Hey, I've used PC and recently I got a Mac Pro. I would say that most of the compatibility issues and old PC habits are forgoable easily. I have found free replacement software for Mac that I need. The experience so far on the Mac Pro is equivalent to what I experienced on Linux with respect to installation of software, but much better in terms of usage and functionality (it didnt give as much problem to get it working). However, as you will be using Macbook, you probably wont experience what I experienced in terms of hardware. On the Mac Pro, i found that the Leopard OS lacked driver support for other brands of ethernet card, firewire, etc (these are connected in the PCI-e slots). Gaming is an issue too. Some games that I play are just not installable on the Mac, while some other games do function and function much better. For the games that dont function, I need to dual boot into Vista, which I am too lazy to, so i ended up not playing them but craving.

I'm sure most of you know, but for those who don't: You get a student discount (I believe 10%) off any Apple Product if you go to University when you order online.
http://canadaapp.apple.com/routing/index.php?lang=eng is the link. not sure if it will work, if it doesn't, it's at the very bottom of the apple page labeled (after clicking on the apple store link).

Buying first gen Apple hardware is a gamble. I was burned on both my iMac and especially my first gen Macbook (1.83Ghz).

I'll be waiting for Rev.B before I consider a Macbook again.
