Over the past few years, one area that has been steadily improving in smartphones in the mobile camera technology. Back in 2007 when the original iPhone was launched, it was fitted with a camera which could barely shoot any decent shots with less megapixels, no auto-focus and no flash. Many people quoted it as “a joke” since many smartphones from market leaders of that era, Nokia and Sony Ericsson, had way better camera specs. Since then, Apple has been spec-boosting iPhone’s camera and today, iPhone 4S comes with an 8-megapixel shooter capable of 1080p video recording at 30fps. Not only this, it also sports a five-component lens that is much more sensitive to light than all its predecessors.

Photographer Lisa Bettany has an interesting post (via PetaPixel) over at Camera+ comparing the iPhone 4S camera to the previous iPhone models and a couple other cameras as well. It’s an interesting look at how much iPhone 4S camera has improved since the original iPhone.

Cydia is the reason we all jailbreak our iDevices right? Whenever we see the Cydia icon on our iPhone, iPod or iPad’s homescreen after performing a successful jailbreak, it brings a smile on our face! Developed by Jay Freeman also known as Saurik, Cydia allows us to find and install thousands of tweaks, software packages including apps, interface customizations, and system extensions which Apple wouldn’t allow us to install otherwise.

As the huge library of Cydia continues to go with all sorts of awesome tweaks being added to it every day, a YouTube user has made a pretty good demonstration video of what he believes are the top 30 Cydia tweaks of 2011. He says:

My personal top 30 Cydia tweaks of 2011. The tweaks chosen are both new and old, popular and unpopular. 30 is a big number so, I hope that most of you are able to find a tweak that you will enjoy having on your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad. The tweaks are my personal picks and we all will have our opinion. I know that there are allot of other awesome Cydia tweaks that I was unable to mention but, feel free to tell us about them in a video response or comment.

Following 30 tweaks have been demoed on video:

With the release of the first beta of iOS 4.3, it looks like Apple has dropped support for the iPhone 3G and second-generation iPod touch. As seen in the developer portal, neither the iPhone 3G or second-generation iPod touch are listed.

Currently, as of iOS 4.3 Beta 1, the following devices are supported:

iPad

iPhone 4

iPhone 3GS

iPod touch Fourth Generation

iPod touch Third Generation

Last year, some users installed iOS 4 on their iPhone 3G devices which was followed with complaints of the iPhone 3G being very slow and almost unusable. iOS 4.1 and iOS 4.2 did not do much to improve the situation. These problems were mostly due to the slow processor and less RAM in the iPhone 3G.

However, the unlisted devices may make an appearance in iOS 4.3 Beta 2, but if not, it seems that iOS 4.2 will be the latest firmware for the iPhone 3G and second-generation iPod touch.

When the iPhone first came out, it was quite an ordeal to create your own ringtones. You had to chop the song down to 30 seconds, make an ACC copy of it, delete it from your library, rename the extension to .m4r, and then add it back to you library. Then you still had to sync it back to your iPhone. This was long before there was an App Store, though.

Now, we have apps that will easily do the work for us. White-Tape recently released a great app called “Ringtone Studio – Professional Ringtone Maker“. This app allows you to create ringtones from any song (not DRM protected) in your iPhone’s library, or record your own sounds for a really custom ringtone. Editing is real easy, as you just move the sliders to the position you want in the song. You can preview your selection by tapping the “Play” button.

Hit “Save” and the app saves your new ringtone to the Ringtone Library, within the app. You then have to connect your iPhone to iTunes and go to File Sharing. Select your ringtones, and click “Save To”, and save them to your computer. Once they’re on your computer, just drag or double click them to add the to your iTunes ringtone library. It also uses “Bump”, so you can easily share ringtones with another iPhone, or you can simply email the ringtone.

Here’s the official details from the App Store:

Free ringtones! Never pay for another one again. This app pays for itself with only 1 use! It was designed to be extremely user friendly while providing many advanced options.

☆ Features:
- Record and create your own ringtones with the microphone
- Create unlimited Ringtones with music from your iPhone/iPod library
- Record up to 40 seconds!
- Bump any ringtone you have made with a friend!
- Email any of your ringtones
- View all of your created ringtones
- Precise Controls
- User friendly interface
- Assign custom tones for your contacts

** Ringtone Studio gives you the ability to create unlimited ringtones. In order to install the ringtone on your device, you must save your .m4r file through our easy File Sharing capability or email it to yourself. You then drag the file into iTunes then Sync. It is quick, easy, and we will show you how!

** This app requires iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 on iOS4 or later.
** Please use .m4a or .mp3 files from your iPod library. DRM protected .m4p files are not supported

I like this app, for being very simple and easy to use. The UI is nice and clean, and optimized for the iPhone 4′s Retina Display. The ringtones are created with a fade in/fade out, so you don’t get an abrupt, loud song blaring from your pocket. The sound of the ringtones is great quality, but obviously that depends on the quality of your original songs. What would have made this app a little better, is being able to save the ringtones right to your ringtone library on your iPhone. Then you wouldn’t have to sync to your computer, then back to your iPhone. I understand this is a limitation of Apple’s iOS SDK, but it’s still worth mentioning, as it is reminiscent of the old way we had to create ringtones.

