Oh boy, Rogers customers are going to love this.

Navigating over to the 911 fee area of the Rogers Website (or checking out your Rogers invoice), visitors will notice that effective April 12, 2010 Rogers will be increasing their monthly charged $0.50 911 fee to $0.75 per month.

Rogers has given no reason for the price increase, but that isn’t different than any other Rogers price increase.

However, do note that this change only affects existing Rogers customers who are still on an older price plan. In other words, if your wireless invoice has a “GRRF” or Government Regulatory Recovery Fee charge on it, then this change does not affect you.

But, if your wireless invoice has a “System Access Fee” and “Emergency Access Fee” charge on it, the Emergency Fee is increasing to $0.75 from $0.50 per month.

In November 2009, Rogers/Fido launched apps that allowed their customers to track their wireless usage in almost real time. The apps were called “MyAccount” and provided users with great account management functionality.

After the success of the MyAccount app, Rogers may be releasing another iPhone app on March 26, 2010. The app is to be called “Rogers Navigator for iPhone” and will provide users with turn by turn directions.

It is difficult to say how good the app will be compared to apps like TomTom, but at $4.99, it may not be all that bad. Also, unlike the MyAccount apps, it is likely that any iPhone user can use the Rogers Navigator.

Some of the Rogers Navigator features include:

• Real time traffic alerts
• Business finder
• Voice turn by turn directions
• Voice Commands
• One touch re-route
• 2D or 3D maps
• Integration with Address Book
• iPod can be used while the app is running
• Bluetooth-enabled

Effective May 4, 2010, Rogers/Fido will be increasing the price of sent international text messages by $0.10, from $0.25 to $0.35 per sent international text message. The price change applies to both prepaid and postpaid customers:

• The pay-per-use rate for received international text messages will stay the same at $0.15 per received message.

• The pay-per-use rate for sent text messages to the USA will also remain the same at $0.25 per sent message and $0.15 per received message.

• If you currently subscribe to a text message/messaging package (such as a $10 international text message bundle), those customers are not affected by the international text message change listed above.

International Text Message Plans

If you do a lot of international text messages and this rate change will hit you hard, you may want to consider an International Text Messaging plan. While this is not the best solution, it may save you some money each month.

Rogers/Fido have International Text Message plans starting at $4.00 per month for postpaid customers. For prepaid customers, Rogers has a $6.00 per month package and Fido prepaid customers have a $0.50 per day rate for 50 sent international text messages.

Rogers has introduced their One Rate Plans that will allow 1GB of data to be used anywhere in Canada and the USA. One iPhoneinCanada.ca reader, Justin Luey has given his take on Rogers One Rate Plans:

Rogers has just announced new North American data plans, these plans allow customers to use data while traveling in the U.S with no extra roaming charges. The data used in the U.S is billed the same as if you were in Canada. Rogers claims that these plans cost “about $10 more” than their regular data plans. This is great news unless you are an iPhone user.Rogers’ press release didn’t contain any iPhone specific data packages, and failed to mention if there was an add-on option for people’s existing data plans. Many iPhone users are on the $30 a month 6 gig plan that was offered to early adopters. No one using an iPhone is going to give up 6 gigs a month in exchange for 1 gig that they can use in the U.S.

I was able to confirm this morning that Rogers isn’t offering an add-on to existing plans and is not planning to offer any iPhone plans. Here is a link to the confirmation on Twitter.

Recent history tells us two things about how Rogers treats iPhone users, their first instinct is to screw or ignore them, and they always correct the problem if there is a public outcry. You would think they would have learned their lesson by now, but apparently they haven’t. So it’s time for another outcry.

Effective today, and expiring on March 31, 2010, Rogers has released a new $25 student plan that targets individuals who do much more text messaging than calling.

The new plan primarily features unlimited text messaging (not video or photo) and evenings start at 6PM for free (usually $7).

New $25 Student Plan:

• Daytime: 50 minutes
• Evenings & Weekends: Unlimited at 6PM
• Features included: Unlimited Text Messages, Call Waiting, Group Calling, Call Forwarding, Who Called, Call Manager

The new student plan is available on a monthly/1/2/3-year agreement. and to high-school/post-secondary individuals only.

The restrictions are as follows:

• High-School and Post-Secondary individuals only
• Students must activate in-store
• Student must have valid ID card from High School or Post-Secondary institution

iPhone owners/existing customers (who are students) are eligible for the plan. If you want data, you must purchase a $25 or higher data plan on a monthly/1/2/3-year agreement. However, to get an iPhone at promotional pricing, a 3-year Voice and Data agreement is required.

In the beginning of February, Rogers released a series of new price plans for both existing and new customers. Today, the company has modified some of those new plans to include newer and better features.

One of the more negative changes made at the beginning of February was made to the $50 Voice and Data combo plan. At that time, the $50 combo plan lost its 50 bonus minutes and its My5 option was reduced from My5 Canada-wide Unlimited Talk/Text and replaced with My5 Unlimited Local Talk Only.

Effective today, and until March 31, 2010, the $50 combo package has regained its 50 bonus minutes and My5 Canada-wide Unlimited Talk/Text option.

New $50 Smartphone Plan:

• Daytime: 150 minutes + 50 Bonus Minutes
• Evenings & Weekends: Unlimited at 9PM
• Data: 500MB
• Features: Unlimited Messages OR My5 Canada-Wide (talk, text, picture, video) OR Unlimited Local Network Calling OR Double Your Minutes

The new $60 Voice and Data combo plan that debuted at the beginning of February also gained 50 bonus minutes for a total of 300 local daytime minutes.

• Evenings & Weekends: Unlimited at 9PM
• Data: 500MB

Sometime this week, Apple and the Canadian wireless carriers increased the 3G file size limit for App Store downloads up to 20MB.

Previously, when users were connected to 3G, they could only download apps that were up to 10MB in size. Anything greater than 10MB needed a WiFi connection.

The new limit is now 20MB and anything greater than 20MB will need WiFi.

However, unless you have the Rogers/Fido 6GB data plan, we recommend to always download apps on WiFi. The Canadian wireless carriers do not provide very much data and you don’t want to be using it up downloading apps when you can use WiFi.
