Hey all!

Today’s discussion will be branched into three categories: (be ready to do some reading)

The First Generation iPhone with phone plans

The iPhone 3G

A SENA Case for iPhone 3G review

First Generation iPhone

As many of you know, the iPhone 3G was released in Canada on July 11th, 2008. As thousands of people lined up everywhere to get the new iPhone 3G, just as many did not opt for the new 3G and instead continued on with their first generation iPhones.

Unlike the iPhone 3G, the first generation iPhone cannot be purchased at a Rogers or Fido outlet. The first generation iPhone can be bought on eBay or Craigs List or wherever you can buy non-Canadian phones/grey market phones and fortunately the first gen can be used with either a Rogers or Fido plan.

As of about two weeks prior to July 11th, 2008, the first generation iPhone was essentially banned from all Rogers/Fido outlets. What these means for clients and potential customers of Rogers/Fido is that you cannot activate a first generation iPhone. More specifically, the Rogers/Fido rep cannot touch the first generation iPhone without risk. So, how do you activate your first generation iPhone?

The best way to do this is simply to activate a SIM card. Go to your local Rogers/Fido and simply ask to start a yearly contract (for the best plans) and get a new phone (free phone on a 3 year contract). Now you have an activated SIM card and a spare phone (sell it or store it). From here, you will move your new SIM card from the new Rogers phone into your first generation iPhone. Now you have voice service. (If you already have a Rogers account, just move your SIM card into the iPhone)

If you are looking for add-ons such as voicemail, caller display, and data, things can become slightly more complex. At this time, you can add any add-on service such as regular Voicemail, caller display and texting to the first generation iPhone with any firmware and it will work fine. However, if you want the new Visual Voicemail, this can work on the first generation iPhone but you must have the new 2.0 firmware installed.

If you are looking to add data, this is where things get tough. While most of the data plans from Rogers work with the first generation iPhone, there have been mixed reviews about the new $30 6GB promo data plan working on the first gens. So, I would advise that until more proof is revealed, that if you need data on your first gen iPhone, stick with any data plan that is NOT the $30 6GB plan (see the windows mobile/blackberry data plan area of Rogers.com).

So, now you have working voice service, data service and add-ons.

Good Luck!

iPhone 3G

To begin, if you are currently in possession of the iPhone 3G, congratulations on your hard work and dedication in getting this device. As many know by now, it was (and continues to be) difficult to snag one of these phones and if you managed to get one, well done!

First, I want to clarify hardware upgrades on the iPhone 3G with Rogers.

If you are an existing customer with a consumer account and have had your phone for over one year (or it has been one year since your last upgrade or since the beginning of your account) you are eligible to upgrade. If you are a corporate customer and you have had your phone for over one year or two years (depending on your account), you too will be eligible.

In most cases, for either customer type, the iPhone will run you $199 for the 8GB or $299 for the 16GB, however, this is dependent on your account tenure and voice plan price amount and if you want to know for sure, either call Rogers or head to your local Rogers store to find out.

In order to get the phone at the above promo pricing (for either upgrades or new accounts), you must satisfy two things:

You must sign or resign a 3 year contract

You must have a monthly service fee for the voice plan being greater than $30. (Not $30 on the dollar, MORE than $30….so $30.01 or higher and if you downgrade ANYTIME during your contract length to a plan that is $30 or LESS, you will be charged a $50 downgrade fee and this fee only applies to iPhone accounts)

The definition of a monthly service fee is:

A) The voice plan ($30.01+ mega time plan)

B) A voice plan with a data plan ($30.01+ voice plan, with $30 data plan = $55 total but the voice plan is over $30)

If you do not want to have a higher than $30 plan, you can still get the iPhone, except you pay $249/$349 for the 8GB/16GB models (a $50 increase on both models).

As far as which plans can you choose with Rogers? Any plan, so long as it meets the above requirements. Also, for those people wondering about family plans, you can now both upgrade and activate new lines on Family Plans (this was not possible earlier this past week).

