Apple Researching Digital Handshakes for Sharing Data Between Devices

Apple is looking to get into the business of unique device identification, Patently Apple reports, filing a patent that details plans for a “digital handshake” capable of transferring data between nearby devices. The patent application, published by the US Patent & Trademark Office today, preposes using a camera that could identify barcodes or invisible ink that would allow devices to recognize each other.

Quoting from the source:

The devices could share the keys using any suitable approach, including for example providing the keys in a manner that an image captured by each device could include the other device’s key. For example, each device can display a seed to be identified from an image taken by the other device. Using the extracted keys or seeds, each device can generate, using a same process, an identical digital handshake key. The digital handshake key can then be used to define a secure communications path between the two devices and share information securely.

When it comes to potential applications, Apple outlines sharing data (videos, photos, contacts, documents, etc.) as well as determining network information, granting VPN access, gaming information, security (including biometrics), and retail.

While technology that can transfer data between devices quickly and securely such as Bump and PayPal already exists, Apple’s preposed plan would create a simpler and more robust transfer method.

The patent application was filed in May 2010 and is credited to Apple UI designers Marcel Van Os and Caroline Cranfill.

How To Follow Apple’s ‘Let’s Talk iPhone’ Event

Apple will be holding their ‘Let’s Talk iPhone’ event later today, unfortunately they aren’t streaming this one live. Luckily, there are plenty of options for those of us who have to get the news as it happens.

TWiT.TV covers all Apple events live, coverage includes expert commentary and often live video from the event. TWiT broadcasts iOS compatible audio and video from their web site and the official TWiT.TV app (iTunes Link). The official app is $0.99 and absolutely worth the money, or you can try the free ‘TWiT Netcast Network’ app from MediaFly (iTunes Link).

If you prefer text based updates, live blogs are the answer. Live blogs provide text and photo updates in real-time. My favorite live blogger is Ryan Block from GDGT, but Ars Technica, Engadget, and Gizmodo all have excellent coverage (all of these links go directly to their live coverage).

After the keynote, Apple usually posts the video to the Apple Events page and podcast (Subscribe in iTunes). And of course, Gary Ng and I will be discussing all the news on a special episode of The iPhone Podcast.

iPhone 4S / 5 To Launch In Canada On November 5th?

Last year when iPhone 4 was announced in June 2010, it was initially made available only in a handful of territories which unfortunately did not include Canada. When a second batch of countries was selected for iPhone 4 launch by the end of July 2010, Canada was eventually included in the list alongside Italy and some other countries. Now according to iPhoneItalia, a source has revealed that the upcoming iPhone 4S / 5 will launch in Italy as part of a ’2nd’ batch of countries much like the iPhone 4, in early November.

Translating from the source:

A source has revealed that the next iPhone model, will arrive in Italy rather late. According to our informant, the phone will not be available for purchase in early November or, at best, toward the end of October.

The fifth day out of the iPhone in Italy may thus occur during the first week of November, probably right on November 4 as suggested by some.

So, if Apple sticks to Canada being in the ‘2nd’ group of countries alongside Italy and others once again, this rumour might allude to the Canadian iPhone 4S / 5 launch date i.e November 5, 2011. What do you think?

Review: Blue Snowflake Portable USB Microphone

When you take this out of the box you really get a sense of how portable this is going to be for you. It folds up and holds the USB cable inside itself. You slide off the plastic casing and the mic folds out, and the USB connects to the back of it. It can sit on a flat surface, like a desk or table, or it can rest on the monitor of your laptop. It boasts a very sturdy design and construction, so it doesn’t feel fragile.

It connects very easily. It doesn’t come with a disc with drivers to install, and there’s nothing to download (on a Mac anyway). It is really plug-and -play. You just plug it in and it works. I had no trouble using it with Garageband, Skype, Screenflow, or any other audio recording program.

The sound quality, the most important thing, is superb. If you’ve listened to The iPhone Podcast, you know the sound quality is really professional sounding. Even with some background noise, I found quality of a vocal recording to be excellent. I used this to record iEvolution.ca’s segment episode 7 of The iPhone Podcast, which should be in iTunes any time now. I will definitely be using it from now on.

Rogers Quietly Modifies iPhone 3G Price Plans

With all the recent hoopla regarding Rogers and their iPhone 3G plans, many have asked the question: Has all this negative press made a difference? With recent news that competitors Bell and Telus announcing their new touch screen phones (Samsung Instinct and HTC Touch Diamond), one would think Rogers would act accordingly to keep up in Canada’s exclusive oligopoly-esque mobile carrier trifecta.

Well, it looks as though the tide might be changing for the better–sort of. Just recently, Rogers quietly edited their iPhone 3G pricing page (thanks for all the emails guys!). They are now offering the following “bonuses” to their monthly plans:

$60 plan gets 75
$75 plan gets 100

BUT THERE’S MORE: New iPhone 3G plans will receive 3 months of unlimited local calling!

Plus, newly added text reads:
“While the iPhone 3G Voice and Data Packages allow you to use this device to its fullest and offer savings over separate voice and data plans, they are not the only options available to you. Other pricing options are available. For example, you may choose to combine one of our new data plans ranging from $30 per month (for 300MB) to $100 per month (for 6GB) with a voice plan.”

In other words, you may use your existing monthly plan with the iPhone 3G and add these separate data plans instead of opting for the iPhone 3G plans (they make this extremely confusing to understand). I think that’s what they are trying to say (does anyone else despise the Rogers website?! It’s so hard to navigate!).

Speaking of messages that we need to send to Rogers, here is a special message to Ted Rogers–from a puppet. We are not responsible for the content of this video–it was produced by an angry Rogers customer!

Another Rogers iPhone Data Petition

RuinediPhone.com was great as it got tonnes of media attention and well over 30,000 signatures. However one flaw was that anyone could sign it multiple times.
