished, we need to get it on your device. On your iPhone, in the root folder, navigate to Library -> Themes -> “your theme”, (in my case Cat Meow SMS Tone), and copy the entire folder set to this folder. You SMS tone’s folder should now have 2 folders in it: “Folders” and “UISounds”.

Respring your device. You can do this in SBSettings, if yoou have it installed, or go into Winterboard and deselect/select your SMS tone, and exit Winterboard. When your device comes back, go into Settings -> Sounds -> New Text Message, and you should see the name of your tone on the list.

That’s it! I hope I didn’t just break your brain! You can do this for all your tones, if you want. Just copy/paste that new folder set you created, and just change the name in the string file.
Since the announcement of Apple’s iPad, there have been a few new themes pop up in Cydia, emulating the look of the iPad’s UI.
Since the announcement of Apple’s iPad, there have been a few new themes pop up in Cydia, emulating the look of the iPad’s UI. This isn’t much of a stretch, as the iPad UI is very similar to that of the iPhone and iPod Touch. With some subtle changes to the wallpaper, lockscreen, and dock, you’ve got a mini iPad in your hands.

This should go without saying, but in order to change the theme of your iPhone or iPod Touch, you’ll need to have it jailbroken, with Cydia and Winterboard installed. Open Cydia, and tap the search button on the bottom. Type “iPad”. You should see a few themes on the list. Pick the one you like, but may I suggest the one I created, called “Simple iPad Theme”. It is under the ModMyi repository. Download it, then apply it in Winterboard. When your device resprings, it should look something like this:

So, that looks pretty good, right? Well, you can go one step further. Remember the hack that Dusty reviewed, called “Shrink“? We can use this to really make your device look like the iPad.

If you have Shrink installed, go into Settings -> Shrink -> Icon Size, and tap 75%. Go back one page, and tap “Respring”. Now you should have a mini iPad!

As you may have heard, a new beta version of the iPhone Dev Team’s easy jailbreak tool, redsn0w 0.9, has been released.
One of the coolest new features, is the ability to customize your boot logo, without having to do a complete restore, like with Pwnage Tool.

Your boot logo, is the first screen you see, when you start up your iPhone. The stock logo, is the Apple, of course, or if you used the Pwnage Tool, it may be the Pwnapple. To have your own boot logo, first thing you need to do, is find or create an image that you want to have as your logo. The image must be 320 X 480 pixels, in size, and in PNG format. The colour must be either in grayscale, or RGB (alpha channel). It must be no more than 100kb, in size. I use Photoshop to create mine. Feel free to get creative, just stick to these rules.

If you’re not artistically inclined, but you still want a different boot and/or recovery logo, you can just search the web, and you’ll find some already created for you. I did an image search on Google, and came up with a bunch of results.

Now you need to get your new logo on your device. Enter, redsn0w! Make sure you have the proper firmware for your device, the proper version of redsn0w for your computer, and your boot logo ready to go. I’m adding a custom boot logo to my iPhone 3GS, on an iMac, running Snow Leopard, for this demo. The steps outlined below, can be used to jailbreak your device, as well, but you make a couple of different choices along the way. Here’s a video demo of jailbreaking an iPhone 3G, with redsn0w:

Now, we’ll use pretty much the same steps as in the video, just with a couple of changes. Open up redsn0w. Click browse, and find the firmware that corresponds to your device. Click open.

If you are doing this with your iPhone 3GS, you will see a screen asking you if you have a newer 3GS, with the fiixed boot rom. Make sure you choose wisely, or you may need to do a complete factory restore, in iTunes. If you do have a newer 3GS, you are not able to install custom boot logos, at this time. If you have an iPhone 3G, you won’t see this screen.

Once redsn0w figures out what firmware it’s using, click “Next”.

Redsn0w will now download and patch the kernal.

This next part is crucial. Make sure you select the right boxes here. If you have already jailbroken your device, make sure you check the box that says “Already pwned”. If you’re jailbreaking, as well, leave this box unchecked, and check the “Install Cydia” box. Click the box next to “Custom boot logo”, and navigate to where you saved your image. Click “Open”. If you have a custom recovery logo, as well, click the box and find your image. Click next, when you’re done.