For those who want JUST a voice plan (so to get promo pricing, it has to be higher than $30.01) you can do this but remember that you will be charged at $0.05/kb for data usage without a data plan. If that fact does not scare you, be sure to contact Rogers and have them block goam.com, internet.com and anything else related to data and internet usage. What this means is you will only have access to the internet with WiFi (wireless internet) and if you are not in WiFi 24 hours/day, you essentially will have a less than complete iPhone 3G experience.

I realize that this does not answer every question, which is why I refer to you check out the iphoneincanada.ca forums page. Failing that, you can post here on this blog and failing that, you can Private Message me via the forums, but considering you need to get to the forums in order to message me, try the forum search function first, kay? Thx.

Sena iPhone 3G Ultra Slim Pouch Review

I recently picked up yet another case for my iPhone 3G (many of you may have read my review of the Belkin case) and this time it is from Sena.

I have been a long time user of Sena cases. I have had them for Blackberries, basic phones, the first generation iPhone, and now the iPhone 3G. The Sena case that I had for the first generation iPhone was Senas’ Elega line, which is essentially the larger version of their ultra slim line. In any case, I wanted to try the slim case this time around and in typical Sena fashion, it did not disappoint.

First off, this case is really really slim…I mean like really slim. Its like a package of Trident gum…SLIM. When I put my iPhone 3G into this case and close my eyes, I forget the case is even there…it’s THAT slim. And because of this slimness, the case REALLY grips onto the iPhone tightly.

The case itself is made of fine Napa leather so it feels very nice in the hand. The slim pouch line also only comes in this alligator skin texture (for lack of a better word) and hugs the iPhone 3G very tightly. Inside the case, the walls are lined with velvet and gives your iPhone 3G a nice snug and soft place to rest. On the front you also have the SENA logo (almost completely hidden and actually looks good) and along the back there is nothing but the alligator skin texture (no clip). Along the bottom of the case, on both sides, are six tiny cut out holes for the speaker and mic (three holes per side per speaker/mic).

So, what is not so good about this case you ask? Only one thing; its hard to take the iPhone out of the case (requires a solid push at the bottom). This small issue could be exclusive to me because I choose to still have the original plastic on the front of my iPhone 3G (pending the invisible shield arrival) and I can see where that plastic can cause the iPhone to not slide in/out of the case so easily. However, once you do get it half way out (see the video on Senas website) it almost feels as if the phone COULD fall and this is something I really do not like.

On a lighter note, the difficulties could also be from the fact that it’s a new case and it takes some time to stretch it out, but in a way, I am happy that it is hard to take it out because to me, that means my iPhone 3G will not just accidentally fall out of the case.

Currently, this case type comes in 10 different colors and runs for $29.99 from the Sena Online Store. A solid price for a really solid and SLIM case. SLIM.

Well folks, that will just about do it. No give-away today however I have something in works coming up, so stay tuned!

The Rogers iPhone 3G data/voice plan announcement internet blowback is still going strong. If you thought Canadians were indignant yesterday, well that anger is still chugging along. Internet forums are amuck with endless tirades and rants from large numbers of Canadians now strongly considering a boycott of the iPhone 3G.

Enter Stage Left: www.RuinediPhone.com

One particular website that caught my attention immediately was www.f***yourogers.com. The site has been changed to a more appropriate name for media coverage, www.ruinediphone.com. James Hallen is the creator of the website and his goal is to collect 10,000 signatures (8700 at the time of this writing this post–almost there!), which along with 1000′s of comments will be printed and delivered to Rogers HQ on July 11th.

It is astonishing that in roughly 48 hours the www.ruinediphone.com has made it onto the front page of Digg (multiple times actually), plus it’s been peppered into almost every single internet forum that’s iPhone related (including the iPhoneinCanada.ca Forums – stop lurking, and click here to register! Voice your opinion today!). Here is a snipped of James’ open letter to Steve Jobs:

To our great disappointment, Rogers Communications Inc. has announced VERY unfair rates in comparison to AT&T in the United States and to other authorized wireless service providers around the world. As a result, a consumer movement was born yesterday (June 27th) in protest against these rates.

