Check Out the New Google Account ID Popup in Mobile Safari

For those avid users of the Google Mobile interface on the iPhone, you may have noticed a minor update. When you load Google.com and navigate to apps such as Gmail, Reader, Docs, or Tasks, a new slick animation appears to display your Google Account ID.

Near the top, a message will appear to read “Logged in as _____@gmail.com”, as seen below. The pop up fades in and out, and looks neat more than anything.

Back in June, Google updated their mobile interface to include a new top bar with easier access to Google services. This new feature, although a small one does make the mobile interface act more like an app, rather than a boring mobile site.

Yesterday, Google re-introduced the Gmail iOS app back into the App Store, after a disappointing initial launch.

Translink Next Bus Beta Tracks Your Bus in Real Time

Translink here in Vancouver has added a new feature to its mobile website to track your bus in real time. ‘Next Bus Beta’ requires you to plug in your bus stop number and afterwards you’ll be able to see your bus moving on a map as you refresh the page, with updates every two minutes.

This beta has been in testing since September, utilizing the GPS units in each bus. Not all buses update at the same time since each bus has its own clock.

This comes as a widely applauded new service as the company has allowed its iPhone app to deteriorate. You can check out Next Bus Beta by visiting: http://nb.translink.ca/

Royal LePage Launches iPhone Mobile Site

Royal LePage has launched a new mobile site compatible with the iPhone and other smartphones. Visitors to royallepage.ca via their iPhones will be greeted with an easy to use mobile site, that can take advantage of your location to determine listings around you.

The site will also allow sellers and agents to leave comments on listings to provide further insight to users. The interface is simple, and there is also support for French as well.

YouTube Mobile Offers Users Opt-In to New Experimental Layout

For users of YouTube’s mobile layout, it appears Google has started to enable the opt-in of a new experimental layout, as noted by MacStories. This new version provides a refreshed look that is cleaner with a darker emphasis throughout the layout.

To check out this new version of YouTube mobile, just visit m.youtube.com/new_visual_design to manually enable it. Immediately you’ll notice a sleeker layout as part of YouTube’s Cosmic Panda experiment, an initiative to improve the video experience.

The HD quality icon is emphasized and comes with a new slick animation when toggled on or off. I did encounter some messed up pages when I was logged into my YouTube account.

All in all, this new experimental layout is worth trying out. Is it worth it? Most definitely–it allowed me to stumble upon the fascinating world of Angry Birds nail art (yes, Angry Birds nail art):

HSBC Canada Launches Mobile Banking Site for iPhone and iPod touch

HSBC Canada has quietly launched a full-fledged mobile banking site for iPhone and iPod touch users. Rather than submit an app through the App Store, this new mobile site will allow customers to pay bills, transfer money between accounts and check account details and transaction history.

The service will require HSBC Canada customers to be registered for HSBC Internet Banking to use the service. Just visit hsbc.ca/mobile in Safari on your iPhone or iPod touch and you’ll reach the secure login page. For security, you will not be able to concurrently logged into both Personal Internet Banking and Mobile Banking.

How is Mobile Banking different from Personal Internet Banking?

Bill payees must be set up first in Personal Internet Banking.

All transactions are processed “Now.” No future-dated or recurring transactions can be initiated in Mobile Banking.

Wire transfers cannot be initiated in Mobile Banking. Wire transfers can only be initiated in Personal Internet Banking.

Electronic Fund Transfers (EFT) and Access and Security changes cannot be initiated or authorized in Mobile Banking. Initiation and authorization is only available through Personal Internet Banking.

This is an awesome service for HSBC Canada customers, and it joins the other banks such as CIBC, TD, RBC, Scotiabank, and BMO that have mobile banking abilities too.

Gmail Mobile Receives Multiple Sign-In Support and Preference Setting Options

Google has just announced on their Gmail blog the addition of multiple sign-in support for Gmail mobile users along with preference support from your mobile device.

You can now switch accounts quickly by selecting your account from the Accounts menu:

You can also set your signature too. From the view menus just tap the new settings icon and untick/tick your new signature. The same can be done to edit your vacation auto-responder too.

Google has also updated URLs to provide a specific bookmark for each account, so you should update your bookmarks to reflect this new change.

Back in August, Gmail mobile received Retina Display graphics, and earlier in April the ‘undo bar’ was introduced. Gmail mobile is still the fastest way for me to search my Gmail account for messages.

Victoria’s CHEK News Livestream Brings Live Broadcasts to your iPhone

Vancouver Island’s first private TV station (and the first employee-owned station in North America), CHEK, is taking their news channel to a new level. They have unleashed a live stream to bring news broadcasts to your iPhone (or any other iOS device) for free.

The channel has a slight 30-45 second delay, but nonetheless all news content is right there for you. If you’re an infomercial addict, you’ll get to see some playing when newscasts aren’t being aired. If you’re living in Victoria or Vancouver Island, you’ll want to check out the free news stream from your iOS device.

All you have to do is visit this link and you’ll be watching CHEK on your iPhone. Aside from CBC Vancouver, this is the only other station where you’ll see BC news icon Tony Parsons on air.

CanadaWest.TV Launched: Watch Live CIS University Sports on your iPhone

CanadaWest.TV is a partnership between the Canada West Universities Athletic Association and Stretch Internet, and will enable live viewing of CIS basketball and volleyball on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Action will also be enabled on the web as well. The live sports will begin for the 2011-12 season and beyond, with the first live stream on September 2nd, a football game between the UBC Thunderbirds and Regina Rams at Mosaic Stadium.

If you attend any of the 14 Canada West universities, this will be an awesome way to view live sports. For all the alumni out there you’ll enjoy this too. Just visit www.CanadaWest.TV on your iOS device.

Verrus Introduces PayByPhone Mobile Website

If you use Verrus, who is a company that partners with parking authorities across Canada to allow users to pay for parking via phone instead of at the meter, you will be really happy with their latest update!

Verrus has now created a smartphone optimized mobile site that enables users to log in to their account, and associated parking lot number, to pay for parking! While the phone process was not inconvenient, it is great to have an additional method to access your account. Note that you must have a data plan from your wireless carrier to access the Internet.

Once on the mobile site, users can do the following:

Pay for parking
Extend parking (the mobile site will be great for this!)
Edit vehicles
Edit payment details
Manage account settings
Sign-up for a PayByPhone account

In Vancouver, I use Verrus all the time with EasyPark. The only thing missing now is the official iPhone App!

Google Updates Gmail iOS Webapp With Connection Bar

Today, Google updated their Gmail Webapp for iOS with a “connection bar”.

Using Gmail in Safari on your iPhone gives you access to fast search, conversation view, stars, labels, and more. But itâ€™s sometimes frustrating not knowing whether your email has been sent or whether your phone has a functioning internet connection at all. To address this, we recently introduced the â€œconnection bar.â€ The connection bar appears at the bottom of the screen when needed to give you the info you wantâ€” and then gets out of the way.

The new feature better communicates the status of iPhone user inboxes by displaying information for outgoing and sent mail, internet connection, and other alerts.

The connection bar won’t always appear, as it only shows up when specific activity is triggered such as when sending an email from your iPhone when using the Gmail webapp.
