Create An Editable Photo Stream Smart Album In iPhoto [How To]

When you take photos on an iOS device, your new photos are automatically uploaded to iCloud and pushed to all your other devices including your Mac’s iPhoto, thanks to Photo Stream, a feature introduced by Apple with launch of iOS 5. However, Apple forgot to add support for editing these photos in iPhoto’s Photo Stream folder due to which you can’t even drag a photo from Photo Stream to another album. Instead, iPhoto prompts you to browse the original imported photo in your library first in order to edit or move the photo to another album. But now, we have a neat workaround from Here’s The Thing (via CNET ) which lets you create a “Smart Album” in iPhoto with editable copies of all your Photo Stream images.

Follow these simple steps to create an editable Photo Stream Smart Album in iPhoto:

Open iPhoto, click the File menu in the top-left corner of the screen, and select “New Smart Album.”
In the window that slides down from the top of the iPhoto interface, type “Photo Stream” (or whatever you’d like to call your new album) in the “Smart Album name” field.
Next, in the “Match the following condition” section, click the drop down menu that reads “Album” and select “Any Text.”
The second drop-down menu should read “contains”; if it does, just leave it—that’s what we want.
In the last, blank field, type “Photo Stream,” then click the OK button.

That’s it, you should now see a new album called Photo Stream with all the new and old images from your Photo Stream, completely editable. Enjoy!

Use Siri’s Voice Dictation Feature On A Mac [How To]

We recently published a post showing how you can send group messages and emails with Siri, the digital voice assistant. Today, we’ll show you how you can use Siri’s voice dictation feature to dictate text to your Mac (via TUAW). All you need is an app on your iPhone 4S that allows you to access your Mac’s keyboard functions remotely such as Mobile Mouse.

Below are the steps:

Step 1:

Download Mobile Mouse from the App Store on your iPhone 4S.

Step 2:

Download and install “Mobile Mouse Server” software on your Mac from here.

Step 3:

Make sure your iPhone 4S and your Mac are connected to the same WiFi network.

Step 4:

When you have your Mac’s keyboard and mouse in control on your iPhone using Mobile Mouse, simply tap the “dictation button” on the keyboard. This will allow you to dictate text straight to your Mac.

Step 5:

As long as you have a cursor inserted into a text field, you can use the dictation button on your iPhone’s keyboard to use Siri to dictate texts directly to your Mac.

FaceTime Over 3G Is Hidden Inside iOS 5, You Can Enable It Yourself

Our friends over at FSM have posted a nice little tutorial on how you can enable FaceTime over 3G natively in iOS 5 on your jailbroken device. You must be already aware that FaceTime calls require both the caller and the recipient to be connected to a WiFi network. Even though 3G connections are found to support FaceTime calls just fine with pretty decent video quality, Apple does not seem it allow it by default. Though there are a couple of tweaks available on Cydia which can easily override Apple’s restrictions but it turns out that “FaceTime over 3G” is a built-in feature of iOS 5. You just need to enable it!

Here is a simple guide to walk you through the process:

1. You will need a jailbroken iOS 5 device with FaceTime and 3G. Since the 4S and iPad 2 aren’t Jailbroken yet that leaves the iPhone 4.

2. Use your favorite file browser such as iFile for iPhone or iExplorer for mac and windows to navigate to/System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/

3. Inside you will find a file called N90AP.plist open it.

4. Add

3Gvenice

Directly below in capabilities as shown below.

How To Hide / Unhide Your App Store Purchases In iOS

With iOS 5 and iCloud introduction, tons of new stuff can be done which previously wasn’t possible. One of them is the ability to hide your previously bought applications from the App Store. This is actually pretty handy especially if you share your iTunes & App Store account with someone else, say your wife, and you don’t want her to find out about a certain app that you recently bought. We’ll show how this can be done on your iPhone or iPad.

Simply follow these steps to hide an app:

Step 1:

Open up the App Store on your device.

Step 2:

Now tap the Updates tab you see at the bottom (iPhone) or directly tap the Purchased tab (iPad).

Step 3:

Here you’ll be looking at the Purchased tab (iPhone). Simply swipe left to right on a purchased app and a red “hide” button will appear.

Step 4:

Tap that and you are done, the purchase is hidden.

And here are the steps to unhide an app:

Step 1:

Choose the Featured tab at the bottom and scroll down till you see “Apple ID“.

Step 2:

Now press View Account from the popup menu. Enter your login info when asked.

Step 3:

You’ll find Hidden Purchases button here. Press it and then tap Unhide button to make an app visible in the purchased apps list.

