Google Latitude: Now Has Location History and Alerts

by Gary on November 11th, 2009

Less than four months ago, Google Latitude was finally released for iPhone users. Although we didn’t end up with a standalone app, the Latitude web-app does a great job, all things considering. You can see live traffic, get directions, check out satellite view, and more.

Google Latitude Now With Location History and Alerts

Our Google overlords are always working hard to make things better for us. Yesterday they announced that Latitude will now include Location History and Alerts. What is the purpose of these new features you ask? Let’s take a quick gander from the Google Mobile blog:

Location History:

  • Store your past locations and visualize them on Google Maps and Earth
  • Enable Latitude Alerts to get notifications when friends are nearby. Location History allows alerts to only trigger when you are in an unusual place, filtering out routine alerts.

Location Alerts:

Get alerted when your Latitude friends are nearby. Alerts only trigger when:

  • You or your friend are at an unusual place, filtering out routine alert cases at home or work.
  • You or your friend are at a routine place but at an unusual time.

How much information are you willing to divulge to Google? Detailed location history can come in handy when you’re trying to remember where you were last week when you woke up half naked in a roadside ditch after a drunken stupor. Aside from that, it might be fun to stalk your friends. Location History and Alerts is an opt-in feature, so you must enable it for it to work.

Try Google Latitude on your iPhone–it’s easy. Visit google.com/latitude in Safari.

OK, figured out how to enable it. You have to go through a few hoops. Now to develop a bit of history...

I'm not seeing this feature on Latitude. Either it's not enabled yet or I'm missing something in the menus...

Seems like a nice feature. I like the part where it may come in handy after those drunken nights lol
