iPhone 5 with 4-Inch Display Set to Launch This Summer? [Rumour]

Update 1: John Gruber disagrees with Seth W. from 9to5Mac and says the next iPhone is not underway, and calls the claim of a bigger size ‘bullshit’.

Next generation iPhone 5 rumours already? You better believe it because 9to5Mac claims a reliable source from Foxconn has provided them with the following information:

4+ inch display (made by LG on at least one of them)
No teardrop-shaped devices as were rumored in the lead up to the iPhone 4S. Samples so far have been symmetrical in thickness. Also longer/wider.
None of the sample devices have the iPhone 4/4S form factor
None of the devices are final versions

The source notes the next iPhone is geared for production with numerous prototypes floating around, and this was the same source that told them the 4S was coming instead of a brand new iPhone 5.

Morgan Stanley Analyst Details Thinner ‘iPhone 5′ and LTE Support

Apple Insider is reporting today that an analyst for Morgan Stanley informed investors of some tidbits she has garnered on a recent trip to Asia. She claims that the third-generation iPad (with a higher resolution display) is due before the end of the second quarter and that a new iPhone will follow later this year.

The analyst says that details on the upcoming iPhone were “sparse” saying she expects a release in the third quarter but that launch will depend on “manufacturing yields”. The article does point out that the analyst’s note to investors relays that new touch panel technology will allow Apple to offer a thinner iPhone and that the Cupertino, California-based company is pondering the use of new casing materials for their next device.

The other big item of note is the claim that the device will contain “Qualcomm’s quad-mode chip” which would mean that the device could employ 3G and LTE networks and with so many supposed “4G” speed phones already on the market, Apple would be remiss to skip LTE capabilities in their next offering.

Finally, Huberty does make mention of difficult supply chain realities for Apple of late, stating “worse than normal seasonality” for the first two quarters of 2012 due to “macro pressures and back-end loaded product cycles”. This kind of supply insecurity is likely what Apple is attempting to avoid with its recent purchase of Israeli company Anobit.

iPhone 5 Will Launch This Fall, Says Analyst

According to a research note from senior analyst Tavis McCourt of Morgan Keegan, Apple’s next generation iPhone handset, aka the iPhone 5, is due to be launched this fall. The analyst also believes that the iPhone will comprise roughly 50% of Apple’s total revenue in the next financial quarter. With this, he is also increasing his iPhone shipment estimate for the next quarter to 29 million from the previous estimate of 27 million.

Quoting from the news source:

“We expect iPhone revenues to represent 47.5% of Apple’s total revenues in [the December quarter], up from 38.8% in the Sep. quarter, and up from 39.1% in the year ago period,” he wrote.

The iPhone 5 and Apple TV will be significant growth drivers later in the year. “We expect iPhone 5 in fall 2012 to be a significant revenue and earnings growth driver, and a potential Apple TV as upside to our model if it comes to fruition this year,” he wrote.

What else can we expect on the iPhone 5 front? Well, as of now, a wide number of rumors has suggested a completely redesigned handset with a combination of aluminum on the back and a “rubber or plastic material” along the sides to bridge the front and back of the device, a larger 4-inch touchscreen and a quad core A6 processor.

Apple Planning Completely Redesigned iPhone for Fall 2012 Launch [Rumour]

Jonathan S. Geller of BGR is reporting that Apple plans to launch a redesigned iPhone in the fall of 2012. The release is said to be around the same time that the iPhone 4S launched this year. The report goes on to detail that the next iPhone will utilize an aluminum back panel and use a rubber or plastic bezel to protect the device’s antennas from direct skin contact.

We have also learned that Apple is planning to use a rubber or plastic material — similar to the material used in the company’s bumper cases — that will be built into the new iPhone case. In all likelihood, this material will be used as a bezel surrounding the front edge of the phone (like the iPhone 3GS bezel) and it will serve two purposes. First, it will join the glass iPhone face with a new aluminum back plate. It will also cover a redesigned antenna system that surrounds the device, allowing Apple to build the rear case out of aluminum without having to use a large plastic insert above the antennas as the company does on its iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G.

Commenting on the report, 9to5Mac writes that “[t]he last we’d heard from our contacts at Foxconn was that the iPhone 5 would be delivered in the summer of 2012 along with a slightly bigger screen with the same resolution, faster processor and redesigned form factor.”

BGR has a mixed track record when it comes to hardware rumours.

Apple Advertises iTunes Boxing Week Sale in Canada

Apple typically hosts one sale a year, on Black Friday, forgoing any sort of Boxing Day discounts. However, this year, Canadians are getting an exclusive iTunes Boxing Week sale. Boxing Day is recognized in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and a few other Commonwealth nations, but so far, the iTunes sale is only appearing in the Canadian iTunes Stores.

The sale includes a selection of songs discounted to 69-cent and albums selling between $5.99 and $7.99. The selection of 69-cent song consisting of the top-selling and best songs from 2011, as well as a selection of classic hits.

At the moment there’s no indication how long the sale will last.

Apple Canada has also recently announced their 12 Days of Christmas promotion, where each day will include a free download of either music, TV, movies, apps, or books.

Sony & Hitachi Begin Shipping 4-Inch Displays For iPhone 5?

