iOS 5.1 Beta 3 Includes Return Of 3G Toggle Switch

As news emerges from the latest iOS 5 Developer Beta release, MacRumors is reporting on the return of the “Enable 3G” switch (it’s currently absent from the 4S) which allows users to chose between the faster 3G network or the EDGE network using less battery power.

iPhone 4S users will note that this switch is currently missing from their devices, a decision never explained by Apple but thought to be due to Siri, whose helpful, while sassy, voice-enabled assistance does not function well on the EDGE network. A boost in battery life is expected in the update so it’s likely that the return of the switch is meant for battery improvement and does not indicate that Siri’s performance will increase on EDGE.

Apple Releases iOS 5.1 Beta to Developers

Apple offered free shipping today only on all products purchased from Apple.ca as part of Cyber Monday. They weren’t finished with giving though as now iOS 5.1 beta is now available to developers. Build number 9B5117b comes in at an 800MB download for the iPhone 4S.

Apple previously noted they are still working on crushing bugs linked to battery in iOS 5. It’ll be interesting to see what major differences will exist with this new beta.

Some release notes (thanks anonymous):

You must use iTunes 10.5 or later to install iOS 5.1 beta on your devices. iOS 5.1 beta is not available via over the air software update.
Be sure to backup your devices using iTunes 10.5 or later or through iCloud backup prior to installing iOS 5.1 beta. After installing iOS 5.1 beta, you can restore your device using either iTunes 10.5 or later or through your iCloud backup.
Devices updated to iOS 5.1 beta can not be restored to earlier versions of iOS. Devices will be able to upgrade to future beta releases and the final iOS 5.1 software.

[Update] Apple Releases iOS 5 Beta 7 To Developers

Update 1: Release notes:

iOS 5 beta 7 can be installed using over the air software update from devices that have iOS 5 beta 5 or later installed. Over the air software update can be initiated by choosing General > Software Update in Settings.

Be sure to backup your devices using iTunes 10.5 beta 7 or through iCloud backup prior to installing iOS 5 beta 7. After installing iOS 5 beta 7, you can restore your device using either iTunes 10.5 beta 7 or through your iCloud backup.

When updating iPhone 3GS or iPod touch (3rd generation) from Beta 6 to Beta 7 using iTunes, you must first follow the instructions in the Release Notes.

This version of iOS is intended only for installation on development devices registered with Apple’s Developer Program. Attempting to install this version of iOS in an unauthorized manner could put your device in an unusable state, which could necessitate an out of warranty repair.

Devices updated to iOS 5 beta can not be restored to earlier versions of iOS. Devices will be able to upgrade to future beta releases and the final iOS 5 software.

Xcode 4.2 Developer Preview cannot be used to submit apps to the iOS or Mac App Store. Continue to use the publicly released version of Xcode to compile and submit apps to the App Stores.

A pre-release version of Apple TV Software is being provided in order to test AirPlay functionality with your iOS 5 apps.

This evening Apple released the seventh beta, build 9a5313e, of iOS 5 to developers. Alongside the iOS beta release, Apple also released Beta 7 of iTunes 10.5.

The last iOS 5 release, Beta 6, was pushed out on August 19 2011, putting 12 days between Beta 6 and Beta 7.

iOS 5 Beta 5 however was released on August 6 2011, putting 13 days between Beta 5 and Beta 6 and iOS 5 Beta 4 was released July 22 2011, putting 15 days between Beta 4 and Beta 5.

The Beta update is available now in the iOS Dev Center or via Over The Air update on an iOS device with a previously installed iOS 5 beta.

With the release of iOS 5 Beta 4 before the weekend, Apple delivered a much improved iOS 5 beta (from a performance perspective) and a few subtle updates and tweaks. For those keeping track, the following list details only what is new in iOS 5 Beta 4.

