I’ve been waiting to post about this since the day I received my InvisibleShield in the mail. I have read about InvisibleShield products before–they have protective films for over 1000 items, such as digital cameras, laptops, Nintendo DS Lites, PSP’s, watches, etc…you name it, they have it. If they don’t have it, they can custom cut one for you! For those who have been emailing me asking about a case/protector, this review is for you!

Just What the Heck is an InvisibleShield?

If you’ve never heard of the InvisibleShield before, it’s an industrial strength urethane plastic film that fits snug over your product, which in this case, is my precious 8GB iPhone! The company likes to push that this protective film is scratch resistant and can resist scratching from coins, keys, and knives. Previously, this US military grade plastic film was used on helicopter blades to protect them from wear and tear–pretty impressive stuff.

So What’s Included for my iPhone?

I contacted InvisibleShield and they were gracious enough to send me a sample to review. Now, I have read about these films all the time and I have never tried them out for myself. So when I got this item in the mail, I was eager to put it to the test. Included in the box was the full body protective films for my iPhone, which included front, back, corner, and top and bottom bezel pieces. Included is a squeegee for smoothing out air bubbles and a soap solution spray required to install the InvisibleShield.

The Rock Solid Lifetime Warranty & 30 Day Money Back Guarantee

What I think is the best feature though, aside from the protective properties of the film is the lifetime warranty and 30 day money back guarantee. Yes, that’s right…if your film ever peels or scratches, InvisibleShield will send you a replacement for free–for life! That’s pretty cool, as you don’t see that from many companies nowadays! If you’re not satisfied with the product you can contact them and get your money back.

How Does the Installation Process Work?

Okay…so after work on Friday night, I took some time to install the InvisibleShield. These are the steps I followed to install my InvisibleShield, as per their instructions with a few extra tips thrown in by yours truly:

  1. Wash your hands. Turn off the iPhone.
  2. Wipe the dust/fingerprints on your iPhone clean.
  3. Spray the solution on your fingers prior to peeling the film–this eliminates fingerprints on the film.
  4. The first film: Spray the sticky side of the front screen protector liberally. Don’t delay too long, as dust can settle on your screen! When I’m viewing a white background, I can see a couple specks of dust that got onto my shield. So you have to be quick when applying the front!
  5. img_2357-medium.JPG
  6. Apply to the front, and use the squeegee to smooth out any air bubbles. Let sit for 10 mins to set.
  7. Spray your fingers again, and peel the back film. Spray the film and apply it to the back only–squeegee air bubbles. Hold off on the corners till later.
  8. img_2358-medium.JPG
  9. Let the back set for 10 mins or so. Now, spray the corners again, and press down carefully. The instructions say to push the corners into the palm of your hands, but that didn’t work out for me. Too many ripples. I just used my giant thumbs to press them into to place. Hold for at least 2-3 minutes. Repeat for all 4 corners.
  10. img_2365-medium.JPG
  11. Spray your fingers, and apply the corner dots, home button, and top and bottom bezel pieces (the bezel pieces take patience).
  12. Let your iPhone sit for 24 hours so the shield can set.
  13. Voila! Full body protection!!!

img_2366-medium.JPG img_2367-medium.JPG

All in all, the install took me over an hour. It wasn’t difficult, but it requires patience and lots of time if you want to get it right. Since these films are precision cut, they fit like a glove. The specifications are pretty much bang on. I only had snip 2mm off one of the top bezel ends because it was too long. I also used lots of the soap solution spray, to ensure that my install was snug and I didn’t get any fingerprints on my film. Aside from that, it’s a pretty straightforward install. Just be patient and have lots of time!!

The Final Verdict…Is the InvisibleShield for YOU?

Prior to my InvisibleShield, I had a clear film protector on the screen of my iPhone (purchased from your local Asian cellphone shop; $5) and a black silicone case. This actually ended up scratching parts of my iPhone as dust and got into the case! Here’s my old setup:

img_2355-medium.JPG before and after: img_2371-medium.JPG

Anyways, I am very happy with the InvisibleShield. Now that I don’t have my bulky silicone case, the sexiness of the iPhone’s design is shown all the time. Plus, there is increased grip when I’m holding my iPhone! The film is only 0.20 millimeters thick! It’s pretty cool having a non-existent full body protector!

What about the touch screen? I knew someone would be asking that. I have noticed ZERO difference in the touch screen. The sensitivity has stayed virtually the same.

There are a couple downsides. The plastic can attract dust if it’s in your jeans pocket, but it can easily be wiped away or picked off. I am wary of the corner pieces getting nicked and coming loose…but so far it’s held on pretty strong!

