ZAGG invisibleSHIELD iPhone 3G Review: How to Install & CONTEST!!!

by Gary on July 26th, 2008

The invisibleSHIELD has a long standing reputation as one of the premier screenprotectors for electronics out there. When I managed to get my hands on a sample for my first gen iPhone, I wasn’t sure what to think. I had heard about them before but never really tried them out.

After seeing the positive results of the invisibleSHIELD on my first generation (read my review here), I was excited to test out the same product on my iPhone 3G. I am patiently waiting for another iPhone 3G that is in transit from Rogers due to my current iPhone’s inconsistent battery. BUT…today I managed to do a flawless install on my friend’s similar 8GB iPhone 3G!

invisibleSHIELD iPhone 3G Full Body Protector Review: What’s in the Box? What is it?

This time around ZAGG has made some minor changes to the interior of the invisibleSHIELD packaging. The squeegee is included still, along with the mild soap solution spray (which is in a new color), along with a 20% off coupon (the smart ones will click on the thumbnail, hint hint!), plus the lifetime warranty card.

For those who are not familiar with the invisibleSHIELD, you’re basically applying thin plastic sheets onto your iPhone. These unpenetrable sheets formerly were used on US military helicopter blades. That primed them for today’s gadgets, which in this case is my friend’s lucky iPhone 3G. I’m going to give you guys pointers on how to do the PERFECT install. This was my second install and I must say I’ve getting the hang of it!

How to Do the Perfect invisibleSHIELD iPhone 3G Install Job

Before you start, find yourself a good chunk of time. You don’t want to rush during this install. I’d say 1 hour would be enough for a job well done.

1. Turn off iPhone 3G. Wipe the iPhone down with a cloth to remove oil, dust, and dirt. Find a large clean surface. Lay out some paper towels.

2. Have the invisibleSHIELD front and back sheets ready to be peeled. Have the spray and squeegee ready.
3. Spray down fingers. Next, spray the front of the iPhone liberally. I’m talking soaking the front until you see large beads of water. Don’t worry, you won’t wreck the device! This is a crucial step. Look at how wet the iPhone 3G is here:

4. Slowly peel the front piece first. As you’re peeling away, spray the front piece as this will help prevent dust from clinging to the sticky side.
5. Lay down the front piece on the iPhone 3G. Since you’ve sprayed so much water, this gives you the ability to move and align the shield so that is perfect. Tear off a small corner of the paper towel and use this to squeegee out the excess water. As it squeegees out, the towel will soak up the water.
6. I like to use the rubber squeegee to take out tiny bubbles that my paper towel couldn’t do. Remember to press LIGHTLY as you don’t want to stretch the shield.

7. Repeat steps 3 to 6 for the back of the iPhone 3G. Use the hole for the camera to help you align the sheet, then move it accordingly to ensure you have enough froom for the sleep/wake button, silent switch, and volume rocker. Make sure the back is smooth before moving onto the corners/bezel. Once again, take a look at how wet the iPhone is:

8. CORNERS/SIDE BEZEL: This is where it can get tricky. These areas require the most time and patience for the perfect install. Press down on the corner pieces and hold for a solid minute or two with your thumb. If it’s not sticking, that means there’s too much water. Just hold down and use the heat from your fingers to “cure” the corners. Repeat for the sides of the bezel. You know you’ve done a good job when you don’t see any air bubbles and only black–like it’s INVISIBLE!

9. Stick the round “home” dot on your home button.
10. Let iPhone 3G sit for the invisibleSHIELD to cure. ZAGG recommends 24 hours. I would say give it at least 3-4 hours minimum for it to set. You don’t want to handle the iPhone at this point. Just let it be!
11. VOILA! The job is finished and your iPhone 3G is sitting pretty, ready for the elements! This was a fabulous install by yours truly. Here are the “after” shots:

Conclusion: Is the invisibleSHIELD for me? Why should I consider investing in one?

A lot of people don’t like these plastic shields on their iPhones. They find that it can reduce the sensitivity and functionality of the touchscreen. For me, I did not find any difference in the touch capabilities after installing the invisibleSHIELD. I’ve had one on my first generation for almost a year and everything works great to this very day. Some ask about how the invisibleSHIELD makes the iPhone screen look “bumpy” when viewed off on the side. It’s not that big of a deal and does not come up when you’re looking at the screen and it’s ON.

