Ultrasn0w 1.2.5 iPhone Unlock Updated for iOS 5.0.1

The iPhone Dev Team has released an update to the iPhone unlock ultrasn0w, version 1.2.5 to support older basebands in iOS 5.0.1., as described in the description:

iPhone Dev Team’s iPhone 4, 3G, and 3GS software unlock, now with added PwnApple. Compatible with iPhone 4 baseband 01.59.00 and iPhone 3G/3GS basebands 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, 05.13.04 and 06.15.00! Thanks to @sherif_hashim and @Oranav for contributing baseband crashes.

redsn0w 0.9.9b9d Download Now Available

The iPhone Dev Team has released a new version of redsn0w to assist iPhone 3GS users with old bootroms and the untethered jailbreak:

Update #17d: iPhone3GS owners in our comments section below noticed a problem with the untethered jailbreak available for the old-bootrom 3GS. We’ve corrected that problem in 0.9.9b9d. If you have an old-bootrom 3GS and have already used last night’s redsn0w on it, you can re-run it again without losing anything. Just use this new version, go to Extras->IPSW and manually select the 5.0.1 IPSW, then go back and Jailbreak it again (but you can uncheck Cydia because it’s already installed).

This is still a tethered jailbreak for all except old-bootrom 3GS users.

iPhone 4S Unlock in Progress and ‘Very Promising’ According to Dev Team

Muscle Nerd from the iPhone Dev Team sent out an interesting tweet this morning in regards to the iPhone 4S unlock.

Crazy Thanksgiving weekend! Very promising 4S unlock (http://twitpic.com/7kku4t) is in the works (Not i4, just 4S..that’s crazy part)

He mentions progress is coming along for the iPhone 4S only via ultrasn0w. Only iPhone 4 users with the baseband 01.59.00 can unlock their phones at this moment.

As for iPhone 3G and 3GS users, only the following basebands can be unlocked: 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, 05.13.04, and 06.15.00.

It seems every time there’s a long weekend or holiday the iPhone Dev Team discovers a new exploit somehow. Last Thanksgiving, they unveiled news about the iOS 4.2.1 untethered jailbreak via an updated release of redsn0w. Maybe turkey dinners are the secret to discovering iPhone and iOS exploits?

Dev-Team Releases Ultrasn0w 1.2.4, Unlock Your iPhone 4 / iPhone 3GS On iOS 5 Now

Yesterday, @MuscleNerd gave us a heads up for today’s Ultrasn0w update which has just gone live on Cydia. The latest update to Dev-Team’s carrier unlocking tool is Ultrasn0w 1.2.4 which is now fully compatible with iOS 5.

Those who have updated to iOS 5 using a custom .IPSW file created with recent Redsn0w version can use the latest Ultrasn0w to unlock the following supported basebands on iPhone 3G/3Gs/4:

01.59.00
04.26.08
05.11.07
05.12.01
05.13.04
06.15.00

Before you proceed, take a look at these important instructions by Dev-Team:

Note: there’s a special “trick” that iPhone3GS owners with baseband 06.15 need for iOS5. During the new setup screens you see when you start iOS5 for the first time, you’ll be asked about Location Services. Be sure to select “Disable Location Services” when asked! Later on in the setup, you’ll have the chance to turn on Location Services again when asked if you want to use “Find my iPhone”. It’s fine to turn it back on at that point, if that’s your desire (or you can always go in and enable it in Settings.app).

Also, some iPhone3GS users with the 06.15 baseband may have tried to install iOS5 using a stock IPSW (even though you should never ever try to use a stock IPSW if you’re an ultrasn0w unlocker). If you did try this, your baseband is probably in an inconsistent state, and you’ll need to reflash the 06.15 baseband again (using redsn0w). Be very careful if you use redsn0w to reflash the iPad baseband — don’t interrupt the process! And please avoid using stock IPSWs in the future Unlockers should never go near stock IPSWs.

MuscleNerd Confirms UltraSn0w Unlock For iOS 5 Will Be Released Tomorrow

All those who are holding back on iOS 5 update on their iPhones just because they rely on an ultrasn0w carrier unlock, it’s time to cheer up! MuscleNerd of Dev-Team has just tweeted that iOS 5 compatible ultrasn0w unlock is going to be released tomorrow. So if you preserve your current unlock-able baseband and update to iOS 5 using custom .IPSW creation feature in latest redsn0w 0.9.9.5b (download from here for Mac), then this will work just fine for you.

Apple Lists Rogers, Fido and SaskTel as Authorized iPhone Unlockers

In December of 2010 we wrote about Rogers/Fido and their new device unlocking policy, which included the iPhone at the end of your contract. After paying a $50 unlocking fee, the process happens via iTunes, as we detailed. Telus introduced a new device unlocking policy in November of last year, but it did not detail if it included the iPhone or not.

Apple’s iPhone support document page clearly details which “Carrier offers authorized unlocking”. Out of seven official iPhone carriers that list, only three are listed as authorized to unlock your iPhone: Rogers, Fido and SaskTel.

If you consider the money spent in your contract over the duration of three years, you would think your device would be unlocked for free, instead of paying yet another fee. It’s no wonder more and more people now choose to order factory unlocked iPhones from Apple to avoid device upgrade headaches year after year. Let alone a factory unlocked iPhone is the envy of the world.

The chart also lists which carriers lock their iPhones, offer Visual Voicemail, MMS, and Personal Hotspot.

AT&T and Verizon in the U.S. are listed, but they do not offer device unlocking. Our neighbours down south will be able to purchase factory unlocked iPhone 4S units in November, whereas Canada was able to pre-order unlocked units right on October 7th.

