iPhone 3G on Rogers/Fido = Missed Calls on 3G Network

by Gary on November 22nd, 2008

For the past week or so, I’ve experienced a very strange phenomenon with my iPhone 3G on Rogers. A couple nights ago I received the “new voicemail” indicator sound/buzz and it took me by surprise. Why? Well, because I didn’t hear nor receive an incoming call prior! At first I thought I was crazy. But after doing some research online and asking around on Twitter, turns out I’m not the only one with this problem.

There seems to be an inherent problem with the Rogers 3G network for iPhone 3G at the moment. The problem lies directly with 3G, and not EDGE. So that means with EDGE turned on, the problem is fixed. It’s the iPhone 3G–why would we want to use EDGE? Here are the findings so far regarding this reoccurring issue:

- This problem is happening across the country, not just in BC and the Lower Mainland. It’s been occuring for almost two months now.
- Users have also experienced garbled call quality.
- Some people have swapped SIM cards to try fixing this problem.
- Some people have gone straight to Apple and gotten replacement iPhone 3Gs (and even through Rogers/Fido).
- Some people have gotten $5 monthly credits from Rogers and told to use EDGE to solve this.
- Another solution is to go to Settings/General/Reset/Reset Network, as told by a Rogers CSR.
- Fetch mail seems to be affected by this as well (I’ve noticed my mail hasn’t been fetching periodically).

Rogers 3G Network Overwhelmed?

It appears that the problem lies directly with the 3G network and one could infer that it’s severely overwhelmed at the moment. What would be the explanation for people missing calls and having them go directly to voicemail?

Moreover, Rogers iPhone technicians are aware of this problem, yet employees at stores continue to sell the iPhone 3G. Maybe it has to do with the sudden influx of 3G users across the country? Either way, the network seems to be reaching its breaking point because I’ve also gotten “call failed” errors and inconsistent 3G surfing speeds. Rogers, please investigate this problem and fix it immediately. If you can’t offer full 3G support as advertised, don’t charge people for it!

Have you been experiencing any problems with the 3G network, either voice or data related? For those with this problem on 2.1, did updating to 2.2 firmware solve this problem?

thanks for referencing my site on here…

but our users are getting all data fees back

  2. Ryan says:

Yup, add me to the list as well. Ever since I got my phone in July ’08 with FIDO, and yes it is beyond frustrating. I am in Victoria, BC.

  3. Arisa says:

I have a 2G iphone and this happens to me all the time as well!

  4. ZC says:

I let them know after I had just missed an IMPORTANT call (my girlfriend was calling me to pick her up from the bus station, from a payphone).

The tech said “I don’t know what’s the problem, I can’t do a lot to fix it if you don’t have a houseline so you can free up your iphone for me to test out.” I was incredibly angry at him stating that I use a cell phone as my only phone, and it was totally unfair that I get low grade service.

He said to call back the next time I can document it happens, from a landline.

  5. Al says:

If our Canadian 3G network can’t support the iPhone, surely the media should be made aware of this.

What’s the point in paying for a 3G iphone and the data fees when, most of the time, it can’t do the one simple thing a phone should do…. make and receive calls?????

  6. Luis says:

Everybody having this problem please file a complaint with the CCTS and the BBB:

    http://www.ccts-cprst.ca/en/page/ComplaintsProcess
    http://www.ccbbb.ca/complain.cfm

In your complaint to the BBB, ask for a refund of your data package fees until the issue is resolved.

  7. Clay says:

Heh, now I don’t know whether it’s good or bad that we don’t even have 3G service in our area. I’m on Vancouver Island, and it looks like the only places near me that have it are Victoria and Vancouver, which I more than occasionally find myself in. Only recently got our iPhones, and so far Edge and wi-fi has been ok for us. Would be nice to have 3G obviously, but even nicer if it worked properly, heh.

  8. Brian says:

I have called Rogers 3 times about this. 2 times before reading this post and realizing there were others out there. Rogers has asked me to reset my network settings and the last time I called they wanted me to shut my phone off for a minute and they were going to send a message to it. I havent had any missed calls in the last 24 hours.

