Changes Coming to Rogers Data Plans?

There has been some buzz lately that changes are coming to Rogers’ data plans. This includes prices and features, according to some of the online forums out there. Could this be a hint that they are preparing for the launch of the iPhone? It is an interesting theory, but I’m not going to get into the “what ifs” here. If the iPhone is coming, then it will come and we will just have to wait. The speculation does nothing for us all. But it sure is fun to have hope, right? ;)

Anyways, according to O_ssie from HowardForums, on Feb. 5, 2008…the following changes will occur to Rogers data plans:

Value Packs Update:
$5 Community Value Pack
500 SMS, 50 MMS
3 months unlimited SMS and MMS

$20 Updated Communicate Pack
Caller ID, Name Display, Voicemail, Who Called
2500 SMS, 1000 MMS
Unlimited On-Device Mobile Browsing

$7 Vision Internet Package
50 Video Calling mins
Unlimited On-Device Mobile Browsing
Unlimited Video calling for 12 months

New Data Plans
$7 – Unlimited On-Device Mobile Browsing
$15 – 2MB Blackberry Package

Whoa! By now you probably noticed the $7 unlimited mobile browsing plan! This plan, if true would rival Bell’s $7 unlimited data plan, and Telus’ $15 unlimited plan. However, there are some restrictions. Apparently this new data plan with be IMEI (the identifying # on every GSM cell phone) driven, which means that Rogers will be tracking which phones will be allowed to access these data plans. So for example, if you pop your SIM card from your HTC Touch into your SE W580i, the system will recognize your device and charge your accordingly. The W580i would be under “unlimited WAP”, while the HTC Touch would be charged for data.

It would be very interesting if this is going to come true. Could a decrease in data prices actually be coming from a country that has some of the highest prices in the world? All I know is that if there was an unlimited data plan with Rogers, it would make a lot of iPhone users in Canada (including myself) very, very happy.

    Hey,

If anybody using an iphone or PDA if you give me your wireless phone number and postal code I can lookup your account and let you know whether it is registered properly onto your account and whether Rogers knows if you’re using it.

I had my simcard in an iphone the other day that I was unlocking for a friend and when I looked up my account it showed the exact time, to the second, that I took it out of my w810 and then when it was in the iphone and then when I put it back in my phone.

So, if you want me to check your account, let me know.

As for the people who have called customer service about their data usage, thats probably not a good idea, as it’s not an automated process that checks if you’re on an unapproved device and you’re just flagging your account to be cross referenced with the data use times and the imei that was registered during those times, which will result in charges.

As far as I know right now, they are only checking up on high usage accounts to make sure it’s registering a valid IMEI.

Also, as further clarification, my mother has been using an ipaq for 3 years, it says clear as day on her account the IMEI, model # and time it was registered. She has the 20$commpack which used to include 5mb, but now includes ‘unlimited’ (with the same restrictions as the new $7 plan). She uses it for Data very seldom, and has never been charged for the data yet. So like I said, high usage will be audited and charged if it’s found.

on a side note, anyone with the 20commpack, call into customer service, remove it from your account and then ask them to add it again so you change from 5mb to ‘unlimited’. It will reset your voicemail though.

    hey thomas,

so i’m kind of confused now.. should we change over to the unlimited data comm or not, heh. I doubt i’d be ‘high’ usage, 150mb/mo maybe (though thats high for’wap’ browsing..), just regular browsing when i’m out, email and so on. I’ve been told by every rep you need to use the rogers browser, however, or it’ll be flagged&charged at 5/kb.

What shoudl we do if we do to find out if youll be charged or not, i know teh 5for 5 is still exists so we could add it if needed for minimal use after we change, but i dont want to end up with a hugeass bill for changing, and using my iphone on it.Could you verify you DONT need to use the rogers browser? WOndering since it says 3rd party apps which would mean they coudl somehow know which you’re using? 9google maps and whatnot..)

basiclly, i dont want to re-add the comm pack and lose my 5mb internet (if use it a lot more, obviosuly when im out if i coudl get hte unlimited), if ill end up being charged and have a huge bill… anyway, please let us know! Would you suggest waiting until people who switched on iphones start getting bills in to see if they get billed for it?

    Hi Thomas,

You are so helpful! Thanks for all the valuable info on the $20 Communicate plan. I’ll see if I can change my IMEI to a “rogers approved” phone, and see what surfing a small amount on my new iphone looks like in charges this month.

    Hopefully, it’ll all work out.

ps: Thomas, would you mind dropping me an email at my blog: http://www.netchick.ca — I’d really like to discuss, and perhaps give you business for the new 3 year plan I’m going to be signing up for on Monday. Cheers!