In this article, we’re taking a look at a new tweak that was recently released in Cydia. This tweak, called “Move Lockscreen to Unlock”, does just what it says. Rather than just moving your slider to unlock the device, you can move the entire lockscreen. You can still have the unlock slider active, or you can hide it all together.

Here’s the details:

This tweak will let you unlock your iDevice by simply moving the lockscreen out of the way. You can use the Move LockScreen on Unlock settings to hide the iOS unlock slider. This is not activated by default. I advise you to test the tweak for a couple of days before hiding the slider using the corresponding setting in the settings app. There you can also turn off Move LockScreen to Unlock completely.

Tested on iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS running iOS 4. Let me know if experience any problems on iPod touches and iPads.

Not compatible with the iOS passcode lock (e.g. needed to connect to some Exchange servers). Use ‘Exchange Unlock’ or similar to disable the passcode lock.

Move Lockscreen to unlock is available in Cydia now, for $0.99.

It is compatible with LockInfo, (this is what I’m using in the screenshot above), but not sure about other lock screen widgets, like SmartScreen or Cydgets. if you have tried it out and had success or issues, let us know!

With the release of the GM seed of iOS 4.2, some features have been working great while others have been failing. The most notable feature that is not working for many is AirPrint, as detailed earlier this week.

Now, the next major iOS 4.2 feature to not work seems to be AirPlay but only for the iPhone 3G. If true, this will be a shame for iPhone 3G owners.

iPhone 3G users have been hit with a string of unfortunate issues recently from slow device performance on the iOS 4.x releases and even feature cuts such as Game Center. And now AirPlay gets cut too?!

9to5Mac: Top - iPhone 3G; Bottom - iPhone 4

Amazingly, 9to5Mac did some research and found that the iPhone 3G did have AirPlay support in earlier iOS 4.2 beta builds. In other words, AirPlay was working fine until the iOS 4.2 GM release. The issue becomes even bigger when on Apple’s website, it states that AirPlay will work on all iOS 4 devices. So what gives?

It is a mystery as to why AirPlay seems to have been removed from the iPhone 3G, but going back a bit, Apple did remove Game Center due to “performance issues”. However, considering the claim about AirPlay on Apple’s website, that excuse can’t be used.

The other possibility is that the iOS 4.2 GM seed is buggy and causing the problem. Like the recent AirPrint issues, this could simply be a problem with the GM seed that may be corrected with the full public iOS 4.2 release.

Then again, maybe Apple is just trying to get iPhone 3G users to upgrade their device?

[9to5Mac]

When iPhone 3G users installed iOS 4.0, the result was an extreme slow down in performance. Simple tasks such as typing or just flicking through home screens caused major lags and a horrible user experience.

Upon release of iOS 4.1, iPhone 3G performance was improved but it was still not close to the pre-iOS 4.0 days.

With the impending launch of iOS 4.2 this month, TiPB decided to install the iOS 4.2 GM seed onto an iPhone 3G to see if performance had improved.

As seen in the associated video, iPhone 3G performance with iOS 4.2 seems to be dramatically improved! Apple has done all that they can to make the slower iPhone 3G really shine with iOS 4.2.

Almost all tasks run faster on iOS 4.2 such as scrolling, typing, and flicking through lists or home screens. For users with an iPhone 3G, iOS 4.2 is the firmware you’ve been waiting for!

Hey everyone, RoryPiper here. Usualy, when I post something on this great site, I’ve got a cool how to, for making a theme, a review of some new case or iPhone related product, or some other jailbreak-type news. This week it is all about shameless self-promotion. With Gary’s permission, or course. ;P

Some of you hardcore jailbreakers out there may remember a blog for jailbreaking iPhone OS 1.1.x, called www.iJailbreak.com. It was run by a couple of the Chronic Dev Team Members. Well, myself, and Dusty, the founder of iEvolution.ca, decided to start up a site dedicated to jailbreaking. We needed a strong, easy to remember URL, and stumbled upon www.iJailbreak.com. It hadn’t been used in a while, so we contacted the owners and were able to acquire the URL.

The site has been completely redesigned, and is live! We feature tonnes of Cydia app reviews, jailbreak how-to’s, and more. Hope you all come check us out! - rorypiper

Before you ask, this is for the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch (second generation) ONLY. More importantly: this update is NOT for ultrasn0w unlockers!

I know there are a lot of you waiting for this. We still sign 3 year contracts in Canada so it’s fair to be using an iPhone 3G which is now in its third year. The Windows download is at the bottom of our source links.

Those of you with an iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4G, iPad or even a new Apple TV, your wait is almost over