Features/Tweaks

One of the major new updates in Beta 4 is the ability to download firmware updates over-the-air or OTA. Beta 4 enabled this feature and users could update their devices to iOS Beta 4 using WiFi or 3G

A little love arrived for Windows users who now have the ability to use Wi-Fi sync. This features removes the need to sync iTunes content via the dock connector cable

As usual, iMessage Beta 1 users are unable to communicate with iMessage Beta 2 or later users.

iCloud has a new setting to toggle to sync documents and data

Maps has a new popup message stating that turning on Wi-Fi improves location accuracy

In the Notification Center, the next-day Calendar events are italicized and show “Tomorrow”

Bugs

In Mail, when forwarding a message with attachments included does not attach the file and the message compose screen does not change from â€œLoadingâ€¦.â€

In Personal Hotspot, a bug prevents the iPhone 4 device from joining personal hotspot even if it is on due to a non functional WiFi tethering on these devices.

This morning Apple released iOS 4.3.4 to patch the PDF exploit used in the jailbreak tool JailbreakMe.com.

iOS 4.3.4 Software Update

Fixes security vulnerability associated with viewing malicious PDF files.

The update is available for the iPhone 3GS/4, third/fourth-generation iPod touch, and all iPad models.

iOS 5 Beta 3: Enhanced Location Controls, Voice Roaming & Other Updates

As first noted byÂ It’s All Tech,Â iOS 5 Beta 3, released earlier today, has introduced a number of updates.

Some of the highlights of the new beta are:

Location Services can now be enabled/disabled from the initial setup screen

You can now create a new “Mailbox” from within the Mail app

You can disable/enable system processes use location services

All video content previously in the iPod app has been moved to the “Videos” app

Music has a “Store” button that brings you to the iTunes Store

iOS 5 Speeds Up Home Screen Web Apps

Some iOS developers have confirmed that iOS 5, Apple’s major upcoming iDevice firmware update, reportedly solves some performance issues with Home Screen web apps.

The confirmation reveals that Web.app, used for web apps running outside of Safari, has the same “dynamic-codesigning” privilege as Safari and can further use the Nitro JavaScript engine.

However, regular apps that require a web view apparently do not benefit from the performance boost.

The performance issues started amid complaints from developers creating HTML5 apps and others that wanted their web links reached from outside Safari.

High Quality YouTube Playback Over 3G Coming In iOS 5?

Earlier this week reports of FaceTime over 3G in iOS 5 popped up. Currently, FaceTime can only be officially used over WiFi, so 3G would be a major new feature update.

Continuing to expand the use of 3G, it seems that YouTube on iOS 5 will now stream high quality video over 3G. Again, like FaceTime, you can only get high quality video over YouTube if you are on WiFi.

High Quality YouTube video over 3G is available on internal builds of iOS 5, much like FaceTime over 3G

Is this Apple’s way of stickin’ it to the carriers?

iOS 5 To Broadcast Album/Track/Artist Data To Bluetooth Audio Devices

As reported by 9To5Mac, it seems that a new feature of iOS 5 has been revealed! Using iOS 5, an iOS device streaming music can now reportedly transmit artist, track, and album information over Bluetooth to an audio receiver.

In other words, if you have a car with Bluetooth capabilities and are streaming music to the car sound system, the display on the sound system will have the song track name, artist name, and album name (that is, if you updated the song information).

Apple Is Ready For FaceTime Over 3G, But Are The Carriers?

According to a few photos we received today, it seems that Apple may be ready to go with FaceTime over 3G. However, it may be the carriers who make the final decision.

With the iOS 5 beta, photos reveal a new pop-up that prompts users to turn on cellular data to use FaceTime.

FaceTime Unavailable: Turn on cellular data or use Wi-Fi to use FaceTime.

Once cellular data is activated however, we get the familiar error:

FaceTime Failed: Connect to a Wi-Fi network to use FaceTime.

When FaceTime first launched, the video calling feature was limited to WiFi on iOS devices. This limitation severely reduced the usefulness of FaceTime, as WiFi is not as readily available as the mobile carrier networks.

Based on the first photo above, it does seem that Apple is ready to enable FaceTime over 3G or WiFi, but ultimately the carriers must decide to enable the functionality as FaceTime would deliver a heavy load of data to the mobile carrier networks.

Of course if FaceTime over 3G is enabled, you’ll definitely want the Canadian mobile carrier’s famous 6GB data plan, as anything less probably wouldn’t cut it.