*edit* Feb.2/08 It’s been two weeks and I’ve been storing my iPhone in my jacket and jeans pockets–no loose corners yet! This is due to the extra time I took to apply the corners–press and hold for a few minutes to ensure a good stick!**

Also, you will notice that the reflections on my front screen are not necessarily clear…there are sort of ripples in the shield. This however does not affect the view whatsoever. The screen still looks great to me.

How Much is the InvisibleShield?

The full body shield for the iPhone costs $24.95US, which may seem expensive when you compare it to other iPhone cases and protector solutions out there. However, for the lifetime warranty and 30 day money back guarantee, I think you have nothing to lose by trying out the InvisibleShield! If you don’t like it, you get your money back. Simple as that. If it tears, rips, or peels off your iPhone, you can get a free replacement. If you tear or damage an existing iPhone case, will that company send you a free replacement? Food for thought, huh?

In the end, the choice is yours on what you want. If you want thin, invisible protection for your iPhone, then the InvisibleShield will love your iPhone. If you are looking for protection from drops and bumps, I would consider looking into a hard case or silicone protector, but that brings added bulk. The choice is yours! :) You can check out or purchase the InvisibleShield for your iPhone by clicking here. Use coupon code iphoneinca for 15% off!!!

I would give away the InvisibleShield, however it’s on my iPhone. If I can get another one from the company, expect another contest in the future. Thanks for reading!

    Tip for Applying InvisibleShield:

I went to a mall kiosk, bought the InvisibleShield, entire body jacket, for my new Apple iPhone 3G and paid $24.95. I then spent another $10.00 to have the professionals at the kiosk apply it. I had to wait about 30 minutes, but they did an excellent job. It will save you the aggravation of applying it yourself, which can be quite difficult. The $10.00 was well worth it. If you have already purchased one online, try and find a pro to apply it. I bought the front cover InvisibleShield and tried applying it myself, didn’t like it, returned it to BestBuy, and went this route instead. This is the best protection one could have for any gadget!! I love it and would highly recommend it!!

I bought the IS the other day and I thought I would use latex gloves to handle the shield…bad idea. Went and washed my hands and applied the solution. Even though the bottle seems long, it doesn’t seem to hold much solution. I would like to know how to make it myself or be able to order it.

I find nowhere does it say that removing the plastic will be a PIA. As a result, one of my top edges is crinkled. I can see this starting to ripple or peel. In fact, in that area, there’s some ripple already.

I did find a bit of dust does get trapped, even though I did it the bathroom. I had difficulty with the small home key piece. However, I am happy overall, although I didnt apply the back shield yet. I can see this one will be more difficult. If anyone has any additional tips in handling the small pieces and applying the corners, please post here.

I emailed IS about my concerns and tried to call them. THey still havent replied to my email or returned my message. I dont think that’s a good thing. It’s been over a week. I wonder if they’re having financial problems?

I think Cheryl was very lucky in being able to return the shield to BB because once you apply it, u can’t return it. They mustve been smitten by you ;)

BTW, I forgot to add, the shield was not a PERFECT fit, the sides on the main front screen were NOT completely covered, there is a bit of a gap on both sides. Therefore, it doesn’t offer complete coverage.

i purchases the shield a couple of months ago, it works great. In Canada you can buy it for the iphone 3g at London Drugs, that ware i bought mine, about $30, it worth it. Maybe alittle over priced, but most of the accesories are about the same anyways.

it was a little tricky to put on, you have to have some patients, and make sure you your device is CLEAN before you try to but it on, and follow the instructions that come with it, pretty straight forward, clean, spray, adjust, then squeegee. You may have to hold the edges a little longer tilll they are tacky again.
If you are getting close to running out of solution, just fill it up with tap water and give it a good shake.
You can remove it if you want, but why would you? once you do, you cant put it back on again.
Also once you have it on, the liquid may make the screen a little blurry at first, this is OK and become clear once everything has dried, which may take about a day. Turn your phone off while you do it, your probably safe turning it on about an hour after your done, giving some time for the liquid to dry a little.
As for the comment above, no its not complete coverage, it fits with in the silver border on the front, but still provides great protection against scratching and other crap that gets on your phone.

Thanks for the invisibleshield review. I took my chances and bought one. I love it. It protects my phone and doesnt add the bulk. My only compaint was how hard the product is to find in Canada. I found a site called http://www.clearshields.ca. I ordered it online and had it at my house within days. I have recently ordered a few more for my ipod and digital camera.

I reccomend this product to anyone!

Thanks for the great review! It was the reason behind me buying one. I found it very difficult to find in Canada. I found them at http://www.Clearshields.ca . I ordered it online and had it within the week. It is the best case because it adds no buld and protects my phone from scratches. I have recently gone back to clearshields.ca and bought one for my ipod.

Thanks for the review! keep em coming!