The invisibleSHIELD might be for you, or it might not. Some people like cases for their naked iPhone 3G, which is great. However, by using an invisibleSHIELD coupled with a nice case, you are taking protection to another level. You won’t have to worry about getting your precious Jesus-phone scratched. The invisibleSHIELD will allow you to sleep at night–don’t worry, your baby (aka the iPhone 3G) will be safe. Rest easy!

One of the best parts of owning an invisibleSHIELD is the 30 day moneyback guarantee and lifetime replacement warranty. Sure, order an invisibleSHIELD and try it out. Don’t like it? Quit crying and get a full refund already! You have nothing to lose but protection on your iPhone 3G. Also, on my first generation iPhone the corners started to peel after struggling to remove the phone from a tight fitting leather case. ZAGG sent me another shield as requested and I only had to pay the shipping.

Don’t take my word on the invisibleSHIELD. Some love it and some don’t, but the majority of users who have installed it properly with care are the ones who appreciate it. Take your time to install it–it’ll pay off. Check out my gallery below to make your own decision. Good luck!

Haha I could really use the shield because I already got a scratch on it the first day. About an inch long on the middle of the back. An InvisibleSHIELD would prevent further mishaps.. Thanks!
  • I'm looking for something to protect my new 16 gig black iPhone 3G and was going to go out and buy something, but free sounds much better.
  • I'm still waiting to get the ones I've ordered so I think I'm worthy! =)
  • Anthony
Well hopefully this will help with my greasy face and fingerprints all over my iPhone. Hate having to constantly wipe it after each use.
  • Afif tabish
hey, I am writing this using my iphone 3g and I would type faster knowing that I would be protected by invisible shield incase my phone fell. It and my iPhone would fall in love. I am going to blog about this for 5 more points, just check my websites tech blog soon and it will be there.
  • Greg
I'm one of those that is a bit skeptical about plastic shields -- but am willing to be surprised. That is, if you send me the contest prize!!
  • Justin
Well I would like to get a invisible Shield ld because I got the white version iPhone and for some reason, my phone case inner black fabric seems to rub off and I get so paranoid that I have to put a business card between the fabric and back of phone. I would constantly check the white back and see if it gets discolored. So I think the invisible shield will put me in peace.
  • LoWd0Wn
Loved the shield for my 1st gen iphone and would love to win one for the 3G that I am waiting for.
  • My buddy ordered Invisible Shields for his iPod Touch, camera and Blackberry, and did a great job installing them on each. He loves them, and appreciates the protection and the feel (slightly more grip-able, but no less function) each device now has. Check out my blog for more!
  • John
I have always been a Windows Mobile user, just picked up and converted to an iPhone and really starting to love it!!! It took some getting use to as it is very different from WinMo but it is a wonderful product!!! Just recently had my first baby and would rather save the extra few dollars for Formula, so it would be great if I won one for my new 3G iPhone!!!

Awesome site by the way...it really helped me learn alot as a iPhone rookie!
  • Joseph
I have heard people complain that it doesn't fit right. They also said that it doesn't cover the chrome bezel. What is your take on this?
  • Marc
    iPhone Fan is super badass!
  • Mathieu
I want one ! My iPhone is in the mail from Fido ! I want the real deal, not just some lame ass skin. InvisibleShield 4 ever !
  • 1. I should get the InvisibleSHIELD because I'm asking politely.
    2. It says 30 day guarantee, but if you screw up the installation, aren't you dead in the water. Does this come off easily or with effort but zero damage? I want one and will most likely buy one, but I'm afraid I'll screw up the installation. Would I be able to take it off and try again, or have the SHIELD destroyed but salvage the phone. Is there a place I can get it done for me?

