Hi Everyone. This is Mary with Rogers. Sorry for the delay in response, I had mistakenly posted to a different thread.
So just to clarify, Rogers/Fido customers can already make calls over wifi using the Skype app that is available in Canada. We can't comment on Skype over a wireless network as the app available in Canada does not currently enable. But Rogers/Fido customers can use other VOIP applications that operate over the network today.

You're calling out through WiFi right? That is allowed. But calls over 3G
won't work unless your iPhone is jailbroken.

anyone know when telus/bell/rogers/fido will officially release the iphone and the plans?
my 3 yr contract just expired with rogers and want an iphone now… but im lookin for the best possible deal!

any ideas or suggestions? thx in advance!

canada and north america are so behind in technology it is not even funny. in the uk over the telecommunications carrier “3″ they allow skype calls without the use of a data plan. they let you call people through skype through your 3g network for “free” you dont need to set up a voice plan or data plan. all you need is there sim card and a compatible phone. it is amazing and this is all advertised on the skype website. check it out http://www.skype.com/intl/en-gb/welcomeback/

Apparently this is not a Rogers issue, but a Skype issue.
Rogers has said publicly that they do not block applications, including VOIP.

Yes, in the end of course Rogers will allow Skype over 3G. The pattern is always the same; 'modern' (read: European) wireless countries implement something, a year (or more!) later the US get on the train, then another year or so later safe old Canada finally bites the bullet. North American institutions are fundamentally more conservative than those in Europe.

In the meantime there's no big deal IMO - just JB + 3G Unrestrictor. Those who don't jailbreak stay that way for one of only two reasons:

- they haven't even heard of jailbreaking.
- they have heard of it but Googling throws up lots of scary (usually old) articles and they're warned off.

Those of us who have played around with this know that these days jailbreaking is trivial - it's up to us to educate our scared friends and bring them to the party!

The US version that allows calls over 3G is not out yet. It will work
on both stock and JB'n iPhones

So I'm curious, is the US version of Skype from iTunes US different than the Canadian version of Skype from iTunes Canada? Is this/will this only work on jailbroken phones or will VoIP work on locked iPhones as well? Thanks.
