In its most aggressive move yet to thwart jailbreakers and hackers, Apple seems to have begun banning Apple ID’s of offenders.

Late last week, it was reported that a possible unlock had been found for firmware 3.1.3 by iPhone hacker “Sherif Hashim”. A few days later, his Apple ID was disabled with the following message being displayed when attempting to use the App Store or iTunes:

This Apple ID has been disabled for security reasons.

Furthermore, iPhone hacker “iH8sn0w” also had his Apple ID disabled shortly after the first incident.

At this time, disabed Apple ID’s do not seem to be affecting every user that jailbreaks their iPhone, but it is interesting to ponder how far Apple may take this.

With the release of iPhone firmware 3.1.3, many users jumped the gun and updated causing a loss in both their jailbreak and unlock.

Tools are slowly becoming available to jailbreak the iPhone on firmware 3.1.3 however nothing has developed for an unlock on the current baseband 05.12.01 (becomes current after the 3.1.3 update).

Not being able to unlock the current baseband looks like it’s about to change as user “Sherif Hashim” has discovered an exploit which will allow the unlock of iPhone firmware 3.1.3 on the current 05.12.01 baseband.

MuscleNerd from the iPhone Dev-Team has confirmed that the exploit is legitimate and working, so it is only a matter of time before release.

Apple released firmware 3.1.3 for the iPhone and iPod Touch on Tuesday, February 2, 2010. Instantly, the Dev-Team reacted and warned everyone not to upgrade to firmware 3.1.3 if they wanted to keep their iPhone or iPod Touch Jailbroken and Unlock. Dev-Team announced today the release of Pwnage Tool 3.1.5 for Mac OS X, which enables you to preserve your Jailbreak and Unlock.

I recommend everyone to read the below posting from the Dev-Team before attempting to use PwnageTool 3.1.5 or upgrading your firmware to 3.1.3.

On Tuesday, Apple released firmware 3.1.3 for the iPhone and iPod touches.  Unless you’ve personally observed a problem with the reporting of your battery percentage, there’s no reason to update to 3.1.3.  We know some of you will want to anyway.  Superbowl Sunday’s PwnageTool 3.1.5 for Mac OS X will let you do so safely, preserving your jailbreak and ultrasn0w unlock.  (If you use the blacksn0w unlock (at baseband 05.11.07), you need to stay at 3.1.2.)

iPhone 3G and 3GS unlockers should always be very wary to update their firmware.  This is no exception.  If you make a mistake along the way you may find yourself updating to official 3.1.3 in which case you will lose your unlock, possibly forever.

iPhone 3GS users (regardless of unlock) should stay away from this and all 3.1.3 jailbreak tools unless you know you have your “SHSH hashes” backed up via Cydia.  That’s because if you make a mistake you may find yourself stuck at official 3.1.3 with no way to jailbreak or come back down to 3.1.2 to jailbreak.

If you really truly feel that you need to update, this version creates a custom 3.1.3 IPSW for you to restore to on your iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS with early bootrom, iPod touch 1G, and iPod touch 2G with early bootrom.  If you don’t know if you have an early bootrom or not, please avoid updating until you learn more.

You don’t need to be pre-jailbroken on anything but the iPod touch 2G early bootrom.  And really for that device, it’s faster and easier to use redsn0w 0.9.4 as mentioned in our last post.  For that matter, if you have an ipt1g, iphone2g, or iphone3g(and don’t need an unlock), you should use redsn0w too (but version 0.9.3).  It’s faster and you won’t have to go through a full restore process (just do an update then run redsn0w, pointing it at 3.1.2 FW instead of 3.1.3).

If you have an iPhone 3GS, PwnageTool works if you’re currently at version 3.1.2 or below (down to 3.0).  You don’t need to be already jailbroken — PwnageTool will ask you if you’re jailbroken after you’ve created the IPSW.  Don’t use PwnageTool on the iPhone 3GS if you’re at 3.1.3, it just won’t work.  Downgrade to 3.1.2 using the methods described here.  If you can’t downgrade because you don’t have your 3GS 3.1.2 hashes on file with Cydia, you’ll need to sit out the 3.1.3 jailbreak.