Nearly 6,000 people have signed an online petition to help make a difference and the list is growing rapidly. In the last 48 hours, the website has had 40,000 unique visitors from around the world supporting Canadian consumers. There are a vast number of Canadians that would take the opportunity to buy an iPhone at $199CAD but these new plans have put it out of reach for many.

Want to express your feelings? Sign the petition here!

The Major Media Outlet Snowball is Starting…

So far, only a handful of major media outlets are picking up on the iPhone 3G outrage. The Globe and Mail’s Report on Business has the following quote in this article that sums up our wireless industry in a nutshell:

Rogers has decided to charge iPhone users a premium to use the coveted devices, said Info-Tech Research Group senior analyst Michelle Warren.

“These rates are just another indicator that Canadian cellphone rates are really high and that essentially the carriers feel like they can charge whatever they like,” she said. “Rates should be going down, they shouldn’t be going up, and these are expensive rates.”

But the single largest US media coverage so far has come from CNET’s assessment of the current Rogers iPhone 3G PR nightmare:

In its press release, Rogers does provide a convenient chart to gauge your data usage–apparently, 2G amounts to 16,000 Web pages (who knew?)–but we don’t approve of such an arrangement at all. The iPhone’s Web browser is one of its top attractions, particularly on a 3G network, and asking users to limit their data certainly isn’t putting the “Internet in your pocket.” Rogers is offering unlimited Wi-Fi access at all Rogers and Fido hotspots, but that in itself is limiting if you have to be in one place.

What’s more, the data restrictions aren’t the half of it. While AT&T’s cheapest iPhone 3G service plan ($69 per month) includes 450 anytime minutes, the cheapest Rogers plan (the one with 400MB of data) only gets 150 anytime minutes. Ouch. Similarly Rogers’ most expensive plan includes only 800 anytime minutes while AT&T’s priciest plan ($129 per month) includes unlimited anytime minutes. Double ouch.

Come on, Rogers, you have to give your customers a little more. Especially when your contracts run three years.

I can only see the negative press to continue as the days go on. However, Rogers owns a majority of news outlets in this country, so it would be hard pressed to hear negative publicity coming from within. The Globe and Mail is owned by Bell so expect a few more jabs coming our way.

You can take a stand against these outrageous iPhone 3G voice/data prices by speaking with not your mind–but your wallet. At the end of the day, money talks and it will be interesting to see what the quarterly financial reports will be like the next quarter. Shareholders definitely have a stronger voice than we do, ya know!

I’ve never really asked this on the blog yet, but were you intending on buying the iPhone 3G, but changed your mind after hearing about the voice/data plans? Anyone out there still going to take the plunge regardless of price? Let’s hear your thoughts in the comments!

*note: first time comments will be held in moderation, so please be patient. Thanks!**

Mention of Rogers iPhone 3G Voice/Data Plans Will Result in a Verbal Backlash

Yikes. That’s the first thing that comes to my mind after reading up on the endless frustrated rants of Canadians after Rogers iPhone 3G voice/data plans were revealed. There’s a saying that history repeats itself, and in this case it chimes true again and again.

Rogers over the years has had a notorious reputation as the “hated” mobile carrier in Canada. Why you ask? Well, for starters their pricing plans have never been “competitive” (why would they need to be when you have a monopology on GSM?!). On top of that, you have a team of poorly trained customer service reps that tell you one thing, then do another (I have first hand experience with this when I found out my 1 year contract was in fact THREE. I called in to Rogers to inquire, and they told me I had signed a 3 year contract. Umm…no, I don’t think I’ve ever done anything of the kind. They then have the nerve to tell me that in order to change my 3 year contract to a 1 year contract, I’d have to pay the $400 early cancellation charge! I DID NOT SIGN 3 YEARS, yet they would not listen to me. That is unacceptable customer service and bad business practice. Okay, rant ends here.)

