Turns out there is more than Telus and Bell bringing new GSM networks to Canada:

http://gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/cou_ca.shtml

Bell & Telus will only be supporting 3G and 4G GSM. Other than increased revenue from international roaming, they needed to go in this direction because Verizon is. From what I understand Verizon footed the bill for converting phones to support Qualcomm CDMA, so coupled with that and a six month delay to market the this imposes, they needed to transition.

What will be interesting is what the Verizon transition will mean for the remaining Qualcomm CDMA based networks in the USA and elsewhere in the world.

GSM supports W-CDMA as a wave encoding, but not the CDMA that is associated with Qualcomm.

Telus is the strongest communication transporter company ever: they CARE about their customer, even if you spend less than 50$ /month. Because you are a customer and most consumers will die with a cell phone in their pocket. So they consider that a person will live a lifetime with a cell phone this is why Telus is the biggest profit maker of all communication transporter in Canada for the 4th year in a row. They called me to tell me happy birthday (reminder for unlimited local calls on your birthday) before my own mother!

TELUS is not lauching a GSM network. They are launching an HSPA network. Rogers current contract for exclusivity for the iPhone is based on them being the only ones to support the phone.
