Belkin iPhone 3G Leather Sleeve with Clip Review

by Mr. Ex on July 22nd, 2008

Hey Folks,

Welcome to another edition of X1Zero’s Corner.

I know that I said before that this would be a Sunday thing, but I have decided to modify that a little bit.

Sunday’s blog posts in X1Zero’s Corner will be entirely dedicated to tech support, the forums, and your questions. Every other blog post in X1Zero’s Corner will be whatever it is that I feel is worthy to blog about. So, without further ado, I introduce this Tuesday blog post regarding a case review of the BELKIN LEATHER SLEEVE WITH CLIP for IPHONE 3G.

As it stood from July 11, 2008 to about right now, I had no case for my iPhone 3G. Well, actually, I had the original plastic wrap that came with the iPhone acting as my “screen protector”, but other than that, my iPhone 3G was bare. Anyway, after noticing a few surface scratches along the back (HEART ATTACK!), I decided that I needed some kind of case to protect my iPhone. Enter Belkin.

During a recent visit to a local mall, my eye caught this very slick looking leather case with white stitching. Upon closer inspection with Jay (I think that was the sales associates name), it was revealed that the case also included an attached belt clip. So, I decided to purchase.

The case is very nice. It has a solid leather feel and fits snugly to the iPhone 3G. It has an outlined button for the “Home Button” on iPhone 3G, a large cut-out for the incoming audio speaker and accompanying sensors, and also has open access to the dock connector port, the silent switch, volume controls, sleep/wake button, and the headphone jack. Also included is a velcro strap along the top to securely hold iPhone 3G in place and a good circular cut-out for the camera.

Along the sides and bottom are black elastics further securing the iPhone 3G in place. However, the bottom elastics do block the speaker and microphone openings. Because of this, I found that at times it was difficult to hear such outgoing audio as text messages or calls, but generally it was fine because the elastics are fairly thin. The only one thing that I did not really like is the top left and right corners of the iPhone 3G are pretty exposed, but it hardly causes a problem.

Lastly, and probably my favourite feature, is the belt clip. It is securely fastened to the back of the case and does not stand out as a separate piece from the case itself; its all one piece. The reason I like this very much is because it keeps the case slim and close to your waist, jacket, bag, or whatever so that the phone or the case has a lesser chance of catching some obstruction and falling.

Included in the box was the case itself, a screen protector (the films that go on top of the screen), and a lifetime warranty (win!). The going price is $34.99 and can be purchased either from Belkin or your local cellphone accessory source (if there is stock). Considering I just picked this case up, I have not “stress” tested it by dropping it on the ground or anything like that, but I can say that the case does protect the iPhone from little bumps and scuffs because the leather does a pretty good job of covering the entire iPhone.

Well folks, I hope you have enjoyed another edition of X1Zero’s corner. Unfortunately, I do not have a give-away this time around, but stay tuned.

I dont like the Belkin Clip one bit. I bought it a day after I bought my iphone 3g to protect it. It was fine for a couple of days. But then I started to see the threading starting to come out. The no 1 complaint I have about the belkin leather sleeve is the clip on it. This clip is way too tight at the end. At times I had to wrestle with the device to get it to clip onto my belt or even the edge of my jeans pockets. Even try putting your pinky finger in the middle of the clip and you will be yelling out of pain in a couple of seconds. The other thing is it does not swivel, it stays vertical; so when you are driving or just sitting, it can get a bit uncomfortable.

After a few days of using it and struggling with it to get it to clip onto my belt, I started to notice that the leather on the inside of the clip was starting to wear off. A few days after that, the whole leather sleeve that was on the clip was started to slide down off of it. It got to a point where I could see the metal portions of the clip starting to show from the back.

I was and still am very disappointed with the Belkin Sleeve. I had to go out and buy another Leather sleeve that was not as tough.

I would not recommend this to anyone. Save your money. There are better leather cases out there for the iphone that are better and cheaper.

X1, I am wondering if you can help me with something?
I was following your steps in "so,you've unlocked your iPhone...now what" and after I downloaded the BSD Subsystem and tried go back into Installer a Notice screen pops up that states "Do not use passwd to change the password on 1.1.3, it is currently broken and will make SpringBoard crash continuously!". Even though it has an OK button I can not move it or get into Installer. I have an unlocked with 1.1.4. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    @Ds7777,

Looks like this is an older case. I picked it up at a Wireless Wave.

I also picked this case up a few days ago. The leather is durable and case is slim. The belt clip is a plus so you don't have to put the phone in your pocket. Overall, a very good buy.
  • looks good! the pdo one that i won off this site is the same kind of style, with a belt clip, and i like it a lot. one of my friends calls it a holster lol.. it's just not as fancy with the stitching (but it has the nice red stripes lol).. then again, it cost me $34.99 + tax less than yours lol. but that style of iPhone case is definitely one of my favourites for sure.
