Official: iPhone 4 Release Date in Canada on July 30th

This morning Steve Jobs took the stage at their Cupertino headquarters to address the world about the issues surrounding the iPhone 4. Near the end of the presentation, Steve Jobs confirmed that the second wave of iPhone 4 launches will take place on July 30th–which includes Canada!

iPhone 4 Coming to Canada on July 30th–Confirmed

As we confirmed this July 30th date (this reaffirms that wireless carriers and dealers are always the last to know release dates), Apple also confirmed the white iPhone 4 will be coming at the end of July as well.

The big question remains whether or not Canadians will receive the second batch of iPhone 4 units that will have a fix to this antenna issue (based on Apple’s history to quietly fix product flaws). Also, will Canada get a chance to pre-order the iPhone 4?

Here are some Q&A’s with Steve Jobs, as tweeted by Jason Snell from Macworld:

Q: Possible for hardware fix for this product? A: Right now, the state of affairs in this industry, nobody has solved this problem. We’d like to be the first. Maybe. We’ll see. But most of our customers aren’t experiencing, and the ones who are, many of those are in test mode, duplicating what they saw on the web.

Stokes from Ars Technica: Will the free case offer extend outside the US? Jobs: Yes, it’s international.

Fortune/CNBC: You’ve been communicating more via e-mail. Can you talk about whether you’ve shifted the way you communicate with Apple’s customers? Jobs: I get a lot of emails, and I always have on some occasions replied to some of them. I can’t reply to a lot of them, because I’ve got a day job. At some point people started posting on the web, which is a little rude, to be honest. And now the most recent phenomenon is, people are making them up. So don’t believe everything you read.

But in the meantime, Apple will be giving out free Bumper cases (or a choice of a third party case) to all new iPhone 4 owners (those who purchased one will get a refund) through till September 30th (Canada included). This is not a permanent fix and doesn’t do anything really to the early iPhone 4 adopters in the USA, but it’s a start.

More to come as this story develops…

Hi Ex or Gary: about September 30??

do you what Stevie meant by saying after September 30, we will re-evaluate? Does he mean instead of free bumpers, they will start coating with non-conductive polymer on the assembly line? If so, we would be past our 30 day refund window to get a new Coated one…August 30 would be the end of that window….. Should we wait?

I don’t think the carriers will be but Apple will, at least for the unlocked ones. And the pre-order date hasn’t been announced yet. Stay tuned.

I'm of the thought that Apple will modify the internal hardware, silently, which will vastly improve the antenna issue.

While your 14-day return will be over, you will still have your standard 1-year warranty (2-year with AppleCare).

  • Vartanarsen

right, but i asked this question to an apple store employee today, and they told me i wouldnt be able to replace for a new one under the 1 year warranty….have you heard this?

  • http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/ Ex

That's the point of the one year warranty. Don't worry. You'll be able to replace it.

If the signal is bad, it's considered a defective device.

  • Vartanarsen

Thanks Ex…now Im definitely getting it!! :) )….funny, you always know what to say to make us folk happy:))

I'm just going to the nearest Rogers store as well. For me its an easy decision: 25 minute drive (to Rogers) or 1 hour drive (to the nearest Apple Store)?

  • JonnyDub

They will transfer all the info (phone number, etc.) off the old SIM onto the new Micro-sim.

  • JonnyDub

    1. Yup.
    2. Yes, it will be there waiting for you on launch day.
    3. I think so, but I'm not positive.

second batch mean the second batch to be shipped after usa etc.

    My question is…..
How does it work for the iPhone 4…..
If i buy the iPhone 4 (no contract and unlock)… Is it a different box from someone who will buy it at the apple store too with a contract ?
Let say now we're at 4.0.1 and if i update to 4.1 later…. will my iPhone will stay unlock for sure ?? If i restore, the same ??

Because i know every iphone (NOW, like from the Genius bar.) are unlock and get lock when you put the simcard in it and connect to iTunes….

So how the iPhone 4 unlock will be different from that ???

  • Coolfire

    we won’t get preorders… right?

  • http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/ Ex

Same box, sane phone. Just one will be unlocked.

    Yes, it will stay unlocked

The iPhones from the genius bar are not unlocked. They are locked during the POS process.

LOL steve said that they sold 3,000,000 iphones in the first 3 weeks. So 0.55% of 3,000,000 is around 16500 people…… so in 3 weeks 16,000 people called there phones….. thats a shit load of peopel

  • VancouverBlade

The 2,983,500 that haven’t reported an issue is a much bigger number of people.

  • Eduardocasado

How is the upgrade gonna work? is it gonna be through the apple website or do we have to go through the carrier?

