Hmmm... I think the macrumors site may not be entirely accurate, but I could be missing something. They recommend not purchasing an iphone right now on the basis that updates are coming soon, but their average # of days between updates is listed at 178, and isn't it generally expected that it is closer to a year between iphone hardware updates? I would have thought their recommendation would instead be "neutral - mid product cycle", just like it is for the ipod touch. Or am I missing something?

At any rate, I've decided I can't face X-mas morning without a shiny new 32GB 3GS to play with. I need a new phone since my very old LG flip won't hold a charge for 5 minutes, so it might as well be an iphone. :) I suppose I could always try to sell it if an amazing new iphone is released this summer, although I don't know much about that (how much one could expect to get for it and how hot the market is).

Well you'd hope to expect the 4G to have some better hardware and specs then the 3GS lol
There is always going to be better! I was in the same situation with this question and said screw it and bought a new MBP couple weeks ago. I LOVE it! :) Right now was a good time too as there was some wicked deals for the holidays! Over $100's in savings.
You can keep holding off from buying one now, but then you can end up not purchasing the next release because the MBP will be refreshed again and better!
What model did u have in mind?
I don't see big changes to the 13'' MBP models as they were introduced not to long ago. Maybe a few upgrades to hardware specs... Im thinking bigger changes to the 15'' and 17'' models as Arrandale is being introduced and available in January. (I may be wrong as theres so much talk going on right now with Apple and Intel) There is other talk about different hardware and upgrades too. I say head on over to MacRumors for some great information!
Good luck on ur decision.

Keep in mind. Apple can surprise there customers anytime with new releases and upgrades you'd not expect.

The 4G has to be better than the 3Gs.....right? Also, this is totally unrelated to iPhone but....does anyone know if Apple is upgrading the MacPro anytime soon? I'm seriously looking to buy one right now but I'm afraid once I do, they'll just come up with a better one...

If Wind Mobile does get the next iPhone, it won't happen unless it's the 4G because current iPhones don't support the 1700 MHz bandwidth that Wind Mobile operates exclusively on. That means anyone thinking of joining Wind should wait until the summertime because Wind will not work with any iPhones at the moment.

Jezebel,
This problem has vexed technology users... since the first gadget was invented, and its only getting worse. Don't beat yourself up. Just get one. There will ALWAYS be something better on the horizon. That being said... go crazy with this - http://guides.macrumors.com/Buyer%27s_Guide_%28...

MW

I'd really like to see Apple release firmware that allows a carrier change without jailbreak/unlock. Once I've met my contractual obligation to Rogers I should be able to take my iPhone onto any available carrier.

I'd be interested to see whether they can legally get away with not providing the ability to change carriers after the phone is paid for.

I am waiting until the new iPhone comes out to buy it. Sounds like it would be better than buying on for myself for Christmas when I can get a even better one in a few months.