We aren’t revealing any new exploits to Apple with this jailbreak. Everything here has been used before, it’s just a straightforward port of Pwnage2 and 24Kpwn to the new firmware.  It’s possible the new firmware was released largely to flush out new exploits before the next big release.  We won’t be biting.

We’d really like the above warnings and disclaimers to sink in. Please don’t download the files below and use them blindly.

iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3G owners that are or have interest in Jailbreaking their device, listen up!

Today, Apple stopped signing iPhone firmware 3.1.2. What this means is that those owners of an iPhone 3GS or iPod Touch 3G who had updated to firmware 3.1.3 and who did not use Cydia to store their TSS will not be able to restore to anything but firmware 3.1.3.

With the recent firmware 3.1.3 update, many iPhone 3GS/iPod Touch 3G owners jumped the gun to 3.1.3 and have now been trying to revert back to 3.1.2 to regain their jailbreak and/or unlock. Unfortunately that will not work due to Apple no longer signing 3.1.2 firmware for iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3G hardware.

Current iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3G users of firmware 3.1.2 that want to keep jailbroken, Big Boss warns to make sure that you are very careful with what you do from now until the next jailbroken firmware. In other words, do not do anything that could potentially require your iPhone 3GS or iPod Touch 3G to need to be restored.

Big Boss recommends that users install OpenSSH and learn how to use it so that specific fixes can be performed without the need for a restore.

The iPhone Dev Team has created quite the gem with their custom iPhone firmware tool, PwnageTool. The downfall though? It is only availabe for OSX, which leaves out a huge chunk of iPhone users on the PC.

Well, Sn0wbreeze is coming to town fairly soon and it is the Windows equivalent of PwnageTool. It is being created by iH8Sn0w and he recently posted a teaser video. It’s not fully complete yet, but this will give Windows users a sense of what the GUI will be like. Check it out below:

Dev Team Updates Ultrasn0w

This morning the iPhone Dev Team released a quick update to their Ultrasn0w iPhone unlocking tool available in Cydia.

The update fixes an issue for iPhone users of firmware 3.1.2 and baseband 04.26 that left users without a carrier name in the upper left corner of the iPhone screen. The update brings Ultrasn0w to version 0.92 (from 0.91).

2.) If Cydia prompts you for updates, install them all.

3.) In Cydia, tap on the “Manage” tab at the bottom of the screen.

4.) Tap on the “Sources” button.

5.) Tap on the “Edit” button in the top right corner of the screen and then tap the “Add” button in the top left corner.

6.) Type in http://cydia.iphoneil.net and then tap “Add Source“.

7.) Now tap on the “Done” button in the top right corner of the screen.

8.) Tap on the “Search” tab on the bottom of the screen and type in “pushfix“.

9.) Select “pushfix” from the list of search results and then tap “Install” in the top right corner of the screen and then tap “Confirm“.

WiFi Fix

1.) On your iPhone home-screen, tap on the “Settings” icon.

2.) In the Settings menu, tap on “General“. Scroll to the bottom of the General menu.

3.) In the General menu, tap on “Reset“. Then tap “Reset Network Settings“.

4.) Reboot your iPhone/iPod Touch by holding down the sleep/wake button and sliding to turn off.

What is ‘Jailbreaking’?

Jailbreaking is a term used that refers to modifying the software on your iPhone/iPod Touch. These modifications essentially “free” your device from the device constraints and allow you to do functions such as applying custom wallpapers, changing the way the icons look, modifying text message tones, changing the device sounds, and about 1 million other things. The list is endless. The image below is an example of what you can do with a jailbroken iPhone/iPod Touch:

Jailbreaking is accomplished by using programs such as ‘redsn0w’ (listed below). Once you do jailbreak however, it is not permanent. At any time you can restore your iPhone/iPod Touch to factory defaults and return the device back to ‘normal’. However until you do the restore, your device will stay jailbroken. Also, it goes without saying that this voids your warranty, but when you restore to factory defaults, the traces of jailbreaking are usually cleaned up.

What is ‘Unlocking’?

The wireless carriers in Canada, such as Rogers and Fido, put “carrier locks” on their devices. What this does is prevent you from using the device on another wireless network. For example, you cannot take a Rogers device and put a Fido SIM card into it and vice versa.

