QuickPwn 2.2 and PwnageTool 2.2 Download Now Available!

That was fast, wasn’t it? The iPhone Dev Team has once again jailbroken the latest 2.2 firmware! They have released download links available for QuickPwn 2.2 and PwnageTool 2.2 via Bit Torrent. There is no support for the 2G iPod Touch as the Dev Team is concentrating their efforts on the iPhone 3G software unlock (it will allow you to use your iPhone with any SIM card around the world).

Here are some very important instructions posted by the Dev Team, which I think we should all read very carefully:

# GOLDEN RULE: If you have a 3G iPhone and want potential soft unlock in the near future do NOT use QuickPwn, and do not use the official ipsw or the iTunes update process without using PwnageTool.

# Read item 1 again and again.

# At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the latest versions of PwnageTool and QuickPwn.

# These are suitable for the recent 2.2 release.

# Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.

# The ‘late 2008’ MacBook/air/pro line of computers have an issue with DFU mode.  While it’s possible to go from Pwned 2.1 -> Pwned 2.2 (using PwnageTool), you can’t yet go from stock to pwned.  If in any doubt use a different machine.

# Choosing the correct tool is crucial. Be warned!

Bittorrent Releases

* PwnageTool 2.2 for Mac OS X is here (updated for Simple Mode) SHA1 Sum – 97ee6096aaa1967498431bf01c36c18d0e877545

* QuickPwn 2.2 for Mac OS X is here SHA1 Sum – 254b8af0e19870a4660b7b11e3b6f6ae1d6bc66f

* QuickPwn 2.2 for Windows is here SHA1 Sum – ffdbc561224c61ffc2713cb6a6e696b6d429c4ca

In a nutshell, if you want to software unlock your iPhone 3G in the future, ONLY use the PwnageTool to make a custom firmware. Do not use iTunes to update to 2.2.

As for myself, I am planning on using the PwnageTool to install a custom 2.2 firmware on my iPhone. However, I recently picked up the late 2008 MacBook and apparently DFU mode is a problem. Maybe I’ll do some tests to see if it really is true. Self guinea pig anyone? :P I will be sure to post a video of the entire process so stay tuned!

If you’re going to jailbreak 2.2, I would suggest waiting a day or two for all the “kinks” to smooth out. Everytime these files get released, people jump in too quickly without reading thoroughly and preparing yourself to make sure you do it correctly. If you’re not comfortable with tinkering around with your iPhone, jailbreaking is not for you! Use caution at all times!

Let us know how your jailbreaking process goes in the comments!

It got stuck after quickpwn said it was installed successfully. I waited 45 minutes and it still hung there. I tried poering off with the home button pressed numerous times. After I gave up on it, about an hour later the apple symbol disappeared and springboard was back up…weird. But 2.2 is installed now and jailbroken..sweet!

From what I can see, there is no point in updating. There are always issues with this process and I don’t think that a Jailbroken 2.2 firmware is going to be any different/faster than the 2.1. Plus, they didn’t add any of the features that we were asking for, like landscape text/email, search options for mobilcal, and other such requests. This time I think I’ll wait for 2.3+ or 3.0!

Thank you guys for all your comments, and have a question: is this just for jailbroken 3Gs? I haven’t jailbroken my iphone but would like to unlock it in the future, can I use the Pwnage Tool or QuickPwn (which one?) on my 3G before going to itunes?

    thanks again!

I ran into a weird one: I have a 1st gen iPhone. I was running 2.1, unlocked and jailbroken. I restored in iTunes, then ran the newest QuickPwn on my Mac. Everything went fine until the very end, where it says “Quickpwn is about to run on your iPhone.”. Then it just didn’t do anything. Wheels kept spinning. I left it for about 30 minutes. I tried uninstalling and re-installing iTunes: nope. Tried on a PC instead of Mac: nope. After digging through the internets, I found out that there was some sort of USB conflict, that is apparently a “known issue”. I unplugged all other USB devices, and everything worked fine. I had never heard of that one before.