How To Move Newsstand Inside A Folder In iOS 5, No Jailbreak Needed

Most of us have already updated to iOS 5 on our iPhones / iPads and are very well aware of the new Newsstand feature. But some people seem to find it annoying that Newsstand which is basically a folder itself dedicated to App Store’s digital publications, can not be moved inside another folder. Luckily, a cool trick discovered by The Coding Massacre makes it possible to put Newsstand inside another folder and best of all, it doesn’t even require a jailbreak.

Simply follow the steps given below to make this work!

Step 1:

Take two apps and go to create a folder

Step 2:

The second the apps are in the folder and it’s doing the folder creation animation, drag Newsstand into the folder

Step 3:

As long as you’re quick enough Newsstand will go into the folder!

Notes:

* If you open Newsstand while it’s in a folder your springboard will crash. If you want to use Newsstand at some point just take it out of the folder and you’re good to go!

** This will also work with a folder within a folder.

Google Sync Gmail Bug: Fix for Missing Emails on iPhone

Do you use Gmail on your iPhone via the Mail app? There are two ways to setup your Gmail account: IMAP or Exchange (Google Sync). The IMAP method is rock solid in my books, but the Exchange setup results in slow loading emails. The following is a simple fix if you’re encountering missing emails on your iPhone within your Gmail Exchange (Google Sync) account.

A common mistake people make is not selecting all the labels/folders you want to be pushed to your account. It might be a good idea to go into your Mail settings and do this now if you’ve experienced issues.

1. Go to Settings–>Mail, Contacts, Calendars–>Select your Gmail Exchange account
2. Under Mail Days to Sync, select: One Month.
3. Under Mail Folders to Push, tap and select/tick as many folders/labels you want. Good ones to tick off: Inbox, Sent Mail

Now, launch your Gmail Exchange (Google Sync) account. Tap the folders you just selected to be Pushed and if you give it some time to refresh–your mail should now appear.Â Earlier today, Google updated Google SyncÂ to allow for server side search for all emails, instead of just emails stored locally.

Let me know if this works for you. I’d like to see a standalone Gmail app in the App Store. Promo codes are great: we get to try out apps for free and appreciate the work of developers. However, some people have never redeemed codes before, and I’ve been asked lots on how to do this.

The following will be a quick tutorial on how to redeem a promo code. Lots of you already know how to do this, so move on if you do.

1. Launch the App store. Tap on ‘Featured’ and scroll all the way to the bottom.

2. Tap ‘Redeem’, and enter your promo code. Tap redeem in the top right corner, done. Your app will now be downloading.

How to Track Santa on your iPhone

With Google Maps: Type in “Santa” and click search. BAM!

With Boxcar: Got to “Add a Service” and select “Santa Updates”. Click Save.

Google Maps will show you exactly where Santa is on the map, and Boxcar will send you periodic updates where Santa has arrived at. It’s a great service if you have kids or little friends/family members.

KeepItWith.Me: Transfer URLs from iPhone to Computer Faster

Do you send a lot of URLs from your iPhone to Mac/PC and vice versa? There’s an incredibly easy way to share URLs quickly, and it’s via the service KeepItWith.Me. This service will let you send/receive URLs from any device like your iPhone 4 to your Mac/PC and vice versa.

Here’s a video on what it’s all about:

How to set it up…

1) Click Get Links (you can click it now, you won’t leave)
2) Drag the ‘Send’ and ‘Receive’ links below to your bookmarks toolbar.
3) Bookmark these exact same links on your other device

The links have a unique ID so you will get different links if you just follow these same steps on your other device. You need to send these same links you see above to your other device.

To get these links on your other computer we can email you the links (optional)…

How to use it…

1) Go to the website you want to send to your smartphone or other computer
2) Click your ‘Send with KeepItWith.Me’ bookmark
3) Now on your other device click the ‘Receive with KeepItWith.Me’ bookmark

Thats it! Now you should be reading your article on your smartphone. You can also send a web page in the opposite direction (phone to computer) using the same process.

I put KeepItWith.Me to the test and it works exactly as advertised. Say I wanted to send a link from my iPhone to my MacBook Pro. First I’d load up Bookmarks and choose Send with KeepItWith.Me:

Once you choose send you’ll get a confirmation page:

Now within Firefox (or any browser) on my MacBook Pro, I just click the Receive with KeepItWith.Me bookmark and bam–the link opens in my current tab!

It takes a minute to setup KeepItWith.Me, and the instructions can seem complicated, but it’ll save you time from having to email links to yourself. Other ways to share links easily include using an app like Simplenote and a Simplenote Dashboard plugin on your Mac.