I am getting pretty frustrated with this whole situation.

  9. Itsik says:

Had the same prob, called Rogers, they said to switch 3G off for now, I asked if they will let us know when the problem is fixed, they say no, we got to check it oursleves, i asked if they will place a note on their website at least, they say no….what a horrible company, im telling you, we Canadians, are doomed with this monopoly BS horrible customer service – and by the way, to get a small refund, just speak to customer service, not tech support, and you tell them that you already did all the tests and its simply not working and they told you to contact customer service, they are the only one who can issue a refund…..

  10. Tommy says:

It happens to me too, rogers gave me a 50$ discount for this month, i told them i will cancel my service if it is not fixed by the beginning of december.

  11. Tristan Peloquin says:

    Hi,
I’m a Montreal reporter, working at La Presse. I’m in contact with a customer who compains about the same problem, but I need more witness to build my story.

Please reply at tristan.peloquin (at) lapresse (dot) ca

    Thanks

  12. Ian Conrad says:

CAlled Rogers again yesterday, they told me they were doing upgrades to 3G in my area (Nova Scotia) and it was completed Nov 27. Switched back to 3g and low and behold someone calls and said she tried calling and just didn’t get through at all. The rogers tech did tell me to upgrade to iphone v2.2 and i didn’t get a chance to yet, so i’ll try that tonight but i’m skeptical. I wouldn’t be nearly as unhappy if they were just honest about it, their story did not match what’s been occurring.

Anyway i specifically asked for compensation and i got half my voice and data taken off, for a total of $28.50

  13. Tommy says:

I switched back to 3G (from using edge for past 3 weeks), and it’s been working well, i’m in ontario. I used to get at least 80% missed calls per day, now all calls come through (also note I did not need to turn off the phone and turn it back on everynight as the support people kept saying).

  14. Archana says:

OMG ! I had the same problem and I also get tonnes of dropped calls… is it my fone or is it the network? Can I contact Rogers to have them replace my fone, if so??

  15. Ian Conrad says:

Side note: I had to call Apple support because one of my headphone speakers blew, talked to a nice helpful dude and i asked if he knew about the issues in Canada, i said i didn’t know if it was iphone-specific or not but there was a lot of talk on the online forums. He said no and was rather surprised and said he’d pass the word along so i hope he does. He seemed to understand what i meant though, about people talking on forums and such, as opposed to Rogers support. Fingers crossed, not trying to be a jerk but we’re all annoyed at this…i’m on 3g now but it’s hard to be completely confident i’m getting 100% of my calls…

  16. Generalinq says:

3g speeds have come to a crawl in the last month or so. It’s terrible.

  17. Andre says:

It’s been working well in the past few weeks. I had to restart my iPhone several times a day but not anymore. I keep calling my iPhone from a land line to make sure it’s working and I’ve had no problems in the last few weeks. Maybe Rogers fixed their 3G network?

  18. Teah says:

I don’t think the problem is fixed. I’m in Winnipeg and in the past 3 days, 3G is excruciatingly slow…that’s if it’s up. And even around midnight or so, which I would think are “low-usage” hours.

  19. HL says:

Seemed like the problem has been solved this past week. I am on Fido in Vancouver. Sweet. I spoke to a fido rep for about 30 minutes and gave me $5 dollars off for 3 years on my data because of this problem. Plus another 35 dollar credit. I was patient with this guy, explained my situation very diplomatically. I had this phone problem for 2 months, glad its all said and done now. PHEW!

I suggest all of you guys to call in and ask for some reinbusment!

  20. Gareth says:

In Winnipeg, still getting 3G problems on Fido

  21. Teah says:

3G miraculously went back up on Dec 13PM, all day Dec 14, and most of Dec 15. Since then – very, very sporadic.

