Further Speculation Emerges About an NFC-Enabled iPhone in 2012

Further speculation of an NFC-capable iPhone coming in 2012 have emerged, this time from Digitimes:

As Android, Symbian, BlackBerry and Bada have supported NFC (near field communication) functions and Microsoft and Apple plan to make Windows Phone and iOS support NFC in 2012, the proportion of NFC-enabled smartphones will quickly increase from less than 10% currently to over 50% in two to three years, according to Taiwan-based smartphone makers.

We’ve heard whispers of NFC coming to the ‘iPhone 6’ via the New York Times, back in March. Canada’s Wireless Dynamics already powers an NFC-capable iPhone case in South Korea. The issue with NFC becoming widespread is to get retailers on board to support the new technology. Numerous other smartphones already come with NFC capabilities. Could the iPhone be next in line?