Well, yesterday’s iPhone 3G voice/data plans did not impress ANYONE. I have yet to read a positive comment on the internet, including the iPhoneinCanada.ca Forums. People right now are just livid and incensed about the plans, even the people who have been patiently waiting over a year for the iPhone’s release in Canada. How can Rogers get away with this?

What Rogers Should’ve Done to Really Hook Canadian iPhone 3G Fans

Let’s imagine another scenario. Say the iPhone 3G voice/data plans were something similar to the following:
300 daytime minutes
6pm unlimited evenings/weekends
Caller ID/Voicemail
2GB data
$60

This plan, created out of thin air sounds much better than $60 for 150 daytime minutes and 400MB of data! The iPhone is the most hyped device around then entire world at the moment–and it’s clear that Rogers wants to take full advantage of this. If a decent voice/data plan was introduced, I guarantee Rogers would steal hundreds if not thousands of Bell and Telus customers making the switch. Yet, they have decided to the road WAY less traveled (I think it’s a chip trail) with expensive, price-gouging plans that offer no value. Don’t forget to add the “value packs” of either $15 or $20 to drive the price up even more.

Flaws in the Rogers iPhone 3G Voice/Data Plans (or, things that are making Canadians angry)

1. 150 daytime minutes for $60. I hope this isn’t an early April Fool’s joke. That equates to 7.5 minutes of talktime during the day in a month (subtracting free weekends). Do you talk more than 7.5 minutes in a day? If you go over these minutes, it’s $0.35 extra PER minute!

2. $15/$20 value packs. Gee, I remember when voicemail and caller ID could be bundled for like $5 or so…now we have to pay $15 or $20 EXTRA? Yeah, I understand that you get 2500 text messages–but who really sends 83 text messages per day?! Also, announcing that 2500 call forwarding minutes are included is not a bonus. Honestly, how many people still use call forwarding?

Without the $20 value pack, your evenings will start at 6PM. If you don’t get the $20 value pack, your free evenings start at 9PM. Yes, that’s right…9PM (Fido’s evenings start at 7pm)! Some people start getting ready for bed at 9PM, yet Rogers expects you to have free calling after that. Obviously customers will not be able to resist waiting until 9PM to call or answer their iPhones–that means $0.35/minute overage charges baby!

3. Fido customers have the upper hand. If you buy an iPhone 3G from Fido, and opt for the $20 value pack you are already one step up on your confused father, Rogers. Fido customers will get 5PM early evenings, versus 6PM for Rogers customers. On top of that, Fido users will have billing by the second (trust me, they will need this more than ever before!), which Rogers will not.

Also, the Fido website states that their users will be rewarded FidoDollars for wireless data usage. So does that mean the more wireless data you use, the more FidoDollars you will collect? Rogers customers have no such reward system in place. Not fair.

4. Useless added facts to confuse customers. The plans state that “unlimited WiFi at Rogers/Fido outlets will be included”. Whoop-dee-do. Free WiFi is pretty much available at any coffee shop, depending on where you live. Why would Rogers/Fido customers want to use WiFi outside a Fido/Rogers outlet? They shouldn’t have to, as a complete and reasonable data plan would be sufficient enough!

Did you notice the detailed explanation of “what you get” with the new data plans? Rogers decided to throw in some big numbers, hoping they’d confuse the average customer. This is what I’m talking about…400 MB, up to 200,000 text emails or 3,100 web pages or 1,360 photo attachments. Of course reading these stats will make it seem impressive, but every user is different.

5. Data plan overage charges. According to Rogers, if you go over your allotted data usage you will be charged the following: 50¢ per MB for the first 60 MB, 3¢ per MB thereafter. For iPhone 3G users not keeping close tabs on their data usage, going over will cost you an arm and a leg. More money for Rogers. Ka-ching! Hmm…maybe my first generation iPhone isn’t looking too shabby at the moment!