For iPhone 3G, you will be prompted to put your device in DFU mode. For iPhone 3GS, you will be rpompted to put your device in recovery mode. The steps they give for iPhone 3GS take a little over a minute or so. Don’t let go of the buttons, until you see redsn0w start the jailbreak process! There is a quicker way to enter recovery mode, than they show in redsn0w. Turn off you iPhone before connecting it, then hold the home button while plugging it in. Again, don’t let go, until redsn0w starts doing it’s thing. Putting your iPhone 3G in DFU mode is pretty straight forward, as you just follow the prompts they give you.

That’s it. Click “Finish”, and we’re all done! When your iPhone reboots, you should see you new boot logo. Here’s mine:

Every time I take a screenshot to review an iPhone App or to broadcast my iPhone’s homescreen on the blog, I always get questions about the little icons I have in my iPhone’s status bar.

You might have seen them too, and been wondering where they are from. The tweak is called Notifier and it’s available via Cydia (requires a jailbroken iPhone). Notifier will put tiny icons into the iPhone’s status bar to indicate when you have:

New email

A new chat message (ie via IM+ in my case)

Missed a call + have new voicemail

Missed a text message

Once you check up the tasks above the icons will disappear. Notifier has been available for a while now, and for those who don’t have it installed it’s a “must have” jailbroken app in my mind (along with SBSettings and 3G Unrestrictor). Are you using Notifier? How do you like it?

When I got my iPhone 3G back in July 2008, the first thing I did was jailbreak it. I did this because of all of the awesome stuff you could do which I had learned from jailbreaking/unlocking my iPhone 2G. When the iPhone 3GS came out, I chose not to jailbreak simply because most of the reasons that I did jailbreak before were now standard features on the iPhone 3GS…all except one feature.

One of the most useful jailbroken apps I enjoyed was creating blank icons on my home screen. I like to keep my home screens neat and organized with as few used home screens as possible. With blank icons, I could put apps and games on the same home screen and simply separate the two categories with blank home screen icons. Well now you can do this on a non-jailbroken iPhone/iPod Touch!

To create blank home screen icons on your iPhone/iPod Touch, simply follow the steps below:

1.) Connect to the Internet either through your Data plan or WiFi and then launch Safari.

2.) In Safari, navigate to: “http://blank.appleiphone.fr“

3.) When the web site is loaded, click on the “+” (plus) symbol on the bottom of the display

4.) Click on “Add to Home Screen”

5.) At the next screen, do not type anything and only tap “Add” in the top right corner. If “Add” is greyed out, it is because you tried typing something. Redo steps 1 – 5 above.

Try it out and let me know what you think!

Do you find that you never have enough room on your iPhone for all the movies, TV shows, and podcasts you want to carry around? Then Air Video, may be the app you’ve been looking for.

Air Video is a simple app that allows you to stream video from your computer to your iPhone, over the internet, via WiFi. It requires a free Air Video Server application to be installed on your computer. There is a Mac and a Windows version. Once the server is installed, you need to set up what folders you want to share with your iPhone. Simply right click the icon in the task bar, and select “Server Preferences”.

Then you can select as many folders as you want to share. Just click the “Add Disc Folder” button, and browse for the folders you want.

Under the “Settings” tab, you can set up your password, choose a custom listen port, and set the dimensions you want the video to stream.

You will also need to set up Remote settings, to access your files over the internet. The Air Video Server will automatically map the ports necessary to stream your video over the internet. If this isn’t working, you can manually set this up. In my case, it wouldn’t set it up automatically, but I read there have been some issues with this mapping ports through an Airport Extreme. After manually setting up the port mapping all is working fine.

Now that the server is set up, you need to download the Air Video app, for your iPhone. It is available in the App Store for $2.99, and there is a free version if you want to try it first. Open the Air Video app, and tap the “+” in the upper left, to add a server. It will automatically find any computers running the Air Video server. Just tap your computer to add it. Then you can go through the folders you set up to share, earlier, and pick a video to stream. For remote access, you need to enter a server PIN. You can do this by tapping the “+” button, then tapping “Enter Server PIN”.

Once you’ve selected the video, Air Server will determine what type of video it is (.avi, .mp4, etc). If it is anything but iPhone format, the Air Video Server with convert the video, live, while it is streaming to your device. You can adjust how the video is converted and streamed. Once you’re ready to start the stream, you have the option to start at the beginning of the video, or “Seek” for a certain point in it. If you’re restarting a video, it will ask if you want to continue from where you left off.

When you hit play, there is a bit of a delay as the video buffers, especially if you are converting on the fly, but once it gets going, the video plays quite smooth, and the quality of the video and the audio are great. If you are on a slow connection, you may experience some lag in playback.