The iPhone 4S is set to debut on October 14th, with Canadian pre-orders already shipping. The iPhone 4S has already exceeded 1 million pre-orders in 24 hours for Apple, a new record.

Untethered Jailbreak/Unlock Now Available For iOS 4.3.3

If your iDevice (except iPad 2) is jailbroken or unlocked, it is now safe to update to iOS 4.3.3. The iPhone dev team has confirmed that iOS 4.3.3 is still vulnerable to the untethered jailbreak exploit that @i0n1c created for 4.3.1.

This morning, PwnageTool and redsn0w have been updated and will jailbreak iOS 4.3.3 on the following devices, as described in the Dev Team’s blog postÂ “tic tac toe”:

iPhone3GS
iPhone4 (GSM)
iPod touch 3G
iPod touch 4G
iPad1
AppleTV2G (v4.3Â 8F202)

If you need just a jailbreak, and have Windows or Mac, use redsn0w.

If you need a jailbreak with an unlock, and have a Mac, use PwnageTool to retain your baseband. For those who unlock, Ultrasn0w has also been updated, but Ultrasn0w only supports older basebands on iOS 4.3.3 (users who have been using PwnageTool in the before).

[Update] Ultrasn0w iPhone Unlock Update for iOS 4.3.1 Coming Today

Update 1: MuscleNerd just sent out the following tweet:

ultrasn0w unlockers remember: please stay away until we get a chance to fix the problems 4.3.1 has with older basebands

So if you’re thinking of using the latest ultrasn0w update, my advice is to wait at least 24-72 hours before proceeding, as it’s a guarantee that new versions will be released with bug fixes.

On top of redsn0w being released today by the iPhone Dev Team, MuscleNerd just announced an update to the ultrasn0w unlock will be released as well (hopefully, he says). This doesn’t unlock new basebands, only the existing ones.

The current version, ultrasn0w 1.2, will unlock the following up to iOS 4.2.1:

iPhone 4 baseband:
- 01.59.00
iPhone 3G/3GS basebands:
- 04.26.08
- 05.11.07
- 05.12.01
- 05.13.04
- 06.15.00
If you don’t have one of the above basebands, it cannot be unlocked right now.

The ultrasn0w update won’t be a new unlock. MuscleNerd explains iOS 4.3.1 breaks the current ultrasn0w unintentionally, and that the basebands it unlocks remains unchanged. The core payload of ultrasn0w has stayed the same since yellowsn0w days, but injection methods have just changed.

According to iDB, redsn0w and PwnageTool will be released at midnight PST, or GMT-8 tonight.

Dev Team: iPhone 4 Unlock Delayed

If you’ve been patiently waiting for the iPhone 4 unlock for Basebands other than 01.59.00, the Dev Team has some bad news.

According to a recent tweet from Dev Team member MuscleNerd, it is taking longer than expected to get the unlock:

Sorry, there’s no news on the i4 unlock for those who lost 01.59 (or never had it). It’s taking longer than we wanted

With Apple releasing iOS 4.3 today, the Dev Team may have encountered new problems with the unlock. Keep holding on everyone!

iPhone Dev Team: iPhone 4 Unlock Coming That Supports Basebands Until 04.10.01

Previously, the iPhone Dev-Team stated that the unlock for iPhone 4 would not be released until after iOS 4.3 went public. While the release date for iOS 4.3 is unknown, Apple could release the upcoming firmware this Wednesday as part of the March 2nd iPad event.

Today, the iPhone Dev-Team has announced that they plan to release an unlock for the iPhone 4 that supports basebands until 04.10.01 (iOS 4.3 beta 3). This includes the Basebands present in iOS 4.2.1.

Current i4 unlock goal includes til 04.10.01 (4.3b3). Very weird situation…vuln cmds are there, trying to invoke them!

MuscleNerd further notes that the Dev Team may have found the unlock for the 05.14 and 05.15 Basebands on the iPhone 3G/3GS while searching for the iPhone 4 unlock. This is great news for 3G/3GS owners!

Of course, as always, if you want the best jailbreak experience and want to keep an unofficial unlock possible for your device, do not update to the latest iOS firmware until it is reported safe to do so!

Telus To Unlock Devices Beginning February 15 For $50

This week, Telus announced that the wireless company will be unlocking their IDEN/HSPA+ devices as of February 15, 2011 for a $50 fee.

At first glance, this seems similar to the Rogers/Fido unlocking policy, but there is one major difference. The Telus unlocking policy is more flexible, not requiring customers to be on their contract for the full three year term before allowing the unlock.

Device unlocking applies to TELUS postpaid SIM -based devices that operate on the Telus IDEN and HSPA+ postpaid networks and meet the following conditions:

The device must be in post-paid (paying a monthly bill or on a contract. Not a Pay and Talk customer) status for a minimum of 90 days.
The device must be in post-paid status for a minimum of 90 days.
The last three (3) consecutive bills must have been paid in full.
The account cannot be delinquent.
The account must in an active status.
Agree to $50 unlock fee applied and billed to clients account.

Also, the initial eligible device list will not include the iPhone, but it is in the pipeline.

Remember that this policy does not void your contract. Paying $50 just unlocks the device, but the contract will remain. Having the device unlocked provides users with more flexibility in terms of choosing a wireless carrier when traveling, for example.

So far, the major carriers, such as Rogers, Fido, and Telus, all have an unlocking policy, with Telus being the most lucrative for customers. At this time, Bell has not said if it too will have an unlocking policy.