    Thanks
  • rox
guys, you have no chance. Listen to my reason why it should be me. I'm camping right now in a small tent with 11 month daughter and my wife. It has been raining all night and morning so far with heavy thundestorm. My wife is sleeping right now and I take care of my little one with my other hand since I'm typing on my iPhone 3G with the other (this message of course). Why I should get it... Well with an 11 month my iPhone need to me protected and the other reason is that I've ordered my shield over a month ago and nothing... Not even a reply from their customer service after my wonderings. So no doing that this an awesome product, I've used it before, but I expect that by the time i'll received mine my iPhone would already been scratched. Slow delivery is a real shame foe invisible shield. Come on, I've got my iPhone since the 11th amy order for the shield was place in the 3rd week of June.
  • Quicken
I think I should win the case because I am the most clumsiest guy in Canada. My last phone had an unfortunate drop from my 8th story appartment balcony. So I took advantage of my hardware upgrade and got my new iphone 3g! I don't know if the invisibleSHIELD will protect me from that, but hopefully from my constant drops, sliding across my kitchen floor, or maybe being backed over by a '99 Honda Acord. Let's hope I win! If not, I'll gladly dish out 24.99 anyway.
  • Jon Tanner
I need the invisible shield because keys scare my iPhone. And coins.....and the metal zipper on all my bags. Don't forget about that small metal part by your jeans pockets - that's dangerous!
  • iGuy
I think that I may deserve the invisibleSHIELD because TOMORROW I am flying to St. Jean Quebec to start basic training, and I have no protection for my iPhone!!! I'm proud to start serving this great, iPhone blessed, Canadian country... help protect it while doing my duty!
  • rawr42
I should win an ishield beccause I work at a beach and sand scratches are the worst.
  • skyngai
My friends and I got/will be getting iphone and we need about 8 skins. For what I am seeing I really want to convince them to buy invisibleshield, but the price is too high compare to other brand. If only I have one on my hand so that I can show them and compare it to other cheaper brand, I believe I can convince them to buy IS because the quality is just different.
  • Thom Anthony
I don't currently use the invisibleSHIELD, but am considering it seriously. I like everything about the invisibleSHIELD. It is amazing material, and I like the look it put's on a phone screen. It even mitigates the finger prints on the screen. One question though. If you ever want to remove it does it come off the screen cleanly? Does it leave any residue? I guess I'm concerned about permanent damage to the screen. Anyone know?
  • Johnny_Fresh
I purchased a Zagg shield for my HTC Touch (which I traded back for an IPhone 3G, thank God) and was able to remove the plastic shield with no problems. I was actually surprised how it could stick so well yet be removed without excessive force; I could almost re-use it, but it got slightly stretched. The screen itself was immaculate and the Roger's manager actually asked me if I had even used the phone at all before returning it...
  • Aaron Ryan
Does the iPhone still fit nicely into the dock with the invisibleSHIELD on it? Any risk of peeling the shield placing it in the dock?
  • T
YOU KNOW.. I can't handle this.. I look at it this way- by signing a deal with the devil.. oops I mean rogers..you would figure the phone would last 3 years, no protection whatsoever .. like the invisible force that surrounds Superman, making bullets simply bounce off of his chest..
What's reality though- the devil... oops I mean rogers didn't give a rats a$$ that this amazing new device might be scratched before even leaving the STORE ;)
Ahh, since I don't know superman maybe a invisible shield would be the next best thing... I had pondered purchasing said item BUT the devil...oops i mean rogers
had a forked tail in my wallet... oh ok oh,ah a little more to the left..there you go, hey where's all my $ gone?...wait a minute, am I married to rogers now?
  • Tony
I deserve to win the InvisibleShield because I am too paranoid about scratches on my iPhone, and with an IS my worries would be put to rest forever! :)

@ Quicken: An InvisibleShield wouldn't protect your phone from any of those except maybe the sliding acros the floor. lol
  • bc
I deserve to win the InvisibleShield because Rogers _still_ won't let me upgrade to iPhone 3G because their corporate HUP dept is so disorganized and clueless and they give me a different answer every time I call, even though I'm eligible for an upgrade. So, when I win the InvisibleShield I can cut out the picture of the iPhone on the box and carry it around with me, in case I have to go to a party and don't want to be conspicuously without an iPhone, unlike everyone else in the city. It will be a small consolation while I wait. and wait. and wait...
  • Thanks for entering everyone! :)

Aaron: Yes, the shield still fits in the dock. My first gen had no peeling issues due to taking it in and out of the dock. If it peels, just get replacement!