I honestly believe Rogers underestimated that Apple buyers and iPhone 3G techies are very picky when it comes to their purchases. They can easily see past the fact that Rogers is trying to take full advantage of consumers with their iPhone 3G pricing plans. Could Rogers possibly adjust these plans by July 11th? It is possible. Maybe this announcement is just to “test the waters” to see what Canadians feel about these plans. If that’s the case, then it’s another case of what scientists call “EPIC FAIL”.

People are going ballistic over the net right about the speculation of Rogers iPhone 3G data plans. Are they going to match AT&T’s pricing plans? Is the leaked $30 unlimited data plan really true? We will soon find out in exacty 21 days (iPhone 3G preview here). Here are some more interesting notes for you to digest, which will ultimately help you come to the conclusion that…

a) These endless rumors about Rogers iPhone 3G data plans will never die until we find out officially from Rogers…

b) Canadians are tired of being held ransom by a handful of Canadian wireless carriers having way too much fun charging whatever they want–oligopolies are awesome!

We’ve received information regarding Rogers iPhone 3G data plans via the iPhoneinCanada.ca Forums (thanks X1):

I received a phonebook-sized book of “customer scenarios” today for training. Upon a look on the plans, it would SEEM the $30/$45 is true. All of the total MSF (monthly service fees) seemed to be a voiceplan + either the $30 or $45 dollar option.

What I mean here is that the scenarios did not explicity label “$40 voice plans” and “$30 iphone data plan” for “$70/month”. Instead, it was just “$70/month”. Here were the prices listed for plans:

“$60, $65, $70, $75, $80, $85″.

What I gather from this is as long as you have atleast a $30 voice plan, you then pick your poison of either $30 or $45 iphone data, and you’re golden.

So what this essentially means is that you’re looking at for the iPhone 3G, cost wise at the very least is (thanks mike):

$30.00 data
$30.00 voice plan
$15.00 smartphone value pack (or $11 if you only need 125 text messages)
$ 6.95 SAF
$ 0.50 911
———————–
$82.45 + taxes minimum,

or $984.40/year, or $2968.20 over 3 years (plus the cost of your $199 or $299 iPhone 3G–don’t forget the GST/PST!). That’s a lot more than what people are paying now. But unlimited data would be very tempting…24/7 of non-stop internet…*drool*

i.Fido recently provided updated information regarding the plans he leaked plus sources:

I got yet another confirmation today from yet another insider that this price plan information “leaked” to me is intentionally 100% correct. In fact, it may be purposely leaked to me to drive up hype and/or whatever other reasons unknown. The main source has never been wrong, ever. I have full confidence. But as always, Rogers execs still have time to change their minds so let’s just wait. Nothing is in stone until officially advertised. PERIOD.

I also received an email from a user who spoke with a Rogers CSR. This CSR mentioned the iPhone 3G will be selling for $700, without a contract. Umm…if that’s true…$700 for an unsubsized iPhone 3G?! I’d be better off spending a couple hundred more and buying a refurbished Macbook!

On the lighter side of things, commentor Unknown over at Gizmodo posted this response to an article related to Rogers 3 year contracts, which made me giggle like a little school girl:

THREE years? You can get a shorter sentence than that for killing someone! No way I will buy an iPhone with a contract.

Could New Blackberry Plans Indicate Upcoming iPhone 3G Plans?

To add even more confusion to the mix, Crackberry.com reports the following new Blackberry prices, according to a recent Rogers slideshow presentation:

Non-flex plan: $15 for 2MB (the only response to this is just WTF), $25 for 4MB, $30 for 300MB, $60 for 1GB, $80 for 3GB, and $100 for 6GB

Flex plan: $50 for 500MB, $65 for 1GB, $85 for 3GB, and $100 for 5GB

Can you imagine the fallout if the iPhone 3G $30 unlimited data plan rumor comes true? If I were a RIM executive I would be majorly upset at Rogers. iPhone vs Blackberry wars anyone?

