Case Review: iSkin Solo FX for iPhone 3G/3GS

Today I have a review of the iSkin Solo FX. The Solo FX is a form-fitting case for your iPhone 3G/3GS that provides durable protection and a little style to go with it.

Solo FX by iSkin

The Solo FX is an upgrade from iSkin’s Solo line up. The primary difference between the two are that the Solo FX adds embossed designer patterns to go along with the its high-gloss color finish.

The Solo FX is a fairly thick silicone case and does encompass the back and sides of the device completely. This works well against impacts and scratches that usually occur on the back and sides of iPhones. The Solo FX is also hot/cold resistant and is odor-free, both of which are welcomed features, especially the odor-free aspect because as many of you likely know, some silicone cases have that funny-siliconey smell even when they are brand new!

The silicone shell covers the volume rocker and sleep/wake button, but still allows full access to them. You also get clear access to the headphone jack, silent switch, camera, dock connector, and mic/speaker.

For the front of the case, the Solo FX includes a mirror film that is applied directly to the screen of the iPhone 3G/3GS. The mirror film is touch compatible, so you can still use the iPhone touchscreen normally. The film provides protection against scratches and dust mostly and is also quite neat because the film is reflective. However, the reflection feature of the film is only truly useful when the iPhone screen is asleep or off. Ofcourse, this is an optional add on and does not need to be applied if you choose not to.

Overall, the Solo FX provides adequate, durable protection for your iPhone and also throws in a little style with the colors and embossed patterns. I give it a solid 4/5.

I have the translucent blue with me today and I will give it away to someone that posts a meaningful comment below about the case!

    I really like how the iSkin Solo FX is one piece and isn’t fairly bulky but still offers a stylish form of protection for the iPhone. I looked at a good 10-15 iphone cases today at the apple store and all of them are either made of the dust attracting silicone rubber, clear snap on / clear front &back snap on cases that are bulky but show off the phone.

    i like how its heat resistant. my old silicon case would always get warm if i was using data too long. welcomed feature!

    I don’t think being heat resistant is that good for your phone though as this means less cooling for the phone. Keep in mind that the phone’s only means of cooling is to conduct the heat to the back cover.

    How well does the case stick around the edges of the sides and top and bottom of the phone. I can see that it only covers a tiny part around the edges and as silicone is pretty flexible I am afraid that would become too flexible with use.

First the case covers the chrome, for me this is huge as i really don’t like how the chrome looks. Secondly it looks like the case forms a slightly raised lip around the entire screen, this is an important protection feature which should not be overlooked. If the phone is dropped face down onto a flat surface this lip will help protect the screen.

    Lastly it seems kinds expensive for a silicone case, but then it is the best looking silicone case i’ve ever seen so it may be worth it.

    I would probably like a protection for my iPhone… Curently I don’t use one and I don’t have a scratch on it! It won’t last like this forever :( I think the iSkin is the perfect one for me because it is resistant and the texture seems to be “plasticy”, which I prefer compared to silicone! I’m a good person to win it :P

    Color choice is always nice! Reflective screen protector is a cool addition. I too wonder about the case. I have used other silicone cases, and they’re just too soft for in and out of pocket use. However this one looks sturdy enough. I also wonder about the heat conduction.

    When I got my 3GS, I saw the guy at the store pull his iPhone out and it had the coolest case on it.

    Now I know what that case was. Win this contest or not, that’s the case I want. It looks slick!

    That looks like it could give some decent impact protection. Those pictures make me think an iPhone with this case might bounce like a rubber ball if it were accidentally dropped. :)

    Is it safe to assume that this mirror film is one of those “permanent” screen protectors, and not just a slip-on/slip-off sort of thing?

    Having recently taken off my zagg case I am getting this. However I am worried about the mirror. My neighbor just got one and he can’t see his screen outside so I may need to pick up a clear one

    i love the color! i’ve always liked iSkin products for all of my ipods and iphones – iSkin products are always of great quality. Now that I’m anticipating the arrival of my 3GS (should arrive someday hopefully), I need a new case, hope to try out one of these.

    Always good to see someone promoting a good Canadian product!

    The skin looks great, and it looks like it would repel lint rather than collect it. Like other silicone skins.

    As for the mirror screen protector, unless it is different from the three pack I purcased on eBay, I wouldn’t find it useful. It worked good indoors, other than cutting back on brightness and contrast, but when I went outside into the sunlight it became almost impossible to see.

    I flipp my hat into the ring for a chance at winning.
