aTV Flash 1.3 (black) Update Brings Automated Firmware Backups

For those using aTV Flash (black) for their second generation Apple TVs, Firecore has just announced their 1.3 update that includes automated firmware backups and other miscellaneous features and bug fixes. The former 1.2 update was released back in mid-January brought various zoom options.

It’s not quite Valentine’s Day, but we couldn’t wait to show how much we love you all – so today we have a fresh new version just for you. Version 1.3 includes an all-new firmware backup option, new translations, playback enhancements and a whole slew of other improvements and fixes.

aTV Flash is essentially an easy way to enhance your jailbroken Apple TV. You can check out the full change log here. You can install this update by going to the Maintenance –> Manage Extras menu on your Apple TV.

Reminder: Save Your iOS 5.0.1 SHSH Blobs Before It’s Too Late

Apple could release iOS 5.1 to the public anytime now and when that happens, the window for saving iOS 5.0.1 SHSH blobs will be closed forever. As of now, every iPhone, iPod touch and iPad model is jailbreak-able untethered on iOS 5.0.1 using latest versions of popular jailbreak tools like Redsn0w, Absinthe or CLI. Therefore it is highly recommended that you save the latest SHSH blobs for all your iOS devices using latest TinyUmbrella.

@Notcom has posted a short reminder regarding this on TinyUmbrella blog:

“With the quiet time between jailbreak and iOS version, make sure you get your SHSHs saved. I’ve been working on the TinyUmbrella rewrite (albeit sparingly due to real life demands). It’s important to make sure you have your 5.0.1 SHSHs tucked away safe. There is no guarantee that we’ll have things this good again.”

Top 5 Jailbreak Tweaks for the iPhone 4S in Cydia [Video]

Jailbreaking opens your iOS devices to a lot of different tweaks and customization. And with so many options in Cydia, it can be tough to go through them all.

I’ve put together a list of the Top 5 Jailbreak tweaks I’ve made to my iPhone 4S. By no means are these the definitive best five, but they are the ones I’m getting a lot of use out of right now, and ones I think add more functionality to the iPhone 4S.

I should point out, only one of the tweaks is limited to the iPhone 4S, and that’s because it’s a change to Siri. So the others can likely be used on your other iOS devices. Just make sure to check the descriptions within Cydia.

Neurotech Siri: The Coolest WinterBoard Theme For Siri [VIDEO]

Neurotech Siri is undoubtedly the coolest WinterBoard theme for Siri available yet. With over 300 frames of animation on the Siri logo, Neurotech Siri adds a cool Siri icon to normal Siri and its dictation elements along with a new weather theme and clock. The theme also adds a cool battery lock theme when installed. To apply, simply download Neurotech Siri form Cydia and use Winterboard to select it.

‘Booksstand’ Lets You Put iBooks Inside iOS 5 Newsstand [Cydia Tweak]

A new tweak called Booksstand has just gone live in Cydia which allows users to put their iBooks inside the Newsstand folder on iOS 5 devices. The tweak actually lets you add shortcuts for your favorite books and PDFs in the Newsstand folder and access them directly in the iBooks app. Once the tweak is downloaded and installed from Cydia, users can export any iBook to the Newsstand by selecting it and using the ‘move’ option to put it in the Booksstand collection from inside the iBooks app (latest iBooks update required).

The tweak does not actually move any iBooks to a different collection but only makes them available in Newsstand. Once done, you can treat your iBooks like any other Newsstand applications.

iOSOpenDev 1.0.1 Released, Allows Easy Creation Of Cydia Packages With Xcode

We told you about the iOSOpenDev project and now, it has finally been released. With iOSOpenDev utility, you get ready to use Xcode templates for creating common types of jailbreak tweaks, including Activator listeners, command line tools, dynamic libraries, Notification Center widgets, SBSettings toggles, Siri AssistantExtensions & Mobile Substrate. The tool even compiles the projects into the .deb files for easy submission to Cydia.

The initial release of iOSOpenDev reportedly had a lot of bugs but updated version 1.0.1 has seemed to fix majority of them. You can download it from here. Below are the release notes:

Mac OS X 10.6.x or 10.7.x

dpkg — provides dpkg-deb for building Debian packages, install using MacPorts (http://www.macports.org)

1.0.1 (05-Feb-2012)

Installer’s “Dependency Tools” option will no longer try to install dpkg (and MacPorts if needed). This was causing too many problems for end-users. The MacPorts and dpkg installations were failing too often.