Thom Anthony: The shield's spray on stuff is a mild soap solution. It can come off easily and will not damage the iPhone.
  • Maxime Scrocca
    well cpunt me in
  • MK
How do you take the shield off if you don't like it?
  • MMM
when i decided to get an iphone, i wanted an iphone, and not a phone in a in a silicone case. I don't want to cover up the phone. I don't want to make it twice as thick. I don't want to drop it into a slip case. The iphone is beautiful as is. If i wanted it to look like another phone, why not just get another phone?

With the invisibleSHIELD i can keep my (expensive) gadget safe and scratch proof while retaining it in all its original glory.
  • Jody Rideout
I dropped my first gen iPhone on Pavement, the 3rd day I had it, marked up the bezel a bit, but the glass was good...until I was cleaning it and probably rubbed some swirls in the glass with metal bits from the bezel.

The new iPhone is still pristine, but I dropped it the other day onto a floor with dust and rocks....my heart jumped, but its still good. As my gf says though,"You just rough things up."

Don't I need an invisible shield? (The answer is Yes)

If you have any pull with the Zagg people, is it possible to make the shield in the shape of a tight fitting bag with only holes for the things you need access to and then slide a wet phone in the dock hole, squeegee and voila, ultimate protection. (I'm not even sure you need holes for the volume or sleep button)

Great product btw, my sis, and friends think its great.
  • Trent Fehr
Now that I have an iPhone, I'm anxious to try out an invisible shield. I read your review of the 1st gen iPhone invisible shield, and thought that this would be perfect. I hate bulky cases, so a super strong, super thin coating sounds like exactly the kind of thing I need.
Why do I deserve one? My iPhone doubles as a babysitter on long road trips. I hand it over to my 3-yr old son so he can watch cartoons while I'm driving. I need all the extra protection I can get!
  • Momin
I think i need this invisibleSHIELD to protect my almost her white iPhone :) (Hopefully it arrives soon)
  • Ilya
I use my iPhone lots and need to protect it. Shield please
  • Andrew
i think i should win because i am spending all of my money just to pay the monthly bill of this wonderful phone and i cant afford it every month i have about 5 dollars in spending money! i NEED this case because i rarely drop things but i always end up scratching my stuff.
  • gmoney
I would love an InvisibleShield since I bought a white iphone and the current case I have on it is black. The real reason stems from my wife slagging me by saying "You wanted the white iphone but it is covered up. What's the point?" She does have a good point there, but with the see-through beauty of the IVS I would be ready to show off the iphone to the world.
  • Drewgo
I should win as I just got my phone yesterday in Vancouver and have signed 3 years of my life over to Rogers, and I'm sure they're taking my right kidney as well.... You really gotta read that small print :-)
  • Bud Colby
I don't think I should win the I.S. because I already have one on order, and why pray tell do I need two. Things would be different if this was before I ordered one. The reason for my message is to inform you of the virtues/shortfalls of the I.S. I also have been a long time WinMo user. My last HP ipaq's have been I.S. Protected, my iPods (including my current 160 gb classic), and my PSP Slim all entirely I.S. Protected. I just love the product. There are though a few things that one know and accept. Detain products become difficult to use after install, which is not a problem if you are aware before you attach the I.S. An armband such as the one I puchased for my ipod classic became to difficult to use as the two vinyls do not slide against each other. Use of exact fitting hard shell cases, in most cases, will not work ifthe case is a perfect fit to begin with. These issues may lead you to believe that I am being negatve about the product. As I said, I love I.S. You should just know the product does ha e a certain thickness to it, and does add some cushion and grip, and this adding limitations. Hope this helps some.
  • Eric Mailloux
Hey I have a raincheck right now for a Itouch does this product work for that as well? I could really use a invisible shield because i work in manufacturing and all my prior ipods are all scratched up lol.

    Well goodluck everyone
  • Bud Colby
The one that fits the iPhone will not do for the Touch, sorry.
  • John
The opportunity of getting an InvisibleShield for free is great! I have been using the InvisibleShield for the last year on my iTouch and previous iPhone. I bought 7 of these things just to have extras for whatever the reason or occasion I would need them. I ended up given about four away to my buddies when they bought themselves the iTouch or iPhone to let them know how excellent and durable the shield really is compared to other products out there. In an indirect way, I have been promoting the product at a bit of a cost to myself and also for being a good friend to them. And thats why I thinkI am worthy of gettiing one for free is a very worthy reason.

