Well here's a humdinger... I just got off the phone with a fido rep and was told that I just signed a contract a week before the iPhone came out, therefore I won't even be ELIGIBLE to OWN an iPhone for at least a year. Even then, I'll have to buy out the last 2 yrs of my contract. There's a part two to this story. I had already gone to the fido.ca website and ordered my iPhone online and I get and email with confirmation saying that it's in the mail and for whatever reason... fido says they have no record of the transaction. Strange. I'm scrounging around on the internet right now to find out how to rectify my situation.

Toronto update: Chose to go to a Rogers kiosk here in sketchier part of town that opened at 10. Good plan. Kids gotta get to school. 9th in line! Knew meager offerings planned (10-20 phones per store) but after spending 1 hour in line found out this one had only two 16GB models and were already claimed. Asked if the guy being served first was the first customer of the day. Now 10:50. Yep and still no activation. Quick calculation: 1st guy+>1hr activation-16GB modelx9 customers/2 Rogers reps(panicking)-activation=YIKES! Bailed. Me sad...freakin pissed too. This is going to blow up good in someone's face.

Apple Stores WILL NOT be selling iPhones in Canada - they will only have demo models. There is speculation whether this is a further scale-back of the launch in Canada by Apple in reaction to the Rogers plan fiasco:

http://gizmodo.com/5022988/apple-no...s-on-launch-day

Rogers WILL NOT allow people to purchase iPhones outright without signing up for a plan, though plans do not necessarily have to be iPhone plans.

Not even sure if one can buy an Iphone without a plan from Roger's though maybe from USA.

Guess I will await for a while, unlock to install CDMA chip that too am not sure.

None-the-less, I am NOT camping out nor will I support to purchase an Iphone unless Rogers modifies the plans.

Canada's largest Apple store opened up in Edmonton West Edm. Mall, not sure if they will carry any Iphones without Roger's Plans.

Absolutely NO WAY that I will be visiting a Rogers store anytime soon. The Rogers thugs can forget about getting more business from me. 36 month contract - gimme a break!

(Sticking with my Gen-1 iPhone, which costs me about $20 per month on pay as you go.)

I hope Rogers is very very disappointed by the demand - because I'm really really disappointed by their arrogance and the plans they are telling us are such "high value".

From what I've heard -- speaking directly to CSRs -- Rogers won't be selling the iPhone without a contract. In fact, that won't be selling the phone AT ALL to existing customers who aren't already eligible for upgrades.

If you're not eligible for the upgrade, they won't let you buy the phone, no matter how much money you throw at them. Presumably the only way to sidestep this limitation is to pay the cancellation fee and sign up again. Either way, you won't be getting a phone without contract.

I'm boycotting until we get better data plans. I wish everyone would do the same, but unfortunately you guys who do buy it in the first week are making rogers right. Don't let Rogers have their way. By getting an iphone, that's what you're doing.

The "rumor" regarding Apple shorting Rogers store seems suspicious to me - perhaps a ploy to get anyone who plans to boycott to show up on Friday? As in, "they might run out of phones so I had better line up and get one".

Then Rogers can say that it is only a vocal minority that oppose the prices and most consumers are "ok" with the plans.

Perhaps I am being paranoid - or just think that little of Rogers, which is a statement on the direction their brand image is going as before this, being a Telus customer, I had no experience or opinion on the company. Regardless of pricing, how can their marketing department not see the damage this is doing?
