How to Turn your iPhone into a BlackBerry

If you’ve been following me on Twitter, you may have noticed that there has been some debate recently with Stephen Fung from FutureLooks.com. Stephen was going to purchase an iPhone 3G, until he walked into Rogers and fell in love instantly with a BlackBerry Bold, and ended up buying that instead. Jeez, poor guy hehe

The iPhone is one amazing device for what it can do well (surf the web, email, camera, iPod, videos, slick UI, form factor, App Store, etc). It definitely is one of the strongest contenders for the perfect phone.

Apple has been addressing our needs and desires through firmware updates, so in due time the iPhone just keeps getting better and better. However, let’s be honest here, there are shortfalls such as the lack of copy and paste (Clippy solves this if you’re jailbroken) and push notifications.

Now, for all your friends that don’t own iPhones and proudly show off their BlackBerries, there is a way to prevent yourself from the the rare disease, “BlackBerry-envy”. It’s slightly contagious and it’s spreading from coast to coast, so watch out.

Here’s how to turn your iPhone into a BlackBerry, which will pleasantly surprise your BlackBerry friends as you emulate their so called “greatness” through the power of Winterboard! The following themes are available through Cydia:

Now, I apologize to those out there just suffered from temporary blindness from the pictures shown above. I’d like you to know that these themes have been uninstalled on my iPhone so no serious damage has been done. Also, by uninstalling Winterboard you can speed up your iPhone too.

Personally, I think you can’t compare the two phones because they’re totally different. They each have their strengths, but for my needs the iPhone wins hands down. The BlackBerry UI is just too painful for me to even fathom using. The trackball is pure torture when you’re browsing the web with the BlackBerry browser.

So if you’ve been suffering from an identity crisis from switching to an iPhone from a BlackBerry, you can now cure your RIM-desires by installing the above themes. How lovely!

There are more and more Canadians out there owning iPhones, it’s only going to increase! The other day I asked you, my loyal readers out there to email me your homescreen screenshots (sorry to the 1.1.3 people out there! let’s hope for an update to ScreenShot!).

Well, in about a day and half I have received lots of emails from those who managed to email me. Here is a gallery of the screenshots in no particular order–this ought to show all your soon-to-be iPhone owners what’s capable when you install 3rd party apps like SummerBoard and Customize!

The iPhone Homescreen Screenshot Post!

Hey everyone, I thought I’d mix it up today by letting you guys have some input for my next post! Get ready to get interactive! Lots of people who want an iPhone might not have any clue about what the possibilities are with customizing your iPhone homescreen/springboard.

So the task for you guys today is to take a screenshot of your springboard using ScreenShot, then emailing it to me! I will compile as many as I can in an upcoming post I will display a gallery of them with your name next to yours. Let’s see how unique your iPhones really are!

How to take a screenshot of your Springboard

Launch Installer. Make sure you have a solid list of “sources”.
Go to Install. Go to the Utilities category. Install ScreenShot (don’t see it? check here). Press the Home button.
Launch ScreenShot and turn it “ON”. Change your file image save directory to “Camera Roll 100APPLE” (yours may look different; basically this will save images to the photo gallery).
Press Home. You will see a small icon that says “snap” in the corner. Press it.
Email your picture to iphone.in.canada AT gmail dot com
Now cross your fingers and hope your screenshot will be added to the gallery!

How to Change Your iPhone Wallpaper or Theme

You wanted to be different from everyone else by getting an iPhone. Now that you have your unlocked iPhone in Canada, how are you going to make your new toy unique and original? That’s easy, all you need to do now is change your iPhone’s wallpaper or theme. Let’s get started on how we do this on our iPhones, with the help of a 3rd party application called “Summerboard”!

How to Change Your iPhone Wallpaper or Theme

1. Open Installer, go to All Packages, and then install “Summerboard” (Version 3.0 if you’re on 1.1.1 or 1.1.2; or, “Summerboard Old” if you’re on firmware version 1.0.2). Restart your iPhone. Summerboard is a program that will let you download themes and change your iPhone’s wallpaper.

2. Next, launch Summerboard (the icon reads SMBPrefs) from your Springboard. Go to Theme, and select one of the provided themes. If you want to use the theme wallpaper, go to Theme Wallpaper and change the box to “On”. Otherwise, your chosen wallpaper will be your background.

Here is the default iPhone Springboard:

3. Within Installer, if you go to “Themes (Summerboard)” and you will see a long list of cool looking themes:

Here are a couple examples of what your iPhone can look like when you customize the themes and wallpaper through Summerboard:

Couple notes: some people have experienced a slowdown with your iPhone by installing Summerboard (including more crashes when using Safari). I have experienced this myself with 1.1.1, so I have Summerboard uninstalled. I like the default iPhone theme. But for you, feel free to choose whatever theme or wallpaper you desire!

PS – Sorry about the lack of update yesterday, I have been working full time so that means my spare time is at a minimum right now! Stayed tuned for more though!