    Thanks
  • Lukasz
Well I got a 1st gen. iPhone back in Sept. , and i was using it without a case until i got my first scratch. As soon as I got home I ordered Best Skins Ever (Learned about it here). I made the wrong choice because after a couple of months it started to peel. I should of got the invisible shield because it has a lifetime warranty! Because it started to peel I took the back part off. About a week later it slipped out of my hand because there was very little grip and the screen cracked. I am going to buy the iPhone 3g in a couple of weeks and I want to have the protection the moment I use it. With the invisible shield it's good to know you can get a free replacement if anything happens.

    Thanks
  • Nelson
would be great to had some decent and well known protection for my new iPhone. I had it for all my old iPods and they performed well.
  • Bob
Wants the point of nice sleek iPhone if you have to load it up with a case or screen or holder? I deserve the IS because it allows me to show off the iPhone 3G in its total glory.
  • Hicham
    Looks great !
  • jordan
I really need one of these for my iphone when I'm using it at work in the O.R. With blood, tissue, bone fragments, and other potentially iphone-wrecking debris often flying through the air, it would be a shame to leave my shiny new 'life-saving device' unprotected.
  • chase
    can it be for an ipod touch? i bought one instead of an iphone... lulz if not enter me anyways.. and ill give it to my douchebag of a freind who signed his life away...~_~;
  • Charles J.
I think I'm worthy of the Zagg invisibleshield because it is my duty to make sure that all iPhone 3G's out there are protected from dirt, scratches, the joker, evil, anything that could potentially endanger its life. The invisibleshield is so good that it will also protect the 3G from cancer.
  • Yohann
Id like to have one as my phone is sitting in a magic glove from the dollar store and the closest invisibleSHIELD is in Toronto (2 hr drive) not that its not worth it... but if you can save a headache!

    Thank you!
  • Stephen Froom
Would love to try this out! My iPhone wold benefit greatly from some IS lovin'.

Thanks for your stream of great content!
  • Mark B
ordered my shield bout a week ago. patiently waiting for delivery
  • Sean
    I want the invisibleSHIELD.
I take serious care of my iPhone. I've got a very basic case on it right now, but need something that will protect it no matter what and I figure "military strength" will suffice. People have asked to hold my phone or look at it... I hold it for them, no one touches this thing but me. I clean it 2-3 times daily to a mildly obsessive extent. I love the iPhone, not afraid to admit it and I need this shield.
  • DaveC
it's nice to win anything. good luck everyone...
  • Jinnai
Nice prize if you can win it.
  • Check it out. Mentioned ya on my blog. http://superblogger-jinnai.blogspot.com/
  • Darren
I could use the shield because my iPhone desperately needs a case and if I win, I can brag to my friends that 'the' iPhonefan sent me an invisible shield =]
  • DocNic
It sure would be nice to win the invisible shield...seeing as even with the delay on the contest and shipping, it'll probably get here before my Roger's Iphone 3G order...if anyone knows how to complain to speed up the process, let me know! It's freaking crazy that they have total control - they don't give you tracking info, you can't find out online without calling, and there is no estimate on shipping dates...
  • Mike
my biggest question would be how this shield compares to the other skins/shields out there .. what justifies the higher price for IShield? btw: no questions asked if i can get one for free of course ... ;-)
  • Rude van Steenes
Thanks for all the great advice and product reviews, I get the feed daily & it's all good! Reason for the shield; you've said it all brother and there's nothing else to add. The fact that you've had one on for over a year is a true testament to it's durability, etc. The lifetime guarantee is the dessert to an already stellar product!
    Please enter me and thanks!
  • A friend of mine has one for his iPod touch and loves it. Unfortunately, he doesn't yet have an iPhone (unlike myself who, armed with a list of 25 stores in Vancouver, got one on my first stop. No line-up. No heartbreak. It turned out that all of the downtown Vancouver store managers were meeting at this one location on Saturday morning to divvy up the stock of existing iPhones. Man, I lucked out. Got the sickest white 16 Gig baby and am loving it.) and I would love to let him know how well the shield works on a real iPhone.