Many iPhoneinCanada.ca readers have commented on this blog and in the iPhoneinCanada.ca Forums (yes, that’s right they are now BACK! Click here to register for the forums!!) that select Rogers Wireless locations are accepting deposits for iPhone 3G pre-orders. Deposits have varied in range from $50-100 with the guarantee that you will get your iPhone 3G the day of the launch!

Fellow reader Rob emailed the following:

“You may be interested to know that at least one Rogers Wireless dealer in Edmonton is accepting a $50.00 deposit for any of the three iPhone models (8GB Black, 16GB Black & 16GB White). This deposit supposedly guarantees you your selected model within 3 -4 days of launch. I paid this deposit today for a 16GB White iPhone. I was also told that if I had not been eligible for a hardware upgrade, then I would not have been able to pay the deposit because they werenot certain if they would also be selling the iPhone outright without subsidy. They also mentioned that they had been expecting information on the wireless
plans for iPhone yesterday (Wednesday) and were surprised that they hadn’t been given this information yet. They said they were getting about 30 or so inquiries per day, but only one or two deposits per day because most people were waiting to hear about the plans.”

So if you’re eager to jump onto the iPhone 3G train, go down to your local Rogers Wireless inquire within. This Everything Rogers/Fido iPhone 3G thread mentions that these “pre orders” are up to the discretion of store managers, authorized by the big honchos back East.

Summary of an Exciting Week of iPhone 3G News!

Let’s recap what’s happened this week! After hearing all the juicy details about the iPhone 3G from the 2008 WWDC from Steve Jobs and Co., we have learned that Rogers Wireless and Fido will be selling the iPhone 3G.

In terms of pricing, Rogers has released that iPhone 3G units will be selling for $199 for the 8GB and $299 for the 16GB models, on a 3 year contract term. Fido just recently confirmed these same numbers too (not surprisingly!).

As for specific voice and data plans, if Rogers emulates AT&T in the USA, expect to pay $39/month for voice and $30 for 3G data. That equals roughly $70/month for your lovely iPhone 3G, plus taxes and the ever-so-lovely System Access Fee. Over three years, your iPhone at AT&T rates will cost you…(in BC at least)…

$199 (8GB) x 1.13 (GST/PST in BC) = $224.87

Voice/Data: $70 + 6.95 SAF + 1.13% = $86.95

$86.95 x 36 months = $3130.20 + $224.87 = $3355.07

So hypothetically speaking, an 8GB iPhone 3G from Rogers or Fido, based on AT&T USA’s pricing would work out to almost $3400CDN after 3 years, or about $94/month. What can you buy with $3400? Given that fuel and cost of living is on the rise, some people might not have have the luxury of spending almost $100/month on a cellphone! I know that is not a lot of money to some of you guys, but it is a substantial amount to pay for the iPhone 3G. Is it worth it? Only you can decide!

Keep in mind that Apple released the iPhone 3G roughly one year after the launch of the first generation iPhone. How many new generations will be released over the term of a 3 year contract? We don’t have the answer to that question, but it’s something to consider.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the new iPhone 3G and would gladly pay full price for it (like I did with my current 8GB iPhone), but I am not a big fan of 3 year contracts that companies are using to lock us into their pricey plans. With new wireless competition on the horizon, I would be hesitant to sign away for 3 years right now. Food for thought!

Could this ad be foreshadowing your future iPhone 3G monthly bill? LOL

Winner of the Case-Mate Leather Case and Holster Contest

Remember my contest for the free Case-Mate case/holster? I couldn’t decide the winner from the comments so I had my friend Greg from BCMblog.com decide for me. Out of all the comments the one that stuck the most was…

Why do I need this Case-Mate signature Leather Case?

Quite simple actually.

I need a very nice and secluded place to store my iPhone (my silly co-workers will think its a blackberry under my shirt, hehehehe) so that when I am being briefed on the new iPhone plans/release dates for Rogers, I can secretly slide it out of the case and post the secret infos on iphoneincanada.ca/forums!!!

Congrats to X1Zero for his interesting comment! You are a winner! You know the drill, email me your info!