With Bell and Telus now selling the iPhone (along with Rogers & Fido), Apple will continue to sell billions of these phones in Canada during Christmas and the holidays. Along with the influx of these new iPhone owners, online forums will get flooded with the same old questions since the first gen iPhone.

Review: Not Your Average iPhone Book, Give Your iPhone a (Jail)Break

Are you a new iPhone user? Curious about the world of jailbreaking, and also about maximizing your iPhone experience? Rather than sift through the internet and get bits and pieces of info from all over, Bogdan Nicoara aka murdaFSM (from FSMdotCOM) has taken the time to create a monster-sized, 80 page eBook for passionate iPhone owners to read.

The book, titled “Not Your Average iPhone Book, Give Your iPhone a (Jail)Break” uncovers iPhone lingo, the tools related to jailbreaking and how to use them, what to do after jailbreaking, extensive SSH-related tutorials, various telephony shortcuts, and more. For example, basic tutorials on how to add sources to Cydia and how to jailbreak using Blackra1n is covered within this book. Here’s the summary of what this book is all about:

Not Your Average iPhone Book. Give Your iPhone A (Jail)Break was written based on the hundreds of emails you sent us everyday. Our goal with this eBook is to take the most common questions and issues and explain them in a well structured step by step guide.

If you are new user, or you know your way around the iPhone you will find that this guide has no extra distractions and interruptions. Everything is about the content and the ease to learn.

I read through the entire 80 page eBook and the information I found was extremely detailed, well written, visually appealing and easy to read. The information within this eBook can be found easily on the internet. If that’s the case, then why consider buying murdaFSM’s book?

Well, for starters the information is rock solid and extremely well organized in a very easy to read eBook. No more sifting through forums or blogs that have scattered bits of info. Everything you need to know related to jailbreaking your iPhone is inside this book. Time is money! Stop wasting time and just learn the ins and outs of jailbreaking immediately, without any distractions.

How Much Does This eBook Cost? Why Should I Consider It?

murdaFSM knows just as well as anyone that jailbreaking info is freely available on the internet. He is just the first to compile it into an easy to read, well organized eBook. This book is priceless for new iPhone owners to read. If you want to truly master your iPhone, this is the book for you. For experienced iPhone users, this book will not be of interest to you–although I still learned some interesting tidbits while reading this book!

Considering it has 80 pages of well researched iPhone info on jailbreaking, the book is priced at $7US. Yes, that’s right–$7US for an extensive book on everything iPhone-related for the cost of two lattes. Spending one hour with this book will bring you up to speed on everything you need to know about jailbreaking your iPhone.

This is a must have if you’ve been curious about the prospects of owning a jailbroken iPhone. Knowledge is power, and you can read up and educate yourself before you attempt anything. I know I’m going to get this for some of my newbie iPhone friends (Jaron–I’m talking to you)! The price won’t stay at $7 for long, so get it while you can.

There’s been a lot of hoopla lately about the latest “iPhone worm” that apparently will Rickroll your iPhone. The worm makes its way to your iPhone through SSH, since the default password is “alpine” for every single install of OpenSSH. Now, before you get freaked out, you don’t have much to worry about if your iPhone is NOT jailbroken. This exploit only applies to people who…

1. Have a jailbroken iPhone
2. Have OpenSSH installed and active
3. Have the default password “alpine” still

If the above does not apply to you, breathe a sigh of relief. Actually, even if the above does apply, I would put money down that you have a higher risk of getting hit by a car than getting this Rickroll worm!

How to Change the Default SSH Password on Your iPhone

To secure your iPhone from this worm is very simple. All you have to do is CHANGE the default SSH password!

1. Download and install MobileTerminal via Cydia (MobileTerminal is basically a terminal windows just like in OSX)
2. Launch MobileTerminal. Type in the following command:

passwd

3. Enter your old password which is “alpine”. Then enter your new password (twice).
4. Done. Pretty easy, eh?

Extra Security Measures to Prevent Unauthorized SSH Access

Turn off SSH when you’re not using it. The fastest way is by installing SBSettings (if you haven’t already), then Toggle SSH. Still scared of something bad that’s going to happen? Do not jailbreak your iPhone. This ain’t rocket science!

So there you have it. This post was inspired by SaintJohnShawn via twitter! Hope this little tutorial helps you out! Relax, you’re safe now. No more crying yourself to sleep at night!

