Rogers/Fido iPhone 3GS: Offically Launched Online

Man oh man, it’s been quite a couple of days eh? On Monday’s WWDC 2009, Apple announced updates to their MacBook line up, Snow Leopard, and introduced the iPhone 3GS.

Well, yesterday Rogers finally announced the iPhone 3GS on its website, and Fido as well! We all thought Fido would not be selling the latest iPhone as it has become a “low cost carrier”. I guess that has changed because if people desire the latest iPhone, they will pay anything to get it (the 6GB/$30 data plan is back too)!

Rogers/Fido Websites Updated with iPhone 3GS Pricing

Regardless, Rogers was a day late in announcing any official news about carrying the iPhone. We only could read tweets by their official Rogers spokesman, Keith McArthur. You gotta feel for the guy as he’s been bombarded by hundreds of tweets, yet all he can respond is with the vague company line.

Upon hearing about the iPhone 3GS being announced and seeing that Rogers logo on the WWDC presentation screen, Canadians started to wonder: How am I going to get the iPhone 3GS if I’m already on a 3 year Rogers/Fido contract?

If you are on a contract, you will not be eligible for a Hardware Upgrade (HUP) until you are at least one year into a contract–or is it 24 months? Rogers’ policy on early HUPs has been to inform people that the iPhone 3GS will be available for a non-contract price. How much? They won’t say until we are closer to the June 19th launch date.

We will be writing a definitive Rogers/Fido iPhone 3GS upgrade policy guide coming soon–watch for it! Are you going to upgrade to the iPhone 3GS? If you’re in a contract, how many months in are you?

The online check means you are eligible for a regular phone as of July 19, 2009…not a smartphone(which the iphone 3gs is considered). It’s a 2 year wait for a smartphone upgrade. So your not eligible for a new Iphone till July 19, 2010

  • TATTOOGURU

Well, after spending 15 minutes on the phone with a Rogers CSR it appears they are enforcing the 24 month upgrade policy for their smart phones.
I have to wait an additional year before getting the new iPhone.
Rogers gets over $300/month from me, thats $3,600 per year! – And I can’t get a new friggin phone!!! – Thats complete bullshit!!!!!!!!!
Guess ill be looking for one I can buy out-right!!!!

@TATTOOGURU I totally agree with you! Why is it so complicated! We are willing to pay and/or renew our contract to upgrade and we can’t!!! That’s absurd.

    Sigh…… That’s Robbers for you :-( .

I can’t believe all the potential revenue that they could be making… And would lose by not letting us upgrade.. Especially with them reporting a HUGE 4th quarter loss (2008). And only new activation customers are going to be getting one.

I’m in the same boat as most people here…got my 3G at launch July 11 last year and now I’m not eligible for HUP until July 11, 2010. Would I like the 3G(S)? ofcourse…am I that bothered that I can’t upgrade to it right now unless I pay $500-$600? Not really…it’s not that much of an improvement on the 3G. I’m patient and with all the new features of 3.0 I can wait till next summer when I’m sure there will be a much bigger difference. Altered thinner design to the phone, OLED screen, even better battery life…maybe some flash for once?! etc..

Has anyone actually checked their Rogers online account to confirm their HUP eligibility date? I checked mine and it’s claiming July 24, 2009. I purchased the iPhone 3G 8Gb last year. So, either mine is an error o rmaybe the new HUP policy isn’t retroactive. I don’t know, but I’m certainly going to try for the 3GS next month.

I don’t understand, where did you get those screenshots? I’ve checked Rogers yesterday and I’m checking it out right now, and they have absolutely nothing about the 3G S model.

Following Keith McArthur’s twitter, it looks like smartphone HUP eligibility for Rogers is 24 months, and for Fido it’s even worse – 6 months before the end of your contract, I.E. 30 MONTHS!

I think they’ll have to come up with an official policy on this. Existing iPhone 3G customers bring in a lot of revenue for the companies, and issues like these are the exact focus of what the new CEO said his mission was.

We’ll have to wait and see what the non-contract price will be, but I’m betting it won’t be pretty.

    so let me try to figure this out here;

Rogers is telling the consumer that a hardware upgrade is only available after 2 years is served on a product that is only covered by a 1 year warranty.
    1. internet petition again anyone.
    2. if we stomp the living fuck out of our current phone the last day of the 1 year warranty coveraget, can we then be presented with a choice of a 3gs replacement.

good friggin god greed by corporate identities is not something we need more of right now considering the economy.

Even though i dislike both Fido and Rogers, i am planning on getting an iPhone. Who should i go with? Fido or Rogers…. my present cell phone is with Fido, and i know i can switch my number to Roger’s system. Is Rogers service better/same/worse than Fido’s?

can one get an iPhone without the data plan? It sounds like you have to have a data paln along with a 3yr voice contract.

What will be Rogers Pricing for the new iPhone models?
Device Pricing as of June 19
(With 3yr Voice and Data Plan)

No you dont need a data plan.

As long as your voice plan is $30.01 or higher, you pay $199/$299 for the iPhone 3G “S” depending on size.

If your voice plan is $30 or less, add $50 to the price.

I was wondering the same thing. I don’t see anything about it on the site

WAIT: Good thing I checked before posting. Seemingly the only way to get to it is to click the 3rd box on the banner on the front page. Or just wait for it. Theres no links in wireless and i didn’t wait before

I’m on a 3yr contract spending around $75-$80 a month on my plan, and I’m also using a plain LG Shine phone. Hoping they take pity on my non-smartphone-ness and let me upgrade to the 3GS without obliterating my bank account. Anyone in a similar situation?

It dfepends how far into your 3-year contract you are. First year, you can’t upgrade. Second year, you can upgrade only from a non-smartphone. Third year you can upgrade with Rogers but Fido requires you be in your last 6 months.

Does anyone know the iPhone 3G S pricing for corporate plans?
    I’m on a $20 corporate plan since Sept 2007,
so basically I’m 22 months into my contract (almost 2 years).
I’m wondering if I could get a 3G S Hardware Upgrade this Friday?

Because last year, they gave bullshit non-contract prices for corporate plans (i think it was around $599 for 16GB), so I started a new plan with the 16GB for $299 and gave my existing phone and plan to my sister.

    :( I hate Rogers.