  23. Brian Millar says:

Hi. Im living in Barrie Ontario Just north of toronto. I too have to resort to turning off 3G.. I had lots of dropped calls, missed calls etc with my phone. Fido just gives me the line. Try reseting. try restoring. Bla bla bla. Fix the F!##ing problem already.
I and paying 115.00/month for this.. I want in the class action lawsuit if there is one.
    Please keep me posted.

  24. nwallar says:

WELL….I can relate to you all.

I’ve replaced my iphone, reinstalled, rebooted, airplane moded etc etc

works for a while then right back to the BS.

To let you all know…If you surf on EDGE you will NOT receive calls. if you have data transferring over EDGE it will block all voice incoming. You can confirm this by easy searches on google.

Leading to another problem. 3G doesn’t work because all calls are blocked. EDGE blocks calls if you use it…THEREFORE why am I paying 30 F**CKING dollars a month for NOTHING?

    thoughts?

  25. iphoneinvestigation says:

    Mr. Millar,

Please contact me at iphoneinvestigation@hotmail.com regarding your iPhone experiences.

Please include the details outlined in my previous post above.

    thank you.

  26. Al says:

I have the same probleme even here in New Jersey. I have to turn off 3G whenerver I want to receive calls. I tried reset, turning the phone on and off, respring, etc.. Notghing worked. It’s frustrating. If any one has found a solution to this problem, please let me know.

  27. Gary says:

I have not been experiencing this problem but my father in law has – he pretty much has everything running. 3G, location services etc. This might be a stupid suggestion but has anyone tried turning off location services – I know this can be quite heavy on both data and battery??

  28. _Shorty says:

What for? It’s not running or causing any additional battery load while you’re phone’s sitting there locked and doing nothing. And it does not produce any data load whatsoever, unless you’re using an app that actually downloads map data. Receiving signals from GPS satellites requires no data traffic.

  29. Mark says:

People, just to keep you all in the loop, I’m in London, England and I have the same issue here with my provider o2. Any assistance is welcome.

    Mark

  30. Freddie Cu says:

I have problem with my Iphone 3G about night of Apri 10, 2009 wherein I started having “No Service”. I called Fido the following day and they told me to do hard reset on my Iphone. I did but still doing that. Then they told me if i have another GSM phone that i can put my SIM Card to test it and I did and no signal. I called back again to report this. They did tell me to dial something like some number with lots of # and it got this numbers registering, must the place of their tower i suspect in my area. The whole day of April 11th i just stayed at home and could not get any incoming texts, calls, outside calls etc. Nothing at all except for my home wifi router access. April 12th I went out with my kids and have appointment. Check if i could make a call from our area. Nothing and the same prob. Then there’s some area beyond that i can start make a call. Double checked again many times going certain area in out place sometimes with signal with 3G appearing but could not make a call. “Called Failed” says. But then I went out on another area far from out place and it did get good signal and i called 611 and complained same thing. I could not believed talking to this “Charles” for 40 min talking same all over again and said it must be me only having this prob. Well I said you’re the 3rd person I talked to and you still dont know the prob? And yet they are not logging my exact complain as only the first tech person that logged my complaint. Now I visited this site and really Fido’s service is so poor. Try CRTC site plan of complaining but got this:

    http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/iphone-rogers/iphone-3g-on-rogersfido-missed-calls-on-3g-network/

So get to this site to see if u can complain. I had bad prob with them before, with my fax number assigned to another customer of them without informing me. Bad thing I am on contract with them. But surely next will try getting from their service.

  31. Julia says:

I have the same problem. I recently purchased an Iphone 3g and I keep getting texts saying I have voicemail, but no call. Just tonight, my phone was in front of me and I got no calls, but three voicemails. I tried turning airplane mode on/off, and turned off 3g. Let’s see what happens.

  32. Genuine_luva says:

I BEEN EXPERIENCE PROBLEM WITH THE EDGE NETWORK FROM ROGERS WHERE I CHANGE NUMBEROUS PHONES AND SIMCARD AND STILL GET CALL FAIL.