Hello. RoryPiper here again. This week I’ve got a “how-to” Winterboard theme, that will allow you to set anything you want as your 3G logo.

This will work on Mac or Windows. All you really need is some kind of image editing software, that will allow you to create and export a PNG file, with a transparent background. I’ll be using Adobe Photoshop CS4.

The image we are going to create is quite tiny. We are limited to a height of 16 pixels, and a width of 20 pixels. There are 2 images we need to create: A white logo, for when the taskbar is black, and a black logo, for when the taskbar is light blue. Alternatively, you could create a colour logo, that will look good on both light and dark backgrounds. Just make sure you can tell what it is, when it’s shrunken down so small.

Using Photoshop, create a new document, and set the image size to 20px X 16px. Make sure the background is set to “Transparent”

Find or create an image you want to use as your 3G logo. For this demonstration, I’m going to use an M&M. Red ones are my favourite. If you’re just finding an image on the net to use, don’t worry too much about the quality, as we’re shrinking it down.

To clear the background, use the eraser tool, or, if you have a solid background like this, you can use the Magic Wand to select the entire background, and hit Delete. Next, import the image into your new document and resize it to fit canvas.

This part is important. As we save this, we will start to package your new theme for Winterboard. Create a new folder on your desktop, and name it what ever you want. Mine is called M&M 3G. Within that folder, create another and name it “Bundles”. Then within the Bundles folder create another and name it “com.apple.springboard”. This is where our images will be saved. The folder cascade should look like this:

Save your first image, which will be your black logo, (or colour, in my case), as “Default_UMTS_ON.png”, in the com.apple.springboard folder. Save your second image, or your white logo, in the same place, but name it “FSO_UMTS_ON.png. The whole thing should look like this:

All you need to do now is use OpenSSH or DiskAid to get the new theme on to your iPhone (or whatever you use to access the root folders of your device). Navigate to Library -> Themes, and place your new theme there.

Now you should see your new theme in Winterboard. Open it up and, and select your new theme. Exit Winterboard, and your iPhone with re-spring. Your 3G logo should now be changed:

There you go! Another successful theme. If you have any questions, feel free post them below. If want more how-to’s, keeping checking back here every Sunday, or check out my blog Green Candy.
One of the main reasons people jailbreak their iPhones, is to get the ability to customize the iPhone OS with different themes that can be downloaded from Cydia or, if you have the capability, create yourself.

One of the main reasons people jailbreak their iPhones, is to get the ability to customize the iPhone OS with different themes that can be downloaded from Cydia or, if you have the capability, create yourself.

A “revolution” – ary new theme that was released a few weeks ago, by Justin Williams, in the Cydia Store, under the Big Boss repo, is PogoPlank. Basically, PogoPlank gives you the ability to categorize all your apps and games and have them accessible, via folders. The theme replaces all your pages of icons, with one screen, that has a “lazy susan” of folders. You just spin the wheel to get to the folder you need, tap the folder, and then you get a scrollable list of all the apps in that folder.

Unlike, “Categories”, PogoPlank doesn’t physically move your apps, but instead creates virtual folders. This makes it much easier to set up. In fact, it simply has an on/off switch, if you want to switch back to your normal home screen and pages. With, “Categories”, you would have to move all of your apps out of the folders before disabling or deleting it. Also, unlike other themes, there is no complicated process to set it up. You don’t need to add blank icons, or split the screen, or anything like that. Simply turn it on and re-spring.

Setting up your folders is easy, too. Just go to the settings page, within PogoPlank. Tap the Categories tab in the middle, on the bottom. You can use the built in folders, or create your own. To create your own, simply tap the “+” on the top right, type the name of the new folder, and tap done. Then tap the “Edit” button at the tap right, and tap the “+”. Now, just select all the apps you would like in that folder. Tap done and exit to your home screen. Your iPhone will re-spring and you will see your new folder on the wheel.

This is much more than a “theme”, as it completely replaces your UI, and is a nice change from looking at the giant sea of icons on your iPhone. It is also themeable with Winterboard, and there are already quite a few different PogoPlank Themes popping up in Cydia. You can adjust the appearence of PogoPlank, andapply the themes right in the PogoPlank app.

Here’s a video I made, of PogoPlank in action:

PogoPlank is $1.99 in the Cydia Store. If you have a ton of apps and games on your iPhone, and are looking for a new way to use your iPhone, this might be what you’re looking for.