Now I am happily running 2.2, Jailbroken.

Thanks Mike for the tip! I’ll try it next time. I remember reading about AptBackup a while ago, I just forgot to download it. I didn’t have too many apps to download again. After uninstalling Winterboard, I found that I really only had about 9 jailbroken apps so it was pretty easy to get back.

Weird. I had a USB mouse and a USB hard drive plugged into my laptop PC while running QuickPWN. Everything went smooth and fast, I guess I was lucky.

    Hey Everyone,
You can now download Emoji in Cydia. This is honestly the coolest thing ever! It’s emoticons for the iPhone. People with 2.2 firmware can view your emoticons when you send them text messages. They’ll be jealous because you either have to have 2.2 firmware and a jailbroken iPhone or be in Japan with the 2.2 firmware. Try it out! I love it. I especially how you can combine the emoticons with MakeitMine to make your iPhone even cooler!

Question: I have a 3G iphone I want to update/jailbreak using Pwnage in order to keep a future unlock possible. However, I use windows to sync with itunes. My wife also has an iPhone which she syncs with her iMac. Is it possible for me to use her iMac to update & jailbreak my iPhone, and then go back to my windows itunes for syncing etc? I don’t want to mess up either her itunes/iPhone data or mine. Thanks for any help.

It should be fine. When you connect your iPhone to a different computer you will most likely get a message saying something like: “This iPhone is synced with another library. Do you want to delete all content and sync to this library?”, or something like that. Just say NO. Just say no to anything iTunes asks you to do, and you’ll be okay. Run the Pwnage or QuickPwn, then go back to your laptop. Then you can just sync from your last back up. What you do not want to do is Update via iTunes. This will update your baseband, and hurt your chances of a true unlock, anytime soon. Hope this helps.

My brother and I both have iPhone 3G’s. I jailbroke his iPhone 3G to 2.2 firmware using my computer. He then went to his own computer and restored from backup. No problems!

Just be sure when you jailbreak that you manually download the 2.2 firmware using an external link that can be found on this website and create a custom firmware using PwnageTool. Read the Dev Team website beforehand for any extra information.

    Hope it helps!

    Hey Everyone:

    *I have Windows
    *I have a jailbroken Iphone 3G 2.1
*Of course, I would like the latest 2.2
*Of course, I would like to unlock it, if that ever is possible

So, what exactly does this all mean? Since I don’t have a MAC, I can’t use pwnagetool to create a custom baseband right, does that mean I can never upgrade? Because if I just use QuickPWN, my understanding is this will lessen my chance of ever being able to unlock it as it will update the baseband.
If someone could respond clearly about what Windows users are supposed to do if they want 2.2 AND a future unlock it would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hey guys, not sure if you know already, the QuickPwn 2.2 software for Windows (Vista) wont run/self-extract if you have an Anti-Virus like Kaspersky running in the background. Disable/Exit the Anti-Virus temporarily and lo and behold! Other than this minor but irritating inconvenience, the JB via QuickPwn 2.2 works like a charm. You GO Dev Team!

Hey, it is pretty elementary actually, “jailbreaking” is the method to FREE your iPhone from the confines of the original software/settings. Besides making your iPhone LOOK COOL, you can overcome some of the limitations of the applications shipped with the iPhone. For eg: The original iPhone cannot record Videos but by jailbreaking you will be able to download a third-party application and make the iPhone record Videos and the list goes on and on and on…sounds cool huh? You wanna try? Send me a mail..shivonix@yahoo.com and we can take it from there…

hi guys, I have an iphone 3g with the 2.1 fw, I downloaded quickpwn 2.1 and when I got to the part where you browse for firmware, the folder that popped up with iphone firmware updates didn’t have anything in it? So I updated to the 2.2 version thinking that maybe it needs an updated bundle to use. I downloaded quickpwn 2.2 and same thing happened.. am I missing something here? I’d really appreciate some help on this! thanks guys