Using similar methods to jailbreaking, one can unlock their iPhone. This allows you to “free” your device and allows the user to put any SIM card into the device. For example, if you unlock your Rogers iPhone, you can now put a Fido SIM in, or AT&T or O2 or whoever.

Unlocking is accomplished by using programs such as ‘ultrasn0w’ (listed below). Once you do the unlock however, it is not permanent. At any time you can restore your iPhone to factory defaults and return the device back to ‘normal’. However until you do the restore, your device will stay unlocked. Also, it goes without saying that this voids your warranty, but when you restore to factory defaults, the traces of the unlock are usually cleaned up.

Before we begin, please take some time to review the notes below as they are very important:

- The methods listed below can be followed on BOTH a PC or a Mac

- Your iPhone/iPod Touch must be updated to firmware 3.1.2 via iTunes before beginning this process.

- For users that already have a jailbroken device and want to keep their jailbroken apps, before you begin the process below, download “AptBackup” from Cydia and back up your jailbroken apps. Now connect your device to iTunes and backup your device using the iTunes backup process. After you do the jailbreak process below, redownload AptBackup from Cydia and plug your device into your computer. Using AptBackup, restore your apps.

1.) How To Jailbreak and Unlock the iPhone 2G on 3.1.2 Firmware

To jailbreak and/or unlock your iPhone 2G on the 3.1.2 firmware and so you can put in your Rogers/Fido SIM card (or any other carrier SIM), follow the steps below:

How to Jailbreak the iPhone 2G

1.) Plug your iPhone into iTunes, do a backup and then click “Update” to install firmware 3.1.2. After the update, eject your iPhone from iTunes using the “eject” button and close iTunes. Leave your iPhone connected to your computer.

2.) Click on the PC or Mac links to download Blackra1n for PC or MAC. Save the file to your computer desktop.

3.) Locate the downloaded file “Blackra1n” and double-click on it.

4.) Your iPhone will now enter into Recovery Mode. If iTunes opens, simply close it.

5.) After the reboot, Blackra1n will indicate that your iPhone has been jailbroken. Click “OK”. You can also close Blackra1n now if it is still open.

6.) Once at your iPhone home-screen, go to Settings > WiFi and turn on WiFi.

7.) On your iPhone home-screen, you will see a new Blackra1n icon. Tap on it.

8.) When Blackra1n opens, tap on Cydia (or Rock) and tap “Install” in the top right corner.

9.) Cydia (or Rock) will now be visible on your iPhone home-screen. Your iPhone is now Jailbroken.

How to Unlock the iPhone 2G

1.) On your iPhone home-screen, tap on the Blackra1n icon.

2.) In the Blackra1n app, tap on “Cydia” to install Cydia. (If you already installed Cydia, move to Step 3)

3.) Cydia will prompt you for updates. Tap on “Complete Upgrade” and install them all.

4.) In Cydia, search for the app “BootNeuter” and install the app.

5.) Open BootNeuter and make sure the settings match the image below:

6.) When the settings match the above image, tap on “Flash” in the top right corner. The iPhone 2G will now be unlocked.

Note: You may go back into the Blackra1n app on your home-screen and use the Uninstall toggle to remove the Blackra1n app from your home-screen. This does not affect the jailbreak or unlock.

2.) How To Jailbreak and Unlock the iPhone 3G/3GS on 3.1.2 Firmware

To jailbreak and/or unlock your iPhone 3G/3GS on the 3.1.2 firmware and so you can put in your Rogers/Fido SIM card (or any other carrier SIM), follow the steps below:

Note: You may go back into the Blackra1n app on your home-screen and use the Uninstall toggle to remove the Blackra1n app from your home-screen. This does not affect the jailbreak or unlock.

3.) How To Unlock the iPhone 3G/3GS if you are already Jailbroken and running Baseband 05.11.07

1.) On your iPhone home-screen, tap on the Cydia icon.

2.) If Cydia prompts you for updates, install them all.

3.) In Cydia, tap on the “Manage” tab at the bottom.

4.) Tap on the “Sources” button.

5.) Tap on the “Edit” button in the top right corner of the screen and then tap the “Add” button in the top left corner.

