Yes it sucks. I found a way to over come it and I tried to post it in Apple discussion site. Guess what? Apple remove my post. Here's the email I received from them. Below is the solution to your problem.

Your post was removed from Apple Discussions as it contained feedback or feature requests. These areas are intended to address technical issues about Apple products. Although your feedback is appreciated, unfortunately these forums are not designed for it and your thoughts/concerns will not get the attention they deserve.

If you would like to send feedback to Apple about a product, please use the appropriate selection at http://www.apple.com/feedback/
As part of submitting feedback, please read the Unsolicited Idea Submission Policy linked to the feedback page.

Sometimes you have comments or concerns for which there is no technical response. If you need the kind of help that a troubleshooting expert can't provide, you can call Apple's Customer Relations group.

I think Apple is becoming more and more annoying like Microsoft. So many restrictions on so many things. When will Steve Jobs learn to make things more normal?

I am running on Macbook 13" Aluminium, 10.6.1 with all updates, iPhone 3.1.2. I was able to do tethering thru bluetooth on 3.0. But after upgrading to 3.1.2 I can't pair my iPhone to Mac anymore. The cable method still works.

Anyway I able to solve the problem in a very doggy fashion. Here's how.

1. Click the bluetooth icon on the menu bar, select set up bluetooth devices.
2. It will search iPhone, click continue, attempting to pair with iPhone blar blar blar, don't click pair on iPhone, just let it time out.
3. On mac, it will prompt you an error saying blar blar blar in red text. Don't bother that. Click the passcode options select do not use a passcode with this device.
4. remember to clear the iPhone error message before continue on mac.
5. Ok. you should now be able to "pair" mac with iPhone. go under tethering in iPhone, turn it on.
6. now go to the bluetooth icon in menu bar again. Select iPhone -> Connect to network. It will pop up a menu saying some passcode thingy. Click Yes! and it works!, for now, until another firmware upgrade...

Anyway I still can't get it to work on my old Mac running 10.5.8. Argh... I hate cables.

I can tether fine. I'm on Rogers, iPhone 3gs 32gb 3.1.2 jailbroken with blackra!n. I am on the 2 GB plan. According to the Rogers website you need to have more than a 500mb plan in order tether so I think that could be the problem. The recent 3.1.2 probably locked tethering for 500mb and lesser data plans?