Installer’s “Set up latest iOS SDK” option will (intentionally) fail if dpkg-deb is not found.

Installer’s “Dump SDK Header Files” option is not selected by default. End-users were experiencing high processing time for this option and dumping of header files can be done with the iosod tool anyways.

Added an “Import Information” message in the installer in hopes it’s actually read!

Added missing quotes around variables in iosod tool in hopes to resolve an issue when a project has a space in its path.

“Unsetting” language in all scripts which may be the cause of a possible grep issue.

Canadian Carrier Logos for Zeppelin [Cydia Tweak]

As a reader, I visit iPhoneinCanada.ca everyday. As a writer, I seem to drop in and out, depending on my schedule at home. As a graphic designer, I have released a few themes in Cydia, but haven’t done so in a long time. Well, today I have released a new add on for the Zeppelin tweak, bringing logos for all the Canadian carriers of the iPhone.

The Zeppelin tweak, available in Cydia for free, allows you to easily change the carrier in the status bar to whatever logo you want, without installing Winterboard. Although the tweak does come with a few logos, you can also add your own. You just have to SSH (or use a USB program like DiskAid) into your device and navigate to Library>Zeppelin. Here you’ll see how the packages are put together, what to name the files, and what side your .PNG images should be.

I decided to make myself a Rogers logo for this tweak, and then realized there are probably a lot of other Canadians wanting the same. Then I thought, well there are a bunch of other carriers in Canada, and all those customers might want the same thing. The images are easy enough to create, if you have basic knowledge of Photoshop. For the black status bar, you will want a white image. In the silver status bar, you can create a colour image. This is not a strict rule, so you could have all the same image for both, but the way I have done it stays closer to Apple’s design in iOS.

The great thing about these logos, is I have put them all in one package, and it is now available in Cydia, for free! It will be in the ModMyi repository. Unlock Each & Every Game Center Achievement With This Awesome Free Tweak [Cydia]

For those who love playing games on their jailbroken iOS devices, this one is specifically for them. A brand new Cydia tweak called Overachiever has just been released which literally unlocks each and every Game Center achievement on any game installed on your iPhone, iPod or iPad. Once you download and install the tweak, a new Settings pane appears in the Settings.app showing a list of all Game Center supported games installed on your device. Next to every game, you will see an On/Off switch. Once you turn the switch to on, every single achievement for that game is unlocked.

I personally don’t play many games on my iOS devices but even if I do play a few of them, I wouldn’t use this tweak since it would actually kill the whole game-challenging experience. Plus, many would consider this as cheating. Remember that once you unlock the achievements for a game by flipping the On/Off switch, the information is written into Game Center and uploaded to Apple servers permanently. So think twice before you flip that switch!

Easily Create Custom Commands & Enhance Your Siri Experience With ‘MyAssistant’ [Cydia Tweak]

Yet another Siri related jailbreak tweak called MyAssistant has recently gone live in the Cydia Store. MyAssistant is quite an impressive tweak which allows users to set up their own customized commands for an enhanced Siri experience. Once you download and install MyAssistant, you will be able to easily configure your own Siri commands which can be used to perform actions like changing iPhone settings, iPhone re-spring, locking the handset etc. You can even create custom conversations with Siri.

Here is the official description:

Siri : as you like it. MyAssistant is the best tweak to enhance the power of Siri.

With it you can use Activator events, this mean that you can use all the Activator apps with Siri, so you can use all the Activator features with Siri! With it you can manage System Toggle via Siri (Wifi – 3G – Bluetooth – Location – Airplane mode – Brightness – Volume)

You can add commands to Siri like : Respring – Reboot – Power off – Safe mode – Lock – Unlock – Take a pic – Battery percentage and open apps.

You can also make Siri answers to a question as you want it (for example you can make Siri says “You are awesome” in reply to a custom question that you can set in the Settings.app. As last feature you can change the Siri background, just picking the new one from Photos.app

‘Messages2PDF’ Lets You Save Your iPhone SMS As PDF And Email For Backup [Cydia]

Another new tweak called Messages2PDF has just hit the Cydia store. Developed by Alberto De Luca, the tweak lets users export full SMS conversations in the iPhone’s Messages.app as a PDF file. The PDF file generated by the tweak can be sent and shared via Email or saved as a backup of any important messages. The tweak works with both iOS 4 and iOS 5 and also supports iMessages. Once you download and install it, you will need to set up your international prefix via the tweak’s settings in order to allow PDF export.

You can download Messages2PDF from Cydia via the BigBoss repo for $1.49.