6.) Type in http://www.blackra1n.com and then tap “Add Source“.

7.) Now tap on the “Done” button in the top right corner of the screen.

8.) Tap on “blackra1n” from the “Sources” List under the “Manage” tab.

9.) Select “blacksn0w” from the list of packages and then tap “Install” in the top right corner of the screen and then tap “Confirm“.

10.) After the unlock is installed, tap on “Return to Cydia“. Your iPhone is now unlocked.

4.) How To Jailbreak the iPod Touch on 3.1.2 Firmware

To jailbreak your iPod Touch on the 3.1.2 firmware, follow the steps below:

How to Jailbreak the iPod Touch

1.) Plug your iPod Touch into iTunes, do a backup and then click “Update” to install firmware 3.1.2. After the update, eject your iPod Touch from iTunes using the “eject” button and close iTunes. Leave your iPod Touch connected to your computer.

2.) Click on the PC or Mac links to download Blackra1n for PC or MAC. Save the file to your computer desktop.

3.) Locate the downloaded file “Blackra1n” and double-click on it.

4.) Your iPod Touch will now enter into Recovery Mode. If iTunes opens, simply close it.

5.) After the reboot, Blackra1n will indicate the your iPod Touch has been jailbroken. Click “OK”. You can also close Blackra1n now if it is still open.

6.) Once at your iPod Touch home-screen, go to Settings > WiFi and turn on WiFi.

7.) On your iPod Touch home-screen, you will see a new Blackra1n icon. Tap on it.

8.) When Blackra1n opens, tap on Cydia (or Rock) and tap “Install” in the top right corner.

9.) Cydia (or Rock) will now be visible on your iPod Touch home-screen. Your iPhone is now Jailbroken.

Note: You may go back into the Blackra1n app on your home-screen and use the Uninstall toggle to remove the Blackra1n app from your home-screen. This does not affect the jailbreak.

5.) How To Revert Your iPhone 2G/3G/3GS or iPod Touch Back To “Normal”

So you have Jailbroken or Unlocked (or both) your iPhone 2G/3G/3GS or iPod Touch but now you want to revert to the factory fresh iPhone 2G/3G/3GS or iPod Touch. To do so, follow the steps below:

1.) Open iTunes and plug your iPhone 2G/3G/3GS or iPod Touch in via the USB. Backup your iPhone/iPod Touch if iTunes allows you to.

2.) When iTunes recognizes the iPhone/iPod Touch, click on the “Restore” button in iTunes. This will restore your iPhone/iPod Touch with fresh 3.1.2 firmware.

3.) After the restore is complete, iTunes will prompt you to Set up a New Device or Restore from Back Up from an existing backup (the backup from step 1). Choose which ever method you want and let iTunes process.

4.) After the processing is complete, your iPhone/iPod Touch will be loaded with the fresh 3.1.2 firmware or loaded with your back up that you may have chosen.

5.) Eject the iPhone/iPod Touch from iTunes using the “eject” button and disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone/iPod Touch. Turn the iPhone/iPod Touch off and then turn the iPhone/iPod Touch back on.

So far I have successfully jailbroken my iPod Touch 2G and jailbroken/unlocked my iPhone 2G and iPhone 3G.

If you are a loyal blackra1n user who kept the blackra1n.app on your iPhone, run it. You will see Icy replaced by an option “ra1n”. Install this to upgrade your app. After upgrading, run blackra1n.app again. You will see “sn0w”. Install this, and enjoy your unlocked iPhone.

If you are new to the scene, just looking for an unlock, finally ready to upgrade to 3.1.2 and the accompanying baseband, willing to restore for the latest and greatest, or stuck on the “Connect to iTunes” screen, you are in luck. Jailbreaking and unlocking have never been easier. Go to blackra1n.com, click on the logo corresponding to your operating system, run the app, and click “make it ra1n”. When your phone reboots, you’ll see blackra1n.app. Run this, install blacksn0w, and enjoy your unlocked iPhone.

If you jailbroke using pwnage or deleted your blackra1n.app, you are in luck too. Sometime later in the sn0wday, blacksn0w will be added to Cydia, and instructions will be posted here.
