OtterBox iPhone 3GS Case Review

by Gary on September 2nd, 2009

The question of protection for your iPhone is one that comes up all the time. What’s the best case? What’s the strongest case out there? In reality, it really comes down to what YOU like and your tastes. However, if you’re looking for one of the strongest cases out there to protect your iPhone 3GS, don’t forget to keep OtterBox in mind.

We’ve reviewed cases from OtterBox many times in the past. We’ve seen so far…

- iPhone Defender Case
- iPhone Armor Case (video of it being dunked into water) (discontinued)
- OtterBox 3000 Waterproof Box (videof me driving my car over this box)
- iPhone 3G Defender Case

What’s Changed for the iPhone 3GS?

Today we’re going to take a look at the iPhone 3GS Defender case and what’s changed. In a nutshell, not much has changed since the form factor of the iPhone 3GS has stayed the same as the iPhone 3G.

However, the engineers at OtterBox noticed that OS 3.0 firmware brought some different acoustic changes. They increased the density of the foam donut found around the two bottom speakers inside the case to ensure superior sound quality.

Still One of the Strongest Cases Out There

Aside from the above change, the OtterBox Defender case for the iPhone 3G/3GS still offers three layers of protection: a clear membrane over the touch screen, a hard polycarbonate skeleton, and a tight fitting silicone skin on the outside. This all fits together perfectly in the included ClipStand holster.

The OtterBox Defender case weighs 54 grams and its dimensions are 4.87″ x 2.77″ x .8″. It’s one of the strongest iPhone cases out there without question. It does add some bulk and hide the sexiness of the iPhone’s design, but it’s a small price to pay if you work and play in extreme environments.

Special Note for invisibleSHIELD Users

Also, once again if you have the invisibleSHIELD full body installed, the Defender case will fit if you squeeze the iPhone in tightly, but your invisibleSHIELD application will be damaged. So be warned! Check out the pictures below (and click here for more pictures)

You can’t go wrong with an OtterBox if you’re looking for the strongest protection out there for you iPhone. At the price of $49.95US, the OtterBox Defender case is on the high end of iPhone cases. But like I said, if you’re a clumsy fool (that is also willing to invest in a premium case) and you always drop your phone, this is the case for you.

Is there a holder for this case that fits in your car? All of the ones that I have seen are extremely large and bulky or look like they are from outerspace.

I've owned the otter box since jan 02/10 and the case is the greatest for my rough handling.
The plastic holiser is another story. I probably remove the phone from the holister about 12 times a day. Not alot.
The clips that hold the phone in are almost worn out. Just a slight rub on anything sends the phone to the ground. Thank god for a great case. It realy needs a better designed holister

My iPhone 3G in an Otterbox survived a 2 1/2 story fall to a concrete floor.
    I love this case.

Very happy with mine ... waaay better than the Griffin Wave I bought with the phone ... only had 2 complaints: the watermark/bubble thing on the screen and the holster. Watermark was solved 100% with the baby powder trick (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Im7vvblnzoY&feat...). Have to be careful putting it into the holster if I'm wearing a loose shirt (tends to get caught leaving the phone insecure). Holster works well as a stand and using the Rise and Shine app is perfect on my bedside table. I'm in the military and have a 10 month old, so it gets a lot of bashing and chewing/slobbering: not a scratch on it (the case, let a lone the phone) after 3 weeks. Also have the armband, which does the job, but could be better.

    Worth the $$$ and more

I personally have this case, because occasionally I do some construction work on the side. I have to say it protects the iphone like a tanks!!! The only downfall is that the holster wasn't secure; I must have dropped my phone 10 times during a demolition project. Great case, bad holster.

I have the same problem with my holster! I was worried it was only me!
  • Nightcrwlr
Actually after writing this post I called Ottercase and explained the situation, they told me to heat the two little pressure points on the holster and bend them in. (where it makes contact with the iphone). But I told him if I break it , wouldn't that void my warranty??? He was like NOPE! As a matter a fact he put another holster in the mail for me just in case I did break it. I haven't tried it, let me know if it works for you.

Thanks a bunch man, I'll call OtterBox as well just in case, I'll try it and will post a comment back here to let you know how it worked.

I have one of these and I swear by it. It's awesome. I live it. Only one issue is the protection on the side edges of the screen kind of limit the ability to hit the side of the touch screen and when typing the letter "p" and "q" can be missed sometimes if u have bigger thumbs.

Quite expensive, but should do the job! Good review.