  • Chrome262

if you notice the pre-orders where through ATT, and their server crashed. My bet is if we ever to get to pre-order it will be through the carriers. Now will all of them do it? doubt it. Maybe rogers and bell.

  • Raven

Hi, yes I have a factory unlocked 3GS. Its the standard apple iphone box. if you upgrade the firmware at any time in the future it will remain unlocked forever, guaranteed. phone can be used with any carrier at any time. I use my US sim card when I go down to the states and then put back my Canadian one upon my return. this is ideal! enjoy

  • Chrome262

its a bit different with the US. since they have only one carrier its easier to add it to the apple store. While they could do it here in Canada, i don't see them doing it because of the multiple carriers. Who knows though they might. they don't do it with the 3gs.

  • Alexis

Faulty device, come on. They try to create new way of making things to improve them and most are just bashing on Apple for that? It’s a great product and very small percentage actually got the antenna/reception problem. Instead try to really appreciate the amazing potential of that new device. They’ll fix it I’m not worried and that definitely won’t prevent me from getting one of those the second it’s out! Enjoy great technology stop hating ;)

  • Alexis

    Indeed.

  • kc

the only fix as of now…is the ''bumper'' case…wich is suppose to come free with the iphone 4. in canada anyway.

  • Nando83p

do you still think the iphone 4 is not going to be sold out in launch day? please answer

  • Tara

I am leaving for a 6 month trip to austalia on aug 3rd, and i wanna get the iphone 4 before i leave (here's hoping they have enough! lol). my question is… if i buy it at bell or rogers or whatever, on a plan, it will be locked and wont work in australia, but, if i get it at the apple store, will it be unlocked? also, i have heard something about being able to buy the plans from the apple store so that you dont have to pay the full price and you only pay a smaller price if you get the plan, how does that work, and in that case would it be locked? basically im just looking for someone to let me know what i should do in order to buy my phone in canada before i leave so that it will work in aus when i get there, without having to pay the full 699 price. THANKS!

  • JonnyDub

If you want it to work in Australia, you'll need to get it unlocked from an Apple Store or Apple.ca. It will be locked if you buy it at a carrier store (Rogers, Bell, Telus), so then you'd be screwed with stupid roaming charges if you took it Down Under. The only option, as I see it, is to pay full price ($699 or $799), do a monthly pre-paid plan with Vodaphone or something in Australia, then get on a contract/pre-paid monthly plan with your carrier of choice when you get back to Canada. That's all I got, hope it helps. :)

  • Tara

what happens if i buy my iphone at the apple store with a plan. it is my understanding that you can do that… go into the apple store to buy the phone, and get your contract there too, and it will be at the reduced price. will it be locked or unlocked then? sorry, every time i go into the apple store i get a different answer

So it looks like unless we are willing to call in sick to work, and wait in line early AND be lucky enough that they have a phone when we reach the front of the line, we are not getting a Iphone 4 for some time.

No home delivery preorder like in the US?

Basicly I would be better off getting a dirt cheap 3GS or look at a different smart phone?

Crappy. I feel like where such second rate customers up here.

  • Zanteogo

I don't know about this, they have been having major issues with supply with the first round of Iphone 4s. We seem to be second rate customers up here, I think a large amount of phones coming over will be going to the US side to fill pre-orders that have yet to be filled.

The fact that there has been no sign of pre-ordering up here… does not make me feel good about supply.

    A letter sent to Apple:

    Hi:
I never thought I would be writing a complaint letter to you guys, after all I am an ex employee and long time mac user.
The fact is Apple has really really dropped the ball with the iPhone 4 rollout and availability I for one and not the only one I know are thoroughly disappointed with the canadian launch (I liver here now) of the iPhone 4. While I would love to blame the cell phone providers up here ultimately you guys are the ones who supply the Phones to the providers. The fact that as of August 26th you guys still have a line out the door of people waiting at the Apple Store from 2AM every day trying to get an iPhone, the fact that Rogers and Telus etc.. will not take any orders on their websites, the fact that Rogers employees are just rude to people when you call a store to enquire about iPhone 4 availability ultimately rests on your shoulders. While i appreciate the production problems with the white units and of course the amazing demand the iPhone 4 has received, you guys had 3 years to anticipate for this, plenty of time to ensure stock piles of units to flood the markets when you released them and if you couldn’t supply the foreseeable demand then quite simply those release dates should have been pushed until you did have a good enough supply flow for the demand. You are Apple not Microsoft for a reason. unfortunately that reason on this occasion has become too close in similarity leaving people like me frustrated and disheartened that the legendary service, the surprise and delight, the shock and awe is nowhere to be found, much like the iPhone 4 a month after its release.