A Japanese Mac blog, Macotakara (via Apple Insider), is claiming that Sony Mobile Display Corporation and Hitachi Displays have begun shipping 4-inch displays for a new iOS device. Though the blog doesn’t elaborate which device the new displays will be used for, but the obvious choice seems to be the redesigned iPhone 5 which is strongly rumored to sport a larger display and tapered design with aluminum casing. Aside from the iPhone 5, the iPad 3 is also reportedly poised to arrive next and similar to the 2012 iPhone, the iPad 3?s screen is rumored to include Hitachi and Sony Mobile liquid crystal displays.

According to Asian source, Hitachi Displays, Ltd. and Sony Mobile Display Corporation started to ship 4-inch LCD for new iOS device and LCD for iPad 3. These 2 companies will be merged their business with Toshiba Mobile Display Co., Ltd., as “Japan Display” in 2012 spring.

The report also claims that an unspecified Taiwanese company will soon be “providing LCD technology faces” to Apple for a “fundamentally changed” iPad 4 that will be manufactured by a new process.

Appcessories Section: A Blend Of Apps & Accessories, Coming Soon To Apple Stores?

A recent report by T3 (via 9to5Mac) suggests that 3rd-party hardware add-ons called Appcessories for iPhones and iPads will soon be making their way into the Apple Stores. Bandar Antabi, the vice president and head of special projects at Jawbone speculates that Apple could well expand its retail experience with “a new section dedicated to app-connected hardware” in the near future.

Appcessories are going to play a significant role in the future of smartphones and applications. We will begin to see more and more companies integrate applications with accessories and other devices that can complement your smartphone experience. [...] There is a lot of motivation for retailers to create specific appcessory sections within their storefronts to better promote this growing range of products.

As crazy as the term Appcessories might sound, the idea of app-connected hardware itself sounds pretty appealing though. However as 9to5Mac notes, “T3‘s track record is not so great”. But who knows, Apple might actually be thinking about this as they have promoted similar hardware in the past, dedicated to the iPod lifestyle.

Battle Of LTE Smartphones Heats Up, Will iPhone 5 Get LTE In 2012?

DigiTimes is reporting that 2012 is going to be the year of LTE-enabled smartphones, especially in the US when Sprint Nextel starts kicking off its LTE services in the middle of the year. The company is planning to launch 15 LTE-enabled devices, including smartphones, tablet PCs and mobile data cards in mid-2012 as revealed by DigiTimes sources in Taiwan. As reported in the past, Apple has delayed an LTE device due to the size of Qualcomm’s existing modem utilized in iPhone 4S, which requires a larger design and also a bigger battery to power the device, something most likely the iPhone 5 will sport.

Among smartphone vendors, HTC, Samsung Electronics, Motorola Mobility and LG Electronics have offered a number of LTE-enabled models, with HTC currently taking up a 60% share of the 4G segment in the US, revealed the sources.

Nokia, Apple, RIM and Sony Ericsson are expected to join the LTE club in 2012 as more telecom service providers around the globe are also going to launch LTE services in the coming year, said the sources.

A total of 35 LTE networks globally have already entered commercial operations, with the number of such networks to exceeding 100 prior to the end of 2012, according to data released by GSA (Global Mobile Suppliers Association).

As suggested by this report, Apple is expected to join the LTE club next year as well. Will iPhone 5 be Apple’s answer to the growing LTE market competition?

Last Minute iPhone 4S Pricing & Launch Date Leaked?

Just as we anxiously wait for the clock to strike the big hour when Apple begins today’s iPhone 4S media event, a few interesting last minute rumors have just popped up. According to a report by 9to5Mac, the international pricing of speculated iPhone 4S has been leaked for the unlocked version. They claim that a 64GB iPhone 4S will replace the price of the current 32GB iPhone 4 whereas the price of the new 32GB iPhone 4S will replace the price of the current 16GB iPhone 4. Meanwhile, the report also claims that October 14th is going to be the iPhone 4S launch day when Apple Stores are scheduled open at 7AM & close at midnight.

With this knowledge, we think it’s highly likely that the 64GB iPhone 4S will cost $299, the 32GB will cost $199, and the 16GB will drop down to $99 in the United States. The 8GB iPhone 4 (N90A) will most likely cost $49, which will replace the current $49 iPhone 3GS price point.

We’re now hearing that Apple is preparing their retail stores for an October 14th iPhone launch. This phone will of course be the iPhone 4S with an A5 processor. Apple Stores are also planning overnights for October 13th. We’ve also heard that stores will open at 7AM for the crowds on that Friday.

iPhone 5 Temporarily Shows Up On Cincinnati Bell Website [ScreenShots]

Here is an interesting iPhone 4S / 5 leak. America’s leading telephone company Cincinnati Bell’s official website briefly listed a new iPhone today i.e an iPhone 5 which were removed pretty quickly after that. However, a TUAW reader Cory L. captured a screenshot from his web browser (shown below) while browsing the company’s website. The screenshot clearly shows a placeholder for an iPhone 5 with no image and no “Add to basket” purchase button. Even more interesting is that the screenshot also shows specs and prices with the iPhone 5 listing.

As noted by the source, the specs shown above such as an 8MP camera, 4G speeds and a 4″ screen with iPhone 5, all align with majority of rumors that we’ve already heard about the device. However, soon after this screenshot was published by TUAW, they received another screenshot from the same site showing a cheaper iPhone 4S with different specs.

Well, lets not get too excited here looking at the above screenshots since nothing is yet confirmed. I’m sure we’ll find it all out on Tuesday, October 4th at Apple’s “Lets Talk iPhone” media event in Cupertino. Stay tuned!