    BTW Good article.
  • Jason
So i gave my 1st Gen iphone to my daughter. It would be great to have the invisibleSHIELD on it to protect it.By the way she is only 6. She uses it for the ipod and movie features.
  • Aman
I just got the iphone formthe rogers store in edmonton and loving it but not the plans for rogers. OK this is why I should get the invisible sheild for the phone because 5 or so months ago i got the touch when opened vola srcatchs on the back nothing on the front then I strated notcing more srcaths on the back then a few weeks later my touch looks like a road on the chrome then i tried about 5 case's stiil no good luck the case's made more srcatchson the back then a months later there are sractchs on the front they look horrible and i hate so I don't want this to happen same thing to my sick iphone it going to horrible, like my touch so it would be nice to be worry-free about my iphone srcatchs. So if I recevice the shield I would reconsider reading your blog again for instrcution.
    Please enter me. Thank you
  • Well considering the fact that I cary my phone around everywhere I go inside of the box it came in I think an invisible shield would help. That or some sort of helium balloon I can afix to the iphone box and have it follow me around...I think that could be cool. The only issue is I doubt I could take that on a plane...or even drive with it very well...All in all I need the invisible shield to prevent myself from getting in a freak helium balloon/iphone car accident.
  • Nabeel
Because I need something to protect my new investment. Its gotta last for 3 freaking years! LOL
  • SunnyVan
I messed up my invisible shield. Is there retail store that does installation of invisible shield? This is really hard to get it right. I will have to order it again online. I wonder if there is any stores that sell invisible shield and install it too?
  • macdim
Had the Invisible Shield on my 1st gen and loved it. Can't wait to get mine for the 3G!
  • Geoff
Already have a nice scratch on the back from my keys. Why I put my 3g in the same pocket as my keys I'll never know. I hate cases on the iPhone, ruins the great design, and I love the feel of the iphone in my hand without a case on it.
  • I am worthy of the ZAGG invisibleSHIELD for the iPhone 3G because...

    1. I have 3 girls (4, 3 & 21 months) that all like to play with my iPhone
    2. My wife likes to take my iPhone to her work (she's a nurse) so she can have access to the Epocrates App
    3. I like to put my iPhone in my pocket
    4. I like to "wake up" with my iPhone and "go to bed" with my iPhone
    5. My wife used to hate when I was on my computer all the time...She hates it even more that I am on my iPhone all the time now
    6. I wipe down my iPhone like 300 times a day
    7. I have nightmares of putting my keys in the same pocket that my iPhone is in
    8. I went through an Samsung Handheld, HTC 6800 & Blackberry Pearl & approx $1000 worth of phone purchase to only find my iPhone 3g with another carrier
    9. With my iPhone 3G I feel content / satisfied and will not fall to the pressures of the pure awesomeness of future gadgets...until the next iPhone comes out that is
    10. I go to the iphoneincanada blog like as many times as I clean my iPhone!

Hope this is deserving of the Zagg InvisibleSHIELD.
  • Oops, commented in the wrong section for the contest, lol.....
I would absolutely love to get an InviShield.
I've read your BLOGS off & on over the months & it's certainly piqued my curiousity!
Plus, was reading the latest entry above, asking myself 'How could you spray your phone liberally with Soap Solution? Won't this damage my phone?"
Then, it was like you read my mind....lol
Good to hear that I'd be 'good to go' if I did spray my phone with the solution.
This really sounds like a very comprehensive kit, not to mention that InviShield's lifetime guarantee is 'out-of-this-world'!!!
Plus, would really love to just be lucky enuf to win something, one of these days!
Either way, I still would like to thank you, iPhoneFan becuz not only do you 'share the wealth' (meaning that instead of keeping all the 'goodies' you receive for testing, for yourself) you most graciously share them ALL with the rest of your faithful readers, thru these give-aways!

I would use it to protect my phone from my tech freak 2 year old. Ok it will not protect it from him dipping it in his milk but if you saw my current phone's state you would agree, not having a shield is not an option.

I'm looking for a serious protection for the iPhone and the Inivisible Shield is on top of my list. Hope this will be my lucky post! :)
  • Because my iPhone deserved the best!

The question is, "do you feel lucky today?"

Protection, protection, protection... can't wait. Thanks!

iPhone Fan, I hope you will share with us when you replace the invisibleShield on your first gen iPhone! I know that the invisibleShield doesn't use any type of glue, but I still wonder how easy will be to replace it.

    Thanks.
