Turns out the iPhone was the most sought-after smartphone during the holiday shopping season, although it’s share dropped slightly compared to the previous report that estimated Apple’s market share to be 53.3% in the 12-week period ending 25 November.

Kantar Worldpanel ComTech analyst Mary-Ann Parlato states, “Apple’s continual improvement is thanks to both the iPhone 5 and older models attracting various customer groups, from repeat Apple buyers, first time smartphone buyers and those coming from other smartphone brands”.

Android’s performance remained fairly stable, retaining 44.2% of smartphone sales, while the Windows Phone benefitted from rising demand, retaining 2.6% of sales during the 12-week period analyzed by Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, while RIM dropped to 1.1%.

It is interesting to note, however, that the research company claims 36% of iPhone buyers during the aforementioned period came from other platforms, with 19% being former Android users. This is a significant 10% rise compared to the 9% reported a year ago, while the number of iPhone owners upgrading from previous models accounted for 35% of sales last December, up from 30%.
