Mophie Juice Pack First Gen iPhone Review

The battery life on the first gen iPhone is pretty darn good. My first gen iPhone is able to last on standby for days on end, even with WiFi usage and talk time (if only the iPhone 3G could match its older brother). Well, you could argue the stellar battery life is a result of the lack of 3G/EDGE. But what about those heavy iPhone warriors out there? How can you extend your iPhone’s battery life?

This is where the Mophie Juice Pack for the first gen iPhone comes into play (the iPhone 3G version is coming soon). Essentially your iPhone plugs into this non-slip, soft grip case loaded with a lithium polymer battery that charges and extends your usage. Here are the Mophie stats on just how long it can extend your battery:

The Mophie Juice Pack is well built in a rugged design that is black and green. At first I wasn’t a big fan of the green but it will grow on you. It’s fairly light but obviously there is some added weight due to the fact you’re carrying an extra battery pack–but it’s worth it for the extra juice you’re gonna get.

On the bottom of the unit, there is a standard Apple USB plugin so you can charge the Juice Pack and your iPhone at the same time. On the back of the unit, you can find out how much power is left in the pack through 4 LED’s that light up when you push a button.

So…the question remains…does this thing work? The obvious answer is YES! You just slide your iPhone into the unit and you’ll hear the familiar iPhone “charge” sound. I tested it out with my first gen iPhone and the Mophie juice pack was able to recharge the phone back to about 90-100%. My first gen iPhone had the invisibleSHIELD on and it is able to slide in with a tight fit. The Mophie Juice Pack is Apple Certified to work with the iPhone, so you know it’s not going to destroy your precious little baby.

I can see this Mophie Juice Pack as a great backup if you’re out on a day trip, a weekend getaway, or just to leave in the car as an emergency backup. It’s pretty small so you can take it anywhere. As for the cost, the unit retails for $99–a steep price to pay for extra power. But for those who travel lots and need that extra juice, it could very well be worth every penny. There’s nothing worse than running out of battery on your iPhone when you’re on the road! It really is up to you to decide if this unit will fit your needs.
